Operation Christmas Wishes Fundraiser
Operation Christmas Wishes is up and running! There will be a few different events taking place between now through December 5th to support their efforts. Between this weekend's Holiday Fun Day (information provided above), the bake sale, hot cocoa sales, etc. all of the money raised is going to a great cause. Students will be traveling to both Perry ELC and Puentes ELC in Ypsilanti to provide gifts and a memorable day to the students there. All donations are due by December 4th. The informational flyer can be found here.
Holiday Fun Day - Operation Christmas Wishes Fundraiser
Our BHS Leadership Class is organizing a Holiday Fun Day on Sunday 11/23 1 pm - 4 pm for elementary age children (JK-4th grade)! Scan the QR code to sign them up!
Apprenticeship/Skilled Trades Wall
We are so excited to share that our new Apprenticeship/Skilled Trades Wall is up, and is located in the Main Hall next to Mrs. Starrak's room (A-10).
The Apprenticeship Wall is a spot where students can scan QR codes to find quick, up-to-date information about trade careers and apprenticeship opportunities—like construction, electrical, HVAC, welding, plumbing, and more. It lists current openings, training programs, requirements, and contacts.
It's a great resource for students. Please check it out!
Special thanks to Dr. Clark for all of her work in bringing this valuable resource to BHS!
I-96 at Grand River Avenue - Project Update
Please see the information below regarding Grand River construction/closures from the project's engineering manager as it may impact your commute:
The last significant traffic shift of the season will take place along Grand River Avenue on Monday, November 24th from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The following closures will be in place during this time:
- Eastbound Grand River Avenue will be completely closed between Hilton Road and the Eastbound I-96 off-ramp. Traffic will be detoured along Hilton Road and Old US-23, exactly as it was during the full closure of Grand River Avenue this past summer.
- The Westbound I-96 off-ramp to Grand River Avenue will be closed. Traffic will be directed to use the Spencer Road Exit to Old US-23 to Grand River Avenue.
- Westbound Grand River Avenue will remain open but will be reduced to one lane through the work zone.
At the completion of this work, we will be in our winter configuration with two lanes of traffic in each direction on Grand River Avenue and all ramps open. This includes the new Westbound I-96 on-ramp which will be accessible from both Eastbound and Westbound Grand River Avenue.
PSAT 11/NMSQT Results and Upcoming Standardized Test Prep
In case you didn't know, the PSAT 11/NMSQT results for our students from the October test are now available in their College Board accounts. Keep in mind these test results are not only a baseline for expected spring scores (all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students will be taking the PSAT/SAT in April), but also unlock a number of targeted preparation options for our students. Through College Board's partnership with Khan Academy, linked PSAT results with share options for growth with our students as they look to maximize their scores this spring.
In addition to these online resources, as the year goes on, our students will be exposed to additional standardized test prep in their classes. This will include increased exposure to content covered on upcoming standardized tests, the types of questions on these tests, as well as test taking strategies. This has been taking place, and will continue to take place in students' classes, including their Advisory period at various points in time up until April.
Follow Up Plan on SAT/PSAT Testing During Advisory
Thank you for you help with Wednesday's practice SAT and PSAT assessments that our 9th through 11th graders took during Advisory. We appreciate you encouraging your students to put forth their best effort. On the whole, students did an excellent job taking their time and doing their best on these practice assessments. We have had students ask about if they will get their results/next steps. This information is provided below:
- We will be scanning the bubble sheets next week so that we can begin providing results to students and analyzing the results.
- Students will be provided with their "Student Small Slip" generated by Illuminate so they are aware of the outcome of their practice assessment.
- Students will be provided with a digital copy of the assessment. The copy will include the questions, answers, and rationales for the answers.
- We'll share the breakdown of the questions when that information is available.
- We plan to provide a similar opportunity to students again later this winter, prior to the actual tests in April.

United States Naval Academy Q & A Session - November 25th
Any student interested in the United States Naval Academy should sign up in the Counseling Office for a 6th hour Q & A session from Midshipman Danny Borozan, a Sophomore at the US Naval Academy. Danny is in town over Thanksgiving Break, and would love to present materials to any student considering the Naval Academy. He will discuss his experience with admissions, and discuss up and coming summer opportunities like Summer Seminar and the Summer STEM Program. This is a last minute opportunity on Tuesday, November 25th during the 6th hour. If you are interested, please sign up in the Counseling Office and see Mrs. Petit if you have any questions.
BHS Hockey Toys for Tots Toy Drive - November 26th
The Brighton High School hockey team is partnering with Brighton Ford as part of a Toys for Tots Toy Drive at one of their upcoming games. They will be collecting new, unopened toys at their upcoming home game on Wednesday, November 26th. Puck drops at 7 pm at the Bigby Coffee Ice Cube (formerly Kensington Valley Ice House).
Upcoming 2nd Quarter Progress Reports - Visible December 8th
I know it seems like the 1st Quarter just ended, but it is almost time for 2nd Quarter Progress Reports. These progress reports are visible on Monday, December 8th in both ParentConnect and StudentConnect. This is a pretty quick turnaround once we get back from Thanksgiving Break. Please encourage your students who may need to play catch up to do so before break so they can take a few days off. Otherwise, the break is a great opportunity for them to get back on track without new work being assigned!
Make Up Testing and Make Up Attendance Opportunity
In an effort to have all of our students caught up coming out of Thanksgiving Break, we will be offering make up testing for all students on Monday, December 1st from 8 am to 3 pm. Any students looking to test should plan to arrive by 2 pm (1:30 pm if they have extended time) to ensure they have enough time to finish. Students should coordinate any make up testing opportunities with their teachers directly in advance on December 1st to ensure that their test(s) will be available.
If a student needs to make up attendance per the attendance policy in order to earn credit, they also have the ability to make up time on December 1st between 8 am and 3 pm. They can make up as much or as little time as they would like on this day to get them down to the allowable nine absences for the semester.
Upcoming ASVAB Test Opportunity
Brighton High School Counseling is offering the ASVAB test for 10th -12th grade students interested in further career exploration. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program promotes career literacy through personalized career exploration, awareness of career-field entry requirements, and future-oriented planning tools that help students develop an action plan that they can share with parents and educators. Students will learn about themselves, whether they're interested in pursuing post-secondary education, work-based learning, or the Military. The Department of Defense sponsors the ASVAB, but participants have no obligation to talk to a Military recruiter or enter Military service. However, students in 11th and 12th grade can use their scores to consider enlistment.
The assessment will take place on Friday, December 12th at 7:30am in the Media Center and will run 1st and 2nd hours. Score interpretation will be on Friday, January 10th during 5th and 6th hours in the Media Center. Please sign up using the attached Google Form BEFORE Friday, December 5th. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Petit in counseling.

Tutoring Options at BHS
National Honor Society's After School Tutoring is underway! If your student is in need of extra help, we encourage them to reach out to the teacher first, as they will be the best resource, but have shared this option with them as well, so please feel free to do the same. NHS students will be available to tutor students in room B-1 from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tutoring is free of charge. For more information about after school tutoring or for a list of NHS students who are willing to tutor, go to https://bit.ly/BrightonNHSTutoring Please note: our after school tutor will leave at 2:45 if no students have arrived by then.
In addition to After School Tutoring, we have another tutoring resource available for our students. Every year, the BHS Counseling Office generates a list of adult tutors that can be shared with students and families as an additional option if After School Tutoring doesn't work for them for any reason. These tutors have reached out and asked to be on our tutoring list as a resource to BHS students and families. They have self-reported their qualifications. All adults who are not BAS teachers have passed a background check. It is the responsibility of the students and families to find the best tutor for them, arrange meetings, and make payment.
The 2025-26 Tutor List can be found here.
Career Chats (Previously Lunch N Learns)
With moving Advisory out of lunches, we changed the name, but the idea for Lunch N Learns is back, just with a new name! We will be hosting Career Chats this year during Advisory and could use your help. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested in connecting our students with more information on potential career opportunities, we would love it if you could review the information below or share the following information with anyone who may be interested!
Brighton High School is looking for community partners!
We are seeking volunteer presenters to share their careers and experiences with students during our 2025-26 Career Pathways Presentations. Our "Career Chats", previously known as Lunch N Learns, are a great opportunity to inspire the next generation and help students explore future career options.
When: During Advisory on Wednesdays from 9:18-10:16 am (dates vary)
Where: Brighton High School
Who: Individuals from all career fields welcome!
If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Tanya Clark at clarkt@brightonk12.com for more details.

Zekelman Holocaust Center Field Trip (9th Grade)
All 9th grade students will once again be taking a field trip to the Zekelman Holocaust Center with their English classes. These trips will take place over two days. We want you to have this information so you/your student can plan accordingly. Upcoming FAFSA Night - December 9th at 6 pm
On December 9th at 6pm in the Media Center at BHS, we are hosting a workshop to help seniors and parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to apply for financial aid for their first year in college. As a public service, a financial aid representative from Oakland University is facilitating the workshop. Please register using the link below and follow the instructions to prepare.
Please register HERE by 11/17/25! (*If we do not have at least 15 registrations by this date, the FAFSA Night will take place virtually rather than in-person)
Before you attend the FAFSA Workshop:
Student applicants and each parent contributor should each create their own FSA ID at studentaid.gov (if a user does not have a social security number, they will need to create their account at least three days in advance.)
Determine which parent(s) will contribute information to the FAFSA if there are multiple households to consider- https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/is-my-parent-a-contributor.jpg
Record each studentaid.gov login in a secure location or on Step One of the FAFSA Worksheet.
Review the FAFSA Checklist to gather information necessary to complete the FAFSA.
If you are unable to join the workshop on the date/time selected, you can access OU hosted workshops open to anyone regardless of college choice on the Financial Aid Events website.

Recent Fentanyl Fathers Presentation for Seniors
On Wednesday, our Seniors attended an impactful assembly by an organization, Fentanyl Fathers, whose mission is to prevent illicit fentanyl poisoning and overdose deaths among America's youth.
You can access their website here, where the following information is shared regarding their approach: "Led by a dedicated group of bereaved parents who have personally experienced the devastating loss of their own children to opioid-related tragedies, Fentanyl Fathers takes a proactive approach to combat this epidemic. We believe that education is the key to prevention, and our focus lies in high school assembly presentations, Naloxone distribution, and trainings in schools."

Xello Post Secondary Planning Presentations for Juniors
Please see the message below from this year's Junior counselor, Mrs. Caverly regarding Xello presentations that took place this past week with their social studies classes:
On November 19th and 20th, I met with 11th-grade students in groups through their Civics/Econ/AP Gov/AP Macro classes to work on their EDPs (Education Development Plans) in Xello. During these sessions, we addressed standards set by the State of Michigan by completing the following 4 tasks:
- Researching and Saving 3 Colleges
- Researching and Saving 3 Scholarships
- Completing the Choosing a College Lesson
- Completing the Work/Life Balance Lesson
While most students finished in the allotted class time, those who were absent or unable to finish should complete them by December 19th. They can do this by logging into their BHS student Xello account.
Here is a copy of the presentation shared with students. In addition to the Xello tasks, this presentation also includes valuable career/college/post-secondary resources, such as:
- Michigan's Public Universities Guide to Admissions
- Michigan College Guide Fall 2025
- BHS Post Secondary Planning Smore Page
Though the assignments focused primarily on college preparation, in accordance with state standards, we also discussed other post-secondary options, including: apprenticeships, military, trades, and the workforce.
Lastly, students received a copy of their current transcript! We dedicated time discussing important elements of their transcript, including their cumulative GPA, class rank, total credits, and the courses they are enrolled in for 2nd semester.
Should you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to me (caverlyj@brightonk12.com).
MiCareer Quest Trip
This week the BHS Counseling Department took 28 sophomores to the MiCareer Quest in Novi, where they experienced a hands-on look at real careers in healthcare, IT, construction, and advanced manufacturing. This was a great opportunity for our students to learn more about these high needs fields.
