October 17, 2025

YCIS-SV CommunityConnectionOctober 17, 2025

Dear YCIS-SV Community,

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Founders’ Day evening celebration as we marked 93 years of Yew Chung’s legacy! It was wonderful to see our families, students, and staff come together to celebrate this important milestone in YCIS history.

Last Friday, our Founders’ Day Sports events on the K–8 campus were filled with enthusiasm and team spirit. At YCIS, we believe that education goes beyond academics—developing a strong body, good character, and resilient spirit is at the heart of our whole-child approach.

You are also welcome to watch the playback from YCYW https://live.polyv.cn/watch/6448777 .

We were also honored to welcome Mr. Scott (YCIS Superintendent) and Ms. Weir (YCYW ECE Director), who spent valuable time connecting with our students and staff. They offered thoughtful insights and feedback to help guide our school’s continued growth and improvement. Their visit concluded with heartfelt goodbyes—and a warm “see you next time!”—to our YCIS-SV community.

Yesterday (10/16/25), our students participated in California’s Great ShakeOut Day, joining millions across the state in practicing earthquake preparedness. This meaningful activity helped reinforce safety awareness and reminded students that staying calm and ready is an important part of building strong character and responsibility.

Thank you once again for your continued support and partnership in helping our students grow in mind, body, and spirit.

Regards,

Kevin and Vivian

Happy Founder’s Day (ECE Campus)

We marked the 93rd anniversary of the YCYW Foundation on the ECE Campus with a fun, hands-on celebration right on the playground! A large cake drawn on paper and trays full of open-ended materials drew the children right away when they headed outside to play. They used magic nuudles, streamers, straws, tape, and more to fill the cake. Happy Birthday, YCIS!

YCIS House System (TK Edition)

A buzz of excitement filled the air as our TK students in the Jellyfish and Seahorse Classes eagerly awaited their placement into one of the six fantastic YCIS House teams for the year! Would they be joining the Dragon, Lion, Tiger, Phoenix, Tortoise, or Panda House? During their weekly assembly, each student received their new House shirt and were ready to wear their colors with pride. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to all of the House activities to come!

3rd Grade Field Trip: Exploring the Ohlone Habitat

Last week, our 3rd graders embarked on an exciting field trip to Rancho San Antonio County Park to explore a replica of an Ohlone Village and study the Ohlone habitat. This hands-on learning experience helped students connect directly with our social studies unit on the Indigenous peoples of California, focusing on the Ohlone people who once lived in this region.

Through a variety of interactive learning stations, students discovered how the Ohlone skillfully adapted to their natural environment. They explored how the tribe used creativity and resourcefulness to design tools, build shelters, and find food—showing remarkable ingenuity in overcoming nature’s challenges.

Students especially enjoyed seeing how community cooperation and problem-solving played an essential role in the Ohlone’s daily life, helping them lay the foundation for one of the earliest forms of civilization in our region.

The field trip was both fun and inspiring, giving our young historians a deeper appreciation for California’s first inhabitants and the importance of respecting and preserving their legacy.

Celebrating Founder’s Day – A YCIS Silicon Valley Tradition

As a proud YCYW family, we celebrated Founder’s Day, one of the most cherished traditions at YCIS Silicon Valley! This special day is filled with fun, teamwork, and community spirit—truly reflecting the heart of our school.

This year’s event was especially meaningful thanks to the incredible leadership of our ASB (Associated Student Body) students. Our middle school leaders stood out as role models, taking charge of planning and organizing the entire celebration. They designed each activity station, coordinated hosts, and worked closely with teachers to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Before the big day, one ASB representative presented the event plan at staff meeting, while another student confidently introduced the rules and station activities to the entire school at the start of the event—demonstrating outstanding communication and leadership skills.

We are incredibly proud of our ASB students for showcasing creativity, collaboration, teamwork, confidence, and problem-solving throughout the event. Founder’s Day was a joyful reminder of what makes our YCYW community so special—students and teachers coming together to learn, lead, and celebrate!

Middle School

On October 10th, the Middle School had their very first social of the school year, Trivia Night, organized by Ms. Chen and Mr. Lee. Students, their families, and YCIS teachers and staff came together for an evening that blended fun, learning, and connection.

Teams put their minds to the test with questions spanning pop culture, science, history, geography, and math. The friendly competition brought plenty of smiles and cheers as families enjoyed working together and sharing moments of teamwork.

Most importantly, the night was about building community with our families. Conversations flowed, snacks were shared, and the room was filled with excitement.

A big shout out to our Trivia Night champion, Erica! Congratulations and the well earned win! Thank you everyone who joined us and helped make the evening such a success. We look forward to many more joyful moments together as a YCIS community.

Yew Chung Art & Language Program (YALP) Yew Chung Art & Language Program (YALP)

YALP Takes Learning Into Nature!

The vibrant leaves are the most beautiful scenery of autumn, and our Kindergarten and first grade students have been fully immersed in their study of leaves!

They explored the different parts of a leaf and their growth environments. Taking their classroom learning outside, observed, searched for, and identified leaves in nature, and recorded their findings in observation journals.

Picture1: Students learned about leaf structure, venation, pigments, and shapes, using scientific terminology to describe their findings.

Picture2: Students searched the field for various kinds of leaves based on their task sheet.

Picture3: Students proudly displayed and compared the leaves they brought back.

Picture4: Hailey created a leaf hat for her friend using her most beautiful finds.

Picture5: Yukee and Ray collaborated on a leaf rubbing print (拓印画).

Picture6: Braydon and his friends experimented by soaking leaves in dish detergent, watching them glide across the water like speedboats

Picture7: Ailin and Paul led kinder students in a science experiment using alcohol to extract the pigments from the leaves.
