Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Here are a few Hispanic Americans and their contributions to areas like science, government, art, literature and sports.

Celia Cruz

Cruz was a Cuban-American singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century. She became known internationally as the QUEEN OF SALSA due to her unique and trend-setting music.

Cesar Chavez

Chavez was a Mexican-American labor and civil rights leader. His determination helped him lead boycotts, protests, and movements to help Latinos obtain equal rights in the U.S.

Ellen Ochoa

She is known for being the first Hispanic woman to go to space. Not only did her intelligence and hard work help her become an astronaut; it also helped her become the director of the Johnson Space Center (2013-2018).

Sonia Sotomayor

She is a Puerto-Rican American woman who became the youngest judge in the southern district. Her fearlessness helped her become the first Puerto Rican woman to serve as a judge in the U.S. Federal Court. Currently, she is a Supreme Court justice.

Roberto Clemente

Clemente was an MVP on and off the field. He is the first Latino minor league baseball player to make 3,000 hits. He is also known for persevering through discrimination from his peers.

Reminders About Gym During Lunch

Just a few reminders about being in the gym during lunch:
  • You may NOT go out into the hall way. You are either in the PAC or the cafeteria.
  • Behavior expectations remain the same in the PAC as they are in the classroom.
  • Inappropriate language and behaviors are not allowed and will result in you being removed for the next day. This includes tackling, rough, aggressive play, throwing balls at others, kicking balls across the gym and using profanity.
  • You may NOT bring open food into the gym.
  • EVERYONE needs to help clean up when the bell rings. It is not ok to just kick the balls to the corner of the gym for someone else to clean up.
  • Nothing should be left in the gym, including water bottles, chips, trash...
  • Always be safe.
  • Remember, it is a PRIVILEGE to have the gym open during that time and if you wish to see it continue to be open, you need to be following all behavior expectations.

988 Handout

It is Suicide Prevention Month...

As you support others through their mental health challenges, it’s important to remember that your own wellbeing matters too. One effective way to take care of yourself is by practicing self-compassion. This means treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a good friend.

Here’s how to practice self-compassion:

  1. Acknowledge your feelings: When you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a moment to recognize your emotions without judgment. It’s OK to feel this way, and it’s a natural part of being human.
  2. Speak kindly to yourself: Notice your inner dialogue and replace self-critical thoughts with affirming and supportive ones. For instance, instead of thinking, “I’m not doing enough,” try, “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.”
  3. Take mindful breaks: Set aside time each day for activities that help you recharge and center yourself. Whether that means taking a short walk, deep breathing, or a few moments of quiet reflection, these breaks can help reduce stress and boost your resilience.
  4. Seek support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to others when you need help. Just as you support those around you, allow yourself the same privilege. Talking with a trusted friend, mentor or counselor can provide valuable perspective and comfort.
