MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Franklin Community,

We are off to a wonderful start this school year with fall sports underway and the kick-off of auditions for the Broadway Musical Revue happening this week. Audition Classes will start Tuesday and Wednesday after school at 4:00pm in the auditorium and dance room.

This week will be our first flex/tutorial of the year on Wednesday and Thursday in the morning. This year teachers can assign students to meet with them during flex. This will show up in StudentVue as periods 13 and 14. Students are required to stay on campus and meet with a teacher or attend a school sponsored activity during that time. Students can meet with a teacher in their classroom, study quietly in the library, or sit in the cafeteria for a more social space with games and activities. In the future we will also feature guest speakers and presentations in the auditorium. Click here to learn more about flex/tutorial.

Congratulations to our 14 students that earned the AP Capstone Diploma™ based on the scores released from the 2026 AP® Exam administration! Approximately 34,100 students at participating AP Capstone schools around the world earned this distinction and 14 are from Franklin. Other students are still working toward earning the diploma.

We would love to have you join us as part of the Franklin Site Council! The Site Council is a group of parents, community members, students, and staff who meet to help inform and shape school planning. Meetings typically take place virtually once a month, on the second Monday from 4:30–5:30 pm. If you are interested in joining the council please reach out to please reach out to me at znaegele@pps.net our Business Manager at sharvey@pps.net.

There is an opportunity for Native students to join the PPS Native Student Council. If you are interested, apply using the information on the flyer below. Let Dr. Z know if you have any questions.

Have a wonderful weekend and see you on Tuesday!

NEW: Site Council Needs You!

Franklin Site Council is a group of parents, community members, students, and staff who meet to help inform and shape school planning. Meetings typically take place virtually once a month, on the second Monday from 4:30–5:30 pm.

We are looking for staff, students, and community members who are interested in joining the committee. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested, please reach out to the principal: znaegele@pps.net or the business manager: sharvey@pps.net. Thanks so much!

NEW: Club Creation Time!

Do you want to start or continue a club at Franklin?

Club Creation Forms are available in the SUN Office SS-110.

NEW: PPS Rightsizing Community Engagement

As Portland Public Schools continues the rightsizing process, we are committed to creating multiple ways for our community to learn, ask questions, share perspectives and be heard.

Between September and December 2026, PPS will offer several types of engagement opportunities, including formal Public Listening Sessions with the Board of Education, informal Community Connections with select Board Directors, and dedicated Community Voice engagements for communities of color and families of students receiving special education services. Each opportunity may look a little different, but they share a common purpose: creating meaningful ways for community voices and experiences to inform the process.

We encourage all families to take a moment to read about the various community engagement opportunities and to find one or more that best meets your needs.

You can learn more and RSVP here.

Important Drop-Off and Pick-Up Guidelines

Franklin families, if you drive your students to and from school, please pay very close attention and be very cautious! Woodward gets extremely congested with cars and pedestrians in the mornings and afternoons. Please remember that students are NOT to be dropped off or picked up in the staff parking lots; we suggest that you find a spot about a block away that you consistently use for dropping off and picking up. It will cause you less stress and it will help with congestion and make it safer for students arriving on foot. Thank you!

Meet the School Nurse!

Hi all! I'm KT (they/them), and I amexcited to be returning as the school nurse at Franklin. The best way to contact me is by email at ksimeon@pps.net or by phone 503-916-5140, ext. 84352. As we get settled in, this is a reminder that if a student has a medical need or takes medication during the school day, including emergency medication, there are necessary forms to fill out. If you have access to a printer, you can find the forms here and bring them in. I'm excited for a great school year and looking forward to meeting those of you I haven't yet!

Class Contributions and Fees

Families who can are asked to help contribute funds to classes and programs each year. Our operational budget does not cover all course supplies and costs, so we rely on contributions from families to enhance the classroom experience for students.

Classes that have optional contributions associated with them are listed on SchoolPay. Donations and payments for athletic fees, yearbooks, The Post subscriptions, uniforms, library fees, sports passes, etc. can also be made through SchoolPay.

Attendance

Attendance is taken for every class period that meets on a given day. Please plan to report and excuse all absences in the way that best suits you:

Cell Phone Policy

For the 2026-2027 school year, Franklin will be a phone-free space for all students to foster a more focused and engaging learning environment using a program called Yondr.

While we believe that phones have great utility, we have found that learning and social behavior improve significantly when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates. Along with our belief that school climate benefits from a phone-free environment, Portland Public Schools passed a new district-wide cell phone policy requiring students to have their phones away all day. In order to meet the requirements of the district policy, every student will secure their phone and smartwatch in a personally assigned lockable Yondr pouch upon arrival at school. At the end of the school day, students will have access to unlocking stations to open the pouches. Students are responsible for bringing their assigned Yondr pouch to/from school daily. Limited exceptions will be based on specific medical needs.

The cost for the initial purchase and startup for Yondr pouches is sizable. We have added the cost of the Yondr pouches to the list of suggested donations and we will be collecting donations all summer for this cause. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help cover the start-up costs, please use this link.

Do You Need a Locker?

Any student who wishes to have a locker can request one in the main office. No students have been automatically assigned a locker this year.

Trivory

Every student and family member should download the Trivory app to their phones. We use Trivory to send out immediate important school information about activities, clubs and athletics. This is also a great resource for Tri-Met bus schedules and to see the daily bell schedule at your fingertips. Visit trivory.com/franklin to download the app today. Trivory is completely free and you can control your own notification preferences.
