We have had so much fun this year in the art room. From scarecrows to sea otters, umbrellas to cupcakes, we've covered so much! Kindergarten students learned all about basic skills, safe material procedures and color theory, all while having fun and being creative. First graders are my color experts, we really dove into color and material exploration this year! For second graders, the end of the school year was all about making sculptures. I mean, did you take a look at those delicious Model Magic cupcakes and adorable golf ball characters? What an incredible group of artists we have here at Woodland! I hope you all have an incredible summer, and KEEP CREATING!

Ms. Beebe & Mrs. Brown combined art and STEM for Field Day to create a super cool STEAM project: EXPLODING PAINT ROCKETS! For this project you will need film canisters (you can find them on Amazon), watered down tempera paint (we found a 50/50 mixture works well) and Alka Seltzer tabs. That's it!

Here's how you do it:

  • Put a little bit of paint in the bottom of the film canister, just a little more than enough to cover the bottom.
  • Drop in a HALF TAB of Alka Seltzer and put on the cap to the film canister.
  • SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE, put canister upside down on a paper or ground and STAND BACK!
  • In a few moments, your canister will pop up into the air, leaving a colorful paint splatter in it's place!

Experiment with different colors, different temperatures, and even different ratios of paint to Alka Seltzer tabs to see what works best. If you decide to try this over the summer, please email Ms. Beebe & Mrs. Brown so we can see your results! Have fun!

P.E. with Mr. A. P.E. with Mr. A.

What a Year!

P.E. was a blast this year! And of course, we cannot forget all the fun we had on Field Day!

I would like to send a HUGE SHOUT OUT to our fabulous PTO for all of their generous support at Field Day with providing shirts, snacks, and the bounce houses! You made it a memorable day for our kiddos!

I'd also like to say thank you to all of our parent volunteers on Field Day. We could not have done this without you!

Thank you to the Southwick Fire Department for coming and setting up the Firefighter's Obstacle Course!

And last, but not least a HUGE SHOUT OUT to Mr. Pescitelli for showing up bright and early with his truck to help me set up for this day!

Have an awesome summer!

Stay active!

STEM with Mrs. Brown

What an amazing year we had in STEM! We learned about so many different things, from the solar system and habitats on Earth to volcanos and robots. Students in all grades tackled various science and engineering challenges, watched and performed science experiments, and impressed me with all of their brilliant scientific thinking and the connections they made. I want to encourage students and families to continue to explore and learn about all things STEM this summer, and I can't wait to see you again in the fall!

This year all student's became computer experts! Students have blown me away with their block coding skills, their typing skills, and their Paint 3D art skills. We learned a lot about internet safety, safe searching, and digital balance this year as well. Students have created beautiful art books as well, using computer programs such as silk, this is sand, and Paint 3d. We also have had so much fun playing with Bee Bots, and sphero Mini bots. I am so excited for next year and adding even more exciting activities for everyone to participate in!

Music with Mrs. Peirce Music with Mrs. Peirce

Hello Marvelous Musicians!

We have had so much fun in music class this year! All students from Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade voted on their favorite Musician of the Month. Check out the picture below to see who won! Iโ€™ve also included a link to our Spotify Playlist, which has music from all our amazing musicians.

Kindergarten

We finished reading and listening to The Carnival of the Animals and created our own animal song with Chrome Music Lab Song Maker. Iโ€™ve included a video of The Carnival of the Animals story and a link to Chrome Music Lab so you can create more beautiful music over the summer!

First Grade

We learned about long notes and musical form and had our final round of centers. We took a survey in September and again this last week to see how much we learned this year. First Grade brains have grown quite a lot! Check out some of the sing-along videos on the Visual Musical Minds YouTube page.

Second Grade

In our final musical adventure at Woodland School, Second Graders composed a beautiful song based on the book It Starts with a Seed. Be sure to check out the wonderful programs on Chrome Music Lab and some excellent sing along and play along videos on the Visual Musical Minds YouTube page.

Thank you students and families for a wonderful school year!

Visual Musical Minds

Visual Musical Minds

Hi, I'm Nathan Walby, creator of Visual Musical Minds. What started as a flipped-classroom project for my elementary music classes, has slowly grown into a much larger collection of music-instructional videos. For myself, I use these videos every day in the classroom to help students conceptualize and understand music in a much more visual way as I slowly learn and master the technology to create them.
