Setting a Strong Academic Foundation

We've begun to settle into the routine of the school year with our teachers and students diving into the curriculum. Learning is happening, students are being academically challenged, and homework is being assigned and completed. I wanted to let you know that next Week (September 15-19) students will be completing their NWEA MAP Testing in middle school.

What is NWEA MAP Growth testing?

NWEA MAP Growth testing is an adaptive assessment that adjusts the difficulty of questions based on each student’s responses, giving teachers a detailed picture of what a child already knows and what they are ready to learn next. Unlike a traditional test, it is not about passing or failing, it’s about measuring growth over time. Maranatha's teachers use MAP Growth results to set learning goals, differentiate instruction, and provide targeted support so that each student is challenged appropriately and able to make progress at their own pace.

How can I, as a parent, best support my child?

Parents can support their children by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and head into the day with encouragement. Remind them that this assessment is simply a tool to show growth, not a grade.

We encourage parents to support their child with encouragement and reassurance rather than pressure, remembering that the purpose of the test is to show progress and highlight areas for growth.

Most importantly, remember that scores are just one piece of the puzzle. Your child’s God-given worth and potential extend far beyond any test result. This score does not define who they are. At Maranatha, we use this data as one way to celebrate growth while continuing to help students flourish academically, spiritually, and personally.

Let’s make it a great year, Middle School!

Blessings,

Allen Banks

Middle School Chapel from September 8 Middle School Chapel from September 8

This week in chapel, we looked to Christ's example to build a community that is authentic, transparent, and God-honoring. In John 13:1-17, Jesus took the time to wash His disciples' feet before the Passover Festival. Jesus was willing to serve and love His disciples even when He knew that some of them would betray him. Peter, the disciple who was commissioned by Christ with a great call in Matthew 16:13-20, would deny Jesus three times. We, as a school, were challenged by Christ's example in chapel. As we participate in community-building events such as 40:31 in the High School or Character Hour activities in the Middle School, let's look to Christ and his demonstration of service. Our greatest prayer is that the students and staff of MCA would not only know Jesus but would be transformed by Him.

Scripture Referenced in Chapel:

John 13:1-17 - Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet

Matthew 26:17-30 - The Last Supper

Feel free to have your students read a few of these passages.

Questions to consider to ask your students/answer yourself (Please feel free to modify them to match the age of your students):

  1. Jesus washed Peter's feet even though He knew Peter would deny him. What does this show us about Jesus? Would you be willing to serve someone with grace and humility knowing that they would betray you?

  2. It was emphasized in chapel that hype can't be the foundation of our community. Discipline and serving are key to building a Christ-centered community. What role do we have in cultivating a community that is God honoring?

  3. This question may not have a verbal answer, but it is good for them to think about. What people at school do I need to forgive? Why is the act of forgiveness a form of service?

This week in Ms. Stites’ math class we talked about how math is the study of patterns. When we look at the world God made, we see he created it with intentionality and order. When we look at math problems with an eye for noticing patterns, we see that same order and structure. To start off the year, we did a challenge called 100 Numbers. Working in teams, students tried to circle all 100 numbers during the time. It wasn’t until we noticed and named the pattern that we had our greatest success.

As we continue into our first topics, we will continue collaborating with classmates and looking for patterns that will help us become creative problem solvers!

Student Schedules Student Schedules

Rotating Fridays

Middle School Friday schedules rotate between two versions: Friday (A) and Friday (B).

  • Friday (A): A normal rotation of M, W, F classes.

  • Friday (B): Also known by some students as “Repeat Week,” where students repeat their Thursday class schedule.

This rotation helps us balance instructional time across all classes. To make it easier, your child’s schedule will note whether it is a Friday (A) or Friday (B). Students will see and hear reminders of these so students will know what Friday schedule to follow.

Here is what our upcoming rotation will look like:

Friday (A) - September 12

Friday (B) - September 19
