Civics 101
The Need for Civic Engagement- Presented at East Hartford Public Library
On Tuesday, October 28, several East Hartford residents convened at East Hartford Public Library to discuss the history and importance of Civic engagement in the United States. The program was initiated by Anna Eisnen, Adult Services Librarian at the East Hartford Public Library and was presented by Kathy Ladd, Citizenship teacher from East Hartford Adult Education. The history of civics throughout the ages was discussed and how the influence of past civilization civic participation played a role in the development of our government structure was reviewed.
A short video which highlighted the misinformation held by many citizens regarding government structure was viewed. This lead up to an activity in which the importance of engagement and knowledge of government structure became evident in dealing with local, state and federal issues.
Becoming an involved member in your community rests on knowing how to navigate the structure of local, state and federal government. Whether the issues deal with health insurance cost, homelessness issues, rezoning of land in your neighborhood or so many others, success is based on how to get community members involved and initiating help and support from elected officials. Civic is not just a course; it is a necessary tool in our country. Several paths were discussed during the workshop and all agreed more community members need to become involved in civic engagement.
