NC General Assembly House & Senate Page Program (10-12)

The House Page Program offers young people the opportunity to learn about, and participate in, the legislative process of our state. It is a four day long experience that allows high school students that are currently in grades ten, eleven, or twelve to observe firsthand how our laws are made. It provides them the unique privilege of working in the House Chamber in the midst of legislative action.

House Pages are important to the operation of the General Assembly as they assist the Members and staff of the House during the legislative session. They participate in daily sessions, committee meetings, and perform other duties including, but not limited to, delivering messages and materials within the legislative complex, completing mailings for Members, and passing out documents or running errands in the House Chamber during daily sessions.

Selection Process

The selection process for this program is highly competitive. Official appointments are made by the Speaker of the House based on recommendations by individual Representatives. Students submit their application to their Representative who selects the individuals to be appointed by the Speaker. Appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Application Process: The student should:

  • determine the North Carolina House District in which he or she resides. A House District can be determined at the following link www.ncleg.gov/FindYourLegislators
  • contact their House Member to express interest in the program and request sponsorship.
  • complete the online application or print and complete a hard copy application (including essay question and recent color photo). The application is available here: www.ncleg.gov/House/ PageProgram.
  • submit the completed application online or send/deliver a hard copy application to the sponsoring Member for signature.

Click here for more details about the House Page Program.

******************************************************************************************************

The Senate Page Program offers students the opportunity to learn about and participate in the legislative process of our state. It is an experience that enables high school students in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade to observe firsthand how laws are made.

Senate Pages assist members and staff of the Senate during the legislative session. They are given the unique opportunity to work on the Senate Chamber floor and in committee meetings, in the middle of the legislative action. Pages perform additional duties including, but not limited to, delivering messages and materials within the legislative complex, clerical work, distributing documents and running errands.

Selection Process

Senators are allotted a certain number of students they can “sponsor” each session. Each Senator has their own criteria which they use to select Pages. The selection process for this program is competitive. Official appointments are made by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate based on recommendations by individual Senators. Appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

FREE SAT PREP RESOURCES

Connor LaFountain and Timothy Portuese are high school students completing a service project as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program through their high school located in Queensbury, New York. As part of this project, they created free SAT math practice resources designed to help students prepare more effectively:

  • An Instagram page that posts short SAT math walkthroughs and problem-solving strategies
  • A free website with SAT-style math practice questions and explanations

The goal is to provide quick, accessible SAT math practice for students who may not have access to expensive prep programs. In the first month, the Instagram page reached over 350,000 views, which suggests many students are actively looking for this type of help.
