A Message From Principal Miller A Message From Principal Miller

Dear Families,

I want to begin by thanking all the parents who attended our open houses for newly qualified families. We had more than 40 families join us last night, and your help giving tours was deeply appreciated. Your partnership truly makes these events successful.

I’m also excited to share a brand-new family event happening this year! Our PTA and second grade teacher, Ms. Rifkin, will be hosting a Purim Celebration on March 10 from 6:30–8 p.m.

Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the bravery of a Jewish queen and her cousin, who spoke up against injustices provoked by the king’s advisor. The celebration will include costumes, delicious food, games, and crafts.

We do have a small request:
The planning committee is looking for additional costumes or dress-up items for a dress-up station at the Purim party. The goal is to provide students with fun and creative items to use in a photo booth. If you have something we can borrow, please send it to the office labeled with your name (or your student’s name) and teacher so we can return everything after the 10th. Thank you for helping make this event special for our whole community.

State testing is also coming up soon. The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) testing window opens March 3rd, and we expect to begin testing in mid-March. The SBA is administered to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and includes two tests in both reading and math. In addition, our 5th graders will take a science assessment.

The reading and math assessments includes:

  • Computer Adaptive Test (CAT): Multiple-choice and short-answer questions that adjust in difficulty depending on student responses.
  • Performance Task (PT):
    • Reading: Students read two articles and respond to a writing prompt (opinion, narrative, or informational).
    • Math: Students work through a real-world scenario, often involving planning or building.

Teachers will share specific testing dates soon. For the Reading CAT, students may use headphones. We do have some available, but if your child has a personal set, it would be helpful if they could bring them during testing.

Today, some of our second, third, and fifth graders had the opportunity to visit Thornton Creek’s Artifact Day. Students there brought items that celebrate their culture and heritage, and we were able to see beautiful artifacts—including clothing over 100 years old, handmade lace, stunning quilts, cherished books, and many meaningful family items. We attended last year as well, and it is always a highlight for students to explore and appreciate such a rich display of history and culture.

This Saturday is the Decatur Chess Tournament, open to students from across the district. It is truly inspiring to see so many students come together to play, learn, and challenge themselves. Good luck to all our chess players, and a big thank‑you to Libin and the entire team who work hard to make this event happen.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Purim Party Request:

The PTA is hosting a Purim party on Tuesday, March 10, 6:30-8 p.m. You may be asking, “what is Purim??”. Purim is a Jewish holiday celebrating the bravery of a Jewish queen and her cousin who spoke up about injustices provoked by the king’s advisor. It is a bit like Jewish Halloween with costumes, delicious food, games, and craft. We hope you’ll join us!

Now for the ask…We are in search of a few more costumes/dress-up items for a station at the Purim party. If you have anything that would be fun for kids to dress up in for a photo booth, a little acting, etc. please bring them to school and send them to the office with your name (or child’s name) and teacher so we can return them to you after the 10th. Thank you!!

Dear Decatur Parent/Guardian:

The Cascade Bicycle Club (www.cascade.org) supports a bicycle and pedestrian safety curriculum called “Let’s Go”. It’s delivered district-wide in 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Physical Education class. Our Decatur unit will be from Wednesday, March 4 to Monday, March 23.

Volunteers are needed and greatly appreciated during this important unit. Please be sure you are already preapproved and have volunteer this year at Decatur. If not, check with the main office on getting approved. I truly hope volunteers will sign up for days and times they are available, even if it’s helping a class that is not your own. Volunteers do not need to be “bike people” or even know how to ride a bike. For example, volunteers help kids put their helmets on correctly, manage a part of the lesson by checking for hand signals or kids obeying a certain traffic sign, or helping one student learn to ride while I teach the rest of the class.

What is the schedule?

The 4th and 5th Grade Schedule is not consistent and hard to paste and cut.

3rd Grade P.E. – Mondays and Tuesdays

Ms. Kleinhanz, 12:20-1 p.m. Ms. Adams, 1:05-1:45 p.m.

Make eye contact, unplug, stay alert, wear reflective clothing at night, never jaywalk, watch for turning vehicles

May I use my own bike?

No. Due to equity and liability policies in the agreement between Seattle Public Schools and Cascade Bicycle Club, students may not use their own bikes.

A set of 30 bikes and helmets will be at our school for this three-week unit, 5 or 6 P.E. lessons.

May I wear my own helmet?

With caregiver permission, students may choose to bring their own bike helmet to school. It must be approved for bicycles, so check for a sticker inside that says something like “Complies with CPSC Safety Standard for Bicycles”. Some skateboard helmets are not approved for biking. Students wearing school district helmets will also be provided a protective hair liner to wear with it.

What should I wear? Please wear safe biking clothes and shoes (NO flip flops, NO dresses). Be aware that wide pants can get caught in the chain. Also, please be prepared for the weather. Some of the bike lessons we be outdoors.

What if I don’t know how to ride a bike yet?

I have taught many kids how to ride a bike in my 25 years as a P.E. teacher. I am especially good with kids who are anxious, who are afraid of falling, or struggle to learn at home. We can meet on a weekend or after school to learn. Some kids may have told you they don’t want to learn how to ride a bike, but perhaps preparing for this bike unit will motivate them. Teaching kids to ride a bike is an absolute passion of mine and I love it! Please reach out if you’d like some help learning to ride!

Questions, comments, or concerns please contact Jeannie Bastasch, P.E. Teacher

Thinking of Volunteering? Thinking of Volunteering?

There will be many opportunities to volunteer this year. If you are considering becoming a new or renewing volunteer in 2026, the screening process can take up to 6 weeks. Please plan ahead and reach out to the Decatur staff member for whom you'd like to volunteer. This will ensure that you are sponsored and can begin or renew your volunteer status in time!

Please contact our Volunteer Liaison Ms. Jessica at jksmarttsilv@seattleschools.org if you have questions or need more information.

Math Fair is coming! March 23rd – 27th Math Fair is coming! March 23rd – 27th

Participation is open to all Decatur students and is optional.

Projects are due on Friday, March 20, however late projects will be accepted and displayed during the week of Math Fair. Projects may also be turned in as early as March 16th.
