This is a reminder that students should not be dropped off at Albert Schweitzer before 8:50 a.m. every day. If you drop your child off before then, there is no adult supervision outside of our school building. For the safety of your children, please do not drop off and leave your child before 8:50 a.m. Doors open promptly at that time.

Also, car riders are to get out on the passengers side of the car. No children should be getting out of the vehicle on the driver's side of the vehicle. This is to ensure the safety of all students.

Teachers at Schweitzer will continue to be a part of a grade-level Professional Learning Community (PLC) this year. The goal is to focus on teaching and learning and provide additional time for teachers to review student data in order to target instruction related to planning, differentiation, and assessment to drive student achievement. They are also working on team building as they continue their collaborative efforts among their grade-level team members.

The Parent Advisory Council will review and revise the Schweitzer Parent and Family Engagement Policy as well as the Schweitzer Home and School Compact. Light refreshments will be served. Child care will also be offered for children over the age of 3. We look forward to seeing you!

New Curtains for Lockdown Drills-Thank you Mrs. Tavares! New Curtains for Lockdown Drills-Thank you Mrs. Tavares!

zoom_out_map

We now have new curtains for Lockdown drills in each of our classrooms thanks to Mrs. Meg Tavares. Mrs. Tavares volunteered her time and skills over the summer to sew over 30 window curtains for our classrooms so that windows are covered for Lockdowns in our building. This curtain blocks the view of the classroom for anyone in the hallway during a Lockdown.

Students completed our first Lockdown Drill on Monday, September 16th. The purpose of the drills is to ensure that we have a plan if there is a real emergency and to keep everyone safe. Conducting these drills helps to ease anxiety for students and staff in an emergency situation. Lockdown drills are done every other month and Fire Drills are done monthly. Students and staff did an amazing job following expectations and students were quiet and cooperative during the drill.

Some favorite books she shared included Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems and I am Human: A Book of Empathy by Susan Verde. Students also have an opportunity to get to know Dr. Orlando and her role as principal of the school.

Schweitzer Classrooms Equipped with Sound Systems Schweitzer Classrooms Equipped with Sound Systems

Thanks to the Albert Schweitzer PTO and money raised from recent 'Tech Trots,' all classrooms are now equipped with teacher microphones and sound systems. Research has shown that Classroom Audio Technology (CAT) provides a high level of speech intelligibility and evenly distributed sound throughout the classroom. Our students spend 75% of their school day involved in listening activities. The primary channel for learning is hearing. The better children can hear, the more they can learn. For maximum learning to occur the teacher’s voice must be highly intelligible. All students benefit from CAT. Teachers using CAT also report less repeating of instruction is necessary and fewer reminders are needed. Thank you to the PTO for raising money for these helpful resources!

School Entrance Procedures School Entrance Procedures

Visitation of parents is encouraged and always welcomed. However, we do ask that prior arrangements be made before visiting the classrooms. In addition, we are sure you will agree that the security of the building and the safety of our students are paramount to all of us.

Upon entering the building, all visitors must register at the Kiosk with their valid driver's license in the entrance of the school for any business that you may have in our building, e.g., signing in late students, dropping off items, parent meetings, etc. After registering at the Kiosk, please proceed directly to the front office to sign in and obtain a visitor’s pass. This pass must be worn in a prominent place at all times while in the building. At the end of the visit, please return to the office, sign out and return the pass.

We value the health, safety, and welfare of our students, therefore at no time should parents or visitors enter the school building and go directly to their child's classroom or any other area of the building. In an effort to protect our students, all staff members will be required to ask anyone they see in the building for the visitor's badge. Staff members will respectfully direct any person without a badge to the front office.
