New Work Plan Overview and Hot Topics/Opportunities
Brainstorming and Discussion
- Abbe spoke about LPS/Waverly/Norris and soon Pius X using Vape Educate for first offenses of youth caught with vape devices at school. This takes place during in school suspension. SCIP referrals are made and SCIP does provide quit resources. Some referrals going to substance use evaluations - which may not be appropriate for youth only using nicotine. Often providers don't work solely with nicotine use. Mental health/behavioral health evaluations can also be referred. Long wait times for both. School counselors and social workers are also involved, but it may be possible to provide them more resources and information. Abbe offered to make some connections with LPS.
- Shelby spoke about the INDEPTH program offered through the American Lung Association. This program requires a facilitator. Possible options could be parents, other partners or programs. Barrier identified around school personnel having the capacity/time available. Shelby offered to connect the coalition with Erin from American Lung Association. Could be an opportunity to learn more about INDEPTH and potential training opportunities.
- Ranae spoke about the Catch My Breath program which has prevention resources for K-12. Ranae offered to provide a regional training about the program. Program could be youth led. Options like offering through the Lighthouse, health classes, community groups like Inspire Girls, etc. Ranae mentioned possible partnering with American Lung Association/INDEPTH to do a dual training about each program. Ranae also mentioned mini-grants available to youth that facilitate events. Requires an adult sponsor, completion of an evaluation, and success story submission. Youth can receive $250 for one event and $500 for two events. More information on that as requested. Ranae plans on a Statewide Youth Leadership group in the near future.
- Sadie discussed the pre-game radio opportunity. Coalition decided the best topic would be around the Lincoln Smoking Regulation Act and prohibition on vaping indoors.
- Discussion around how to make most effective use of the coalition considering the workplan tasks, goals, and partners. There does seem to be increased energy around tobacco education and prevention efforts, potential policy change opportunities. Group suggested more frequent coalition meetings, monthly or bi-monthly, to keep engagement. Group discussed pros and cons to committees or task forces. There may be some ways to increase coalition communication - such as through a platform like Asana. Conversation will continue as we move into this grant cycle.
