STAAR Review "Boot Camp"

This is one of our annual favorites! On Wednesday, May 11, 8th grade students and teachers teamed up for an engaging final review of concepts learned this school year. In Social Studies, students completed escape-room-style puzzles to solve the mystery and solidify the relationships between historical facts and concepts. In Science, students traveled to over 60 interactive stations, guided by student leaders. By the end of this boot camp, students were ready for action.

Graphic Organizers

Students sorted historical data by eras of American history. This is a great strategy for making lasting learning connections.

Names and Dates

Everybody remembers this challenging component of History class. How do you remember all of the names and dates? This activity makes the facts meaningful by "chunking" them with other related facts. Students had great discussions to determine the best placement for each card.

Connect Four

In this competitive game-show-style activity, teams accessed their interactive notebooks to respond to questions and be the first team to "Connect Four" on the whiteboard.

Sticky Note Timeline

Students cooperate to build a timeline of events. They can revise the timeline if needed. Their discussions and debates help commit the facts and concepts to long-term memory.

Almost There!

This puzzle looks like it's almost complete. But there is only one correct solution. Will all of the pieces match?

Environmental Science

An instructional video lays the foundation. Then students use the information to make predictions about human impact on environmental systems.

Interactive Science Stations

In this student-led activity, students complete over 60 interactive stations to reinforce key scientific concepts.

Chemistry

Students explore elements and atoms, learning about their sub-atomic structure and properties. This enables students to interpret the periodic table of elements, a key tool for the study and practice of chemistry.

Measuring Our Learning

State testing can be daunting for students, teachers and parents alike. Of course, we want our students to do their very best. Moore's expectation of academic excellence has resulted in 41 out of 45 possible TEA academic distinctions since 2013.

But sometimes it helps to take a deep breath and put things in perspective. A test is an instrument designed to measure how much a student has learned. It's like an educational ruler. So, as you visit with your child about their upcoming tests, we hope you will encourage them to prepare to do their very best. But also, remind them of how much they have learned this year.

Pro Tip: Ask your child to give you a tour of their interactive notebooks from each class. As they explain the notes and activities contained on each page, it will activate their knowledge and serve as a great review for upcoming assessments. They will probably even teach you something!

Parent Chromebook Check

Dear Moore Parents,

We encourage you to check the status of your child's district-issued Chromebook on a regular basis. You can monitor it for any damage and encourage your child to take good care of the device, since it is used on a daily basis for instructional activities. STAAR testing will also be completed on Chromebooks. If your child's Chromebook is in need of repair, we want to take care of that in plenty of time to prepare for testing. Please review the Tyler ISD Technology Agreement, which renders financial responsibility for lost or damaged devices to families.

Daily Morning Tutorials

Please encourage your child to attend daily morning tutorials from 7:50-8:20 am. We encourage students to have a plan upon arrival. Our tutorials are open, meaning no invitation is required. Students should bring their Chromebook, a library book and class materials each day so that this time is productive.
