Marine Science Kayaking Field Trips
Many thanks to Mr. Sandle and Mr. Mattson for their time and hard work organizing the Marine Science field trips this year. If you were not aware, our Marine Science students had a "classroom on the water" experience this year, going out to the Indian River Lagoon to take water samples and extend some traditional classroom lessons. We had several staff members serve as chaperones, and also our District 4 Cocoa Council member Lorraine Koss. In fact, I received a very kind email from Councilwoman Koss after her field trip experience:
Principal Stewart,
Today may have been the most fun I have had since joining City Council! Thanks to you, Mr. Mattson, and Mr. Sandle for inviting me to go along on the kayaking trip with the students. Seeing this program in action fulfills one of my dreams - to expose more youth to the riches of the Indian River Lagoon. It was great to see them interact, learn, and appreciate this natural resource at our door step. I will be talking about this at the next Council meeting in my report.
For many of our students who attended, this was the first time they had ever kayaked, and for some it was the first time they had ever been to the IRL at all. What a truly memorable experience!
Comprehensive Needs Assessment Team -- Summer Work
Schools receiving Title 1 funds are required to complete a yearly Comprehensive Needs Assessment. This year we will be meeting on Wednesday, May 29, 30 and 31st. (District 4-day weeks don't start until June if you were wondering about Friday, May 31st).
The goal of the 3 days is to conduct a deep dive into school data (survey results, test scores, grades, attendance, discipline to name a few). We will review, analyze and identify areas in need of improvement as well as create proposals for such improvements. This is the preparation for the School Improvement Plan for SY2025.
If you are new to Cocoa High School and would like to be more involved, this is a great opportunity.
Below is a link for the Goggle form for you to complete.

Please don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Celesti if you have any questions.
The deadline for responding is Friday, May 3, 2024.

PINT SIZED PD
Pint Sized PD: 28 Ways to Quickly Check for Understanding
Formative assessments --- those quick "temperature checks" for understanding, are a vital tool in a teacher's toolkit. It is very easy to mistakenly believe that every student is keeping up with you or understands your lesson if you only rely on the brave few who like to shout out answers or raise their hands. Having a formal way to check to see which students are truly understanding your lesson will keep both the students and the teacher on track.
With review season here, it's even more important that you aren't assuming that everyone knows and understands, or even remembers, something that was taught at the beginning of the year or semester. Plan ahead for both your review activities and how you will check for understanding during your review, reteach, or remediate lessons.

Adopt a Senior List
We are looking to connect those seniors who need extra encouragement to make it to graduation with a caring staff member who can act as a mentor to them. Please use the link to find the list of seniors and enter your name in the column that says "Menor Name". DO NOT shuffle or otherwise edit the document, other than to add your name next to a senior's name.
Suggestions for mentoring: Make a weekly plan to meet to check in on your senior - remember to come from a positive place of wanting to see your senior be successful; help your senior set mini-goals and reward them with Tiger PRIDE tickets or some other small incentive; talk about post-high school plans with your senior, and offer resource suggestions if they aren't sure (like referring to Mrs. Molina); attend a sporting event or performance that the student might be involved in; offer tutoring if they are struggling in a subject area you are able to assist, or refer them to tutoring (see schedule below). Mostly just get to know your senior and let them know you are committed to helping them see the finish line and can't wait to celebrate with them!

Testing Calendar Link
From Mr. Dailey:
We wanted to get you the most updated testing calendar. The link in my signature has the updated schedule of testing for AICE, AP, SAT, ACT and EOCs.
Use it to plan for your students, help remediate any upperclassmen for graduation requirements, or just to make sure your students know what's coming.
March, April, and May have all been updated.
