BEH Weekly Family Message

BEH Weekly FamilyMessageOctober 5, 2026

Hello BEH Panthers!!

Last week was a busy one! We completed our first week of 3rd grade swim lessons and had our lockdown drill last week. It was great to see the students get in the water and start building their confidence while they learned water safety and swimming basics. We also got to ensure that all of our students processed how to safely navigate our emergency drills.

This week we only have a four day week, as there is a statewide inservice day on Friday. That means we go into a three day weekend and then when we return it will be the first day of SUN School for the term.

Below you will find info about happenings this week and events that are coming up soon:

BEH PTA Updates:

Greetings from the PTA--

RUN for BEH is October 16th. Our fundraiser is live. We are working together to raise $10,000 for learning experiences like field trips and performing artists at BEH assemblies and more! Find your student’s page here: link Share with friends and family to make it easy for them to support your student at BEH. Interested in volunteering for the run? Join us by signing up here: Sign Up

Our next dine-in event is October 8th, THIS THURSDAY at Brave Neighbor Coffeehouse & Social – that friendly coffee shop inside the laundromat at 750 N. Fremont. Mention BEH with your order anytime that Thursday and a portion of the proceeds will support the BEH PTA. Game night starts at 6:00 and is a great spot to meet with friends for fun and increase your impact. See you there!

The next PTA meeting is October 13th. Join us in person or online at NOON. This month we are trying something new to see if attending a PTA meeting on a lunch break is easier than an evening time. We will review and vote on our budget for the 2026/7 school year.

Save the date for Harvest Fair. October 22nd at 5:00 for costumes, games and food! We need adults to make this fun for everyone. Sign up to volunteer!

  • Supporting the PTA is easy with ongoing fundraisers like Bottle Drop, Fred Meyer Rewards, Raise Right and the BEH Paw shop.

  • Follow PTA events and more on BEH Panthers Shared Calendar, click here. Note: this calendar includes events for grades K-5. The pre-K program follows a different calendar. Email info@behpta.org with any questions or corrections.

Site Council:

We have our first Site Council Meeting this evening virtually. We will be reviewing and discussing our schoolwide data, looking at strategies, discussing ideas for family collaboration, reviewing how "rightsizing" will impact BEH, and getting feedback and ideas around our next steps and future work. This is a collaborative team of parents, teachers, and community members. If this is something you may be interested in joining, let me know. We would love to add another family or two to our team. We meet once a month after school and will likely shift between virtual and in-person based on the needs of the team.

TAG Info Night:

Jamison Jouno (our TAG Coordinator) and I will be hosting a TAG Info Night for BEH families that would like to learn more or ask questions about TAG services this Thursday in the BEH library at 5:00 PM. Community Resources: Community Resources:

Center for Black Excellence Tutoring Jobs:

The Center for Black Excellence was at our Back to School Night sharing about the Third Grade Tutoring, 5th Grade Dream Days, and other amazing work they will be doing with our community. They are currently looking to hire and train tutors to do some of this work this school year. They shared this Indeed link for folks to apply to become a tutor at CBE if you are interested.

Rebuilding Center Open House:

Hello Boise-Eliot/Humboldt Community,

We’d love to invite our neighborhood students, families, teachers, and staff to the ReBuilding Center’s ReUse Open House on Thursday, October 8, from 4 to 7 p.m.

And we have some seriously fun things planned for kids!

Come check out Portland’s first electric powered garbage truck, get creative with hands on reuse arts and crafts, explore real tools in our Future Builder Tool Exploration Area, grab dinner from food trucks, and discover all kinds of ways things can be repaired, reused, transformed, and kept out of the landfill.

There will also be music, Little Library raffles, family friendly activities throughout the evening, and a chance to get your picture taken with our beloved RBC icon, Ella Rose.

We’re bringing together 10 local reuse organizations for the evening, giving families a chance to explore everything from building materials and creative reuse to repair, recycling, furniture, and community resources.

We’re also excited to welcome Congresswoman Maxine Dexter and Oregon DEQ Director Leah Feldon to the celebration.

The ReBuilding Center has called this neighborhood home for nearly 30 years, and we would especially love to fill the Open House with families from right here in our community.

Come after school. Bring the kids. Grab some food. Make something. Explore some tools. Climb up close to an electric garbage truck. And have some fun with reuse.

Please feel free to share this invitation with your entire school community. We hope to see lots of Boise-Eliot/Humboldt families on October 8th.

Check out the flyer here.

Warm Regards,

Debra Vanderwerf

Executive Director
