Individual Graduation Plan Information
A South Carolina Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) is a state-mandated plan, required for students in grades 8-12, that guides them toward their education and career goals. Developed annually in a meeting with the student, their parent/guardian, and a school counselor, the IGP aligns high school coursework with post-high school aspirations, which may include college or the workforce. The process starts in middle school with career exploration and culminates in students selecting a career cluster and major by the end of their 10th-grade year.
Key components of the IGP
- Annual Conference: A yearly meeting is held with the student, their parent/guardian, and a school counselor to review progress, discuss career interests, and select courses for the upcoming year.
- Career Exploration: Starting in middle school, students participate in career assessments and activities to explore interests and potential career clusters.
- Career Cluster and Major: By the end of 10th grade, students must choose a career cluster and a specific "major" or concentration of four courses within that cluster to focus their high school studies.
- Course Planning: The plan outlines the core academic and elective classes needed for graduation, ensuring that students' coursework is aligned with their future goals.
- State Requirement: The IGP is mandated by the state's Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) of 2005 and requires parent/guardian signature before high school enrollment.
How the IGP helps students
- Connects education to career: It helps students understand how their high school courses prepare them for future job opportunities or college.
- Provides structure: It gives students a structured path to follow throughout high school to meet graduation requirements and post-high school plans.
- Promotes planning: It encourages students to think about their long-term goals and make informed decisions about their education.

Naviance Career Assessment and Career Planning Tool
Students can access Naviance through Clever. Students can take inventories that will help them select future careers aligned with their skills and interests. This will help them refine their post-secondary plans and course selection.
An IGP is an Individual Graduation Plan that is developed for a specific student that correlates to their high school graduation, post-secondary plans, and future career goals. The school counselor works with the student and parent or guardian to develop this plan. Meetings are conducted annually to update the plan and discuss future classes. Questions may be addressed to the grade-level counselor. Calendly meeting links are now available to schedule the 2025-2026 IGP meeting. Please use the designated links to schedule and IGP with your child's school counselor. You may also contact school counselors to ask questions and to address concerns regarding students.
