Bancroft Bulletin
Family Edition: May 29, 2026
Hello Bancroft -
We are still smiling from the incredible turnout at our K-5 Art Show and our 4th & 5th Grade Band, Strings, Orff, and Chorus Concert last night. It was wonderful to see our gym and cafeteria packed to the brim with supportive families. In fact, our audience was so massive that our amazing custodial team had to quickly wheel out extra racks of chairs to accommodate everyone! Thank you all for coming out to celebrate the hard work, creativity, and immense talent of our young artists and musicians.
đź‘• Lost & Found: Last Call!
While the talent this week was truly amazing, our Lost & Found collection is looking a bit too impressive. The racks are completely overflowing with jackets, water bottles, and sweatshirts.
🚨 Please Note: With only a few weeks left of the school year, all unclaimed items will be donated on June 18th. Please make sure to stop by the school, sift through the items, and rescue your family's missing gear before it's gone!
Have a great weekend,
Beth & Kim

Physical Education weekly update!
Week of May 26th
This week, students in all grades continued to practice the skill of kicking in a game called “Dice It Up”, where they work in teams to knock down pins in order to roll dice to obtain as many points as possible for their team. Students in grades 4-5 also began making their teams for the upcoming Track and Field meet on June 5th.
Music weekly update!
WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MUSIC CLASS 5/26/26-5/29/26
K, 1 students are combining music and dance with the beloved children’s book Giraffes Can’t Dance. We pair storytelling with the dances of the waltz, rock and roll, tango, cha-cha, and scottish reel. Students are able to express themselves with their final dance and understand they can find their own unique rhythm and embrace their differences focusing on what makes them special and unique.
In grades 2, 3, and 4 students are continuing a song called “The Name Song.” With this song, students learn how the musical alphabet of the notes A, B, C, D, E, F, and G relates to their names. Students get to choose which instrument they’d like to play (xylophone, metallophone, or glockenspiel) and understand how to properly remove the bars and then we take turns playing solos as we go around the room on our “names.”
5th grade students are busy with learning their song for the end of year celebration. We discuss stage presence focusing on singing with expression, good posture, diction (clarity), and dynamics (louds and softs)
Students are also continuing their experience with ukulele. In addition to the C and F chord, we are currently working on learning our third chord. (a minor) We look forward to playing the song “Thunder” by The Imagine Dragons as we move forward into the last few weeks of school.
**** Huge congrats to all performers in the spring concert for an outstanding performance! It was incredible to see all your hard work, confidence, and musical growth come to life on stage. ****
Attention Second Grade Families
ANDOVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS ELEMENTARY STRINGS PROGRAM - Grade 3
Hello Andover Families,
We are pleased to invite your child to join our elementary instrumental music program in Grade 3. In Andover, students may begin string instruction in Grade 3, when they have the option to play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass). This will be a regularly scheduled part of their music curriculum, and string instruments must come to school for weekly lessons. Students who do not opt into this program will receive other additional music instruction.
Strings Instruction - Things to consider:
Learning a string instrument is a wonderful way to begin an instrumental music career in school. However, there must be a commitment to home practice and instrument care. Students enrolled in the string program are expected to participate for the whole school year, be prepared for scheduled public performances, and practice regularly. Students and families are encouraged to review policies around instrument rental and care. We are here to support you. The first few lessons will focus on some real basics: unpacking/packing, bow hold, instrument position, and instrument/bow care, but through commitment and regular practice, students will be performing several short, recognizable songs by the end of the year.
We ask that you consider this with your child and make the selection by June 7th, 2026 - if possible. Families who do not wish to participate in the strings program do not need to respond to the form below:
Grade 3 Strings Registration - UPDATE
Renting an Instrument:
There are several instrument rental options for the Fall for families interested in string instruction. Below is a partial list of vendors. Families are welcome to explore other rental options. This information will be shared again later in the summer:
Johnson String Instruments of Newton, MA - http://www.johnsonstring.com
Leonards Music of Bedford, MA - http://www.leonardsmusic.com
Spencer Brook Strings of Maynard, MA - http://www.spencerbrookstrings.com
Rowen Strings of Boxford, MA - https://www.rowenstrings.com
Renting a good-quality string instrument has many benefits. Rental companies provide security in terms of repair and size upgrades as your child grows. Instrument pricing, sizing, and rental information for these companies can be found on their websites. We strongly discourage parents from buying an instrument at this time. Grade 3 students will need a smaller instrument fitted to their specific size in order to learn successfully and will need a size upgrade every year or so (free through a rental service) after that.
PLEASE NOTE: Instruments purchased online may be of poor quality. A poor quality instrument will greatly hinder your child’s progress. While buying online may seem like an attractive option, it may cause many unnecessary challenges. Through a generous donation by the Andover Coalition for Education, for beginning Grade 3 string players, we have many high quality, school-owned stringed instruments (violins, violas, cellos, and basses) available for those who qualify for financial assistance. More information will be available later in the summer.
Sincerely,
Julie Diehl, Elementary Strings Instructor - julie.diehl@andoverma.us
Art weekly update!
Kindergarteners are reading Strega Nona, by Tomie dePaola. Students drew strands of pasta. THey practiced drawing overlapping lines and parallel lines. Next, they will color their strands using colored pencils.
First graders are creating drawings of underwater scenes. We created a drawing as a class with student suggestions and then students went off to create their own detailed oceanscapes.
Second graders have been creating graphic novels. They created a story with characters, and included drawings, speech & thought bubbles and author narration.
Third graders are finishing up projects such as their Cezanne inspired fruit collages, and their three dimensional rooms inspired by Vincent Van Gogh
Fourth graders are creating maps in art class. They are looking at real and fantasy maps. Students are creating a map of their choice to draw, including a map title and key.
Fifth graders are learning about American artist, Sari Shryack. She creates colorful paintings or ordinary objects. Students looked at her painting of a disco ball, and draw their own with glue. Next, they will add colorful chalk pastels to the sections of their disco ball.
Library Media weekly update!
Week of May 25
This week marked the last week for book check outs. All library books must be returned to the library by Friday, June 5th. Currently, there are 925 books currently checked out!
This week, Kindergarten began their research unit. The research unit will focus on dragonflies. Students began working in their research book and drew a dragonfly.
First grade, second grade, and third graders continued to work on their research projects. First graders focused on labeling a sketch of a blue jay. Second graders reviewed their research and determined if their insect was helpful or harmful. Third graders continued to research the animal they selected for their Who Would Win Project.
Fourth graders began learning about popular genres in the library. This week students discussed the characteristics of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Fifth graders began working on opinion writing and how to craft an opinion piece.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What Standards are covered? How do students receive feedback?
We are guided by both the MA State Frameworks and the National Music Standards. Students will learn proper playing techniques and music literacy, such as reading notes in the appropriate clef and key signatures, basic rhythms, and playing together as an ensemble. We also focus on building one’s identity as instrumentalists and helping students perform to convey musical intention. Students will receive progress reports in the middle and at the end of the year.
2. How do I rent an instrument? What books do I need?
Information can be found here. Please click on the link.
Strings: Elementary Strings Supplies List
Band: APS Elementary Band Supply List
3. What are the expectations around commitment and practice?
Students should expect to practice multiple days a week and attend all concerts. There are at least two concerts a year. This is a full-year commitment.
4. What are the class expectations?
Students should come to school with their lesson book and instrument in good repair and ready to play. Students should come ready to work and engage appropriately in the learning environment. Our basic tenet is around respect: respect for themselves and others, respect for their instrument, and respect for their environment.
5. What happens if a student is struggling or expressing disinterest?
Communication is the key. Learning something new can be a struggle. Please reach out if your child is showing signs of struggling or is disinterested. We are happy to help guide your student through the joys and challenges of this new journey.
6. How can parents/caregivers support students in their musical journey?
Students will receive weekly practice logs and homework. We encourage you to help your child create a practice routine, a practice space, and the ability to share music with family members in person or by recording a video. If you have questions about the setup or care of the instrument, please reach out. Learning an instrument is a partnership between the student, the instructor, and the family.
7. What additional music opportunities exist?
Grades 4 and 5 Strings students (with one or more years of playing experience) are welcome to join our Primo Orchestra. This beginning string ensemble rehearses every Tuesday from 4:15 to 5:30, at West Middle School, and performs in three concerts throughout the school year.
Grade 5 Band students (with one or more years of playing experience) are welcome to join our All-Town Band. This group rehearses every Tuesday from 4:15 to 5:30 at Doherty Middle School, and performs in three concerts throughout the school year.
8. Is private instruction available?
Our APS teachers don’t teach private lessons to current or existing students. However, private instruction is a great supplement to your child’s in-school experience. If you are interested in private instruction, please reach out to your instrumental music teacher for more information about local private teachers.
TECHNOLOGY DEVICES AT SCHOOL
We are all working to manage the age of technology and are looking for support between school and home. Many children have new smart devices and the elementary schools have some guidance.
A kind reminder to our families that cell phones must be turned off and in students’ backpacks at the start of the school day. Smartwatches may be worn as regular watches, however, students are not allowed to text, communicate with others, use applications, take pictures or videos, or access social media services and websites.
Should parents/guardians urgently need to reach their child during the school day, we ask that you call the main office. Students are also allowed to come to the main office if they need to contact someone at home. If a cell phone or watch becomes a significant distraction, school administrators will reach out to parents/guardians. The Andover Public Schools is not responsible for lost, stolen, damaged, or broken devices.
To promote healthy digital habits during the school day, the resources below may be helpful to use. We appreciate your partnership as we work to keep interruptions to the school day at a minimum.

Transportation Information
MOST IMPORTANT - CARS DO NOT TRAVEL FROM THE BANCROFT ROAD SIDE OF THE SCHOOL. YOU ENTER THE CAR LANE FROM WEST KNOLL.
OUR BUSES MUST USE BANCROFT ROAD AND IT IS NOT WIDE ENOUGH FOR CARS AND BUSES. YOUR COOPERATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL!
When cars are waiting prior to 8:45 and prior to 3:30, they must be TURNED OFF.
This is a NO IDLING ZONE as the SIGNAGE INDICATES.
DROP OFF: ALL CARS MUST DRIVE UP WEST KNOLL TO DROP OFF STUDENTS. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not get out of the car in the morning to help your child. We have staff on duty to assist and this will hold up the line quite a bit. We know many have to rush off and we want to help in any way we can. This is a way we can help one another!
There is a staff member there to direct traffic and it is a single lane so you may not pass even if your child has exited your car.
PARENT PICK-UP: ALL CARS MUST DRIVE UP WEST KNOLL TO PICK UP STUDENTS. NO CARS WILL BE PERMITTED TO ENTER FROM BANCROFT ROAD.
In order to help expedite the pick-up procedure, please write your last name ONLY in LARGE, BLACK, BOLD print on a piece of tag board/paper and have it prominently displayed when you arrive to pick up your child. This will expedite the process. If someone else is picking up your child, please have them follow the same protocol.
AGAIN . . . DO NOT EXIT YOUR CAR DURING THIS TIME OR PASS CARS! Every car stays in a single line and waits for the car in front of you to drive off.
Thank you very much!
