MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Franklin Students and Families,

This has been an exciting week where we honored and celebrated student culture and tradition at the annual BIPOC assembly on Thursday. Students proudly and joyfully performed dances and led contests showcasing their language and backgrounds. On Tuesday our band students played alongside the Oregon Symphony in the Side-By-Side concert conducted by Su-Han Yang. Congratulations to all of our performing artists!

Next week on Thursday teachers will teach one of two Erin’s Law lessons to 9th, 11th, and 12th grade students (10th grade students are taught the lessons in Health classes). Oregon law requires schools to provide lessons on personal safety, abuse prevention, and healthy relationships through Erin’s Law and the Healthy Teen Relationship Act. These age-appropriate lessons help students understand consent, boundaries, and how to recognize unhealthy or abusive behaviors. Students also learn how to support peers and seek help from trusted adults. The goal is to give students the knowledge and skills to build respectful relationships and stay safe. We will be presenting two lessons this year, one on 3/19, and the other on 4/29. For more information review this document about Erin's Law.

Happy Women’s History Month! Since 1987, Women’s History Month has been a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. The National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA), which led the movement to declare March as National Women’s History Month, has announced the theme for 2026 is Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future. Click on the link above to learn more.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Please be aware that there will be a lockdown drill taking place at Franklin on Wednesday, March 18th. The purpose of this drill is to practice & learn what to do in the event of a real lockdown emergency. In an effort to make sure students and families are aware of what the drill will look like, and what students will be expected to do in case of a real emergency, teachers will share this slidedeck with their 2nd period classes on March 17th.

NEW: Erin's Law Lessons

NEW: Rose Festival Coronation

Congratulations to Jee Jee Chontso, who was just coronated as Franklin's Rose Festival Princess!

Jee Jee is a junior who is passionate about science, service, and celebrating community. She is involved with the Asian American Association and earned the Community Choice Away at the Build a Brain Neuroscience Competition. Jee Jee plans to attend a four-year university to prepare for medical school, with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. Outside the classroom, Jee Jee enjoys hiking, photography, and volunteering with youth and community programs, including time spent volunteering at OMSI where she loves inspiring young children to explore science. One of the moments she is most proud of in high school was performing a traditional Tibetan dance at the "My Story and My Community" event representing Franklin's AP Chinese program, sharing her culture and personal story on stage. Her favorite Rose Festival tradition in the Grand Floral Parade, where enjoys seeing the entire Portland community come together to celebrate the city.

Jee Jee had this message for the community: "Thank you to Franklin staff and students for all of their support.”
