DC CAPE Announcements
This week was the start of DC CAPE, our annual district-wide assessment. DC CAPE is very important, so we ask that you please make sure that your student rests, eats breakfast, and spends time away from screens when they get home!
🥖 Snacks! 🥫
After taking CAPE, students are often hungry and cranky. To prevent this, the school has asked us to request donations of snacks so our students don't become hangry in our direction!
Here is the link to our amazon wishlist with food items - please donate and please make sure that your student eats breakfast every day!
A huge thank you to the families who have already donated - we appreciate you!!
📖 Books! 📚
When students finish DC CAPE early, they can draw with pencils or they can read a book. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD ARRIVES TO TESTING WITH A BOOK!! This is essential to make sure that your students do not become distractable and loud once finishing testing.
Schedule
During DC CAPE, students will spend their mornings testing. This means that we have to alternate the morning classes (1 and 2) with the after lunch classes (6 and 7). Periods 3, 4, and 5 happen every day, since they are the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade lunches, respectively.
If you are curious, please read the schedule below!
Club Announcements
New Club - Roller Skating Club! 🛼
From Ms. Clark,
Roller-Skating Club! Due to interest from students, I will be sponsoring a roller-skating club in the near future. Stay tuned for details. Currently, I have several students who are interested in being involved who do not have roller skates. If you would be interested in helping provide roller skates for students who need them, please email me directly at katlyn.clark@k12.dc.gov so that we can get students their correct sizes.
Debate Team Tryouts
Debate Information and Tryouts
Interested in learning more about the national champion Deal speech and debate team and what it takes to be a member, come to a 30-minute information session on Monday, May 11, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. During this meeting we will be going over the tryout sessions which will occur on May 13, 2026 (for rising 7th graders) and May 14, 2026 (for rising 8th graders) from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Unfortunately, due to the large number of students who typically to try out for the team ONLY these dates for tryouts will be offered for next year's team. The debate team is limited to 7th and 8th grade students and tends to top out at 35-40 debaters.
What Does It Mean to be a Deal Debater?
Students selected for the team will be placed in advisory with Mr. Stroud where the bulk of the teaching and learning occurs. Students will be learning about Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas style debate in the fall and Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Declamation speaking events in the winter and spring.
After school meetings occur for practice rounds and individual teaching/tutoring during the year on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Students are expected to attend at least two Tuesday sessions prior to participating in each tournament.
Many students will say that joining the debate team is similar to taking an extra class in school. Research shows that students who participate in all aspects of a debate program will experience significant growth in reading and writing scores on most standardized tests. While there is a great deal of research, writing, and debating/discussion done in preparation for each tournament, the end result is a great deal of FUN once actually participating in a debate round.
Are You Ready to Debate?
The following expectations must be met in order to be a successful member of the debate team:
- Students attend all advisory classes AND complete advisory activities appropriate to their grade level.
- Students attend Tuesday after school sessions for individual/team debate practice rounds at least twice a month.
- Students agree to attend a minimum of 4 local tournaments during the school year. Most tournaments take place from 8 am-6 pm one Saturday per month. Students are required to attend the full duration of each tournament they attend.
- Students maintain a B or better grade in all of their core and non-core classes.
- Students possess the ability to work independently, in pairs, and in a small group to meet research and writing deadlines.
- Parent judges are necessary for debate tournaments to function. Therefore, there is an expectation that parents will volunteer to judge at least two tournaments each year.
We will hope to meet those interested in debate on May 11, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. In R102 for the information session. Tryouts will occur in the same space beginning at 3:30 pm on Wednesday (5/13) and Thursday (5/14).
STEM For Her 5k Run and Walk
Our names are Priya, Sophie, and Saara, and the three of us went to Deal for all of our middle school years. For our 8th grade community service project we successfully hosted a 5k Fun Run to raise money and awareness for STEM for Her. While we are now 9th graders we are thrilled to announce the race is returning on May 3rd in Fort Reno Park!
All race details, including sign up links and donation page, are provided in the poster we have attached. We would appreciate it so much if you could share our poster in your newsletters.
This project means a lot to us. STEM for Her empowers young women and girls to change the world by providing scholarships and financial support to programs that foster interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) related careers. As young women who want to pursue careers in STEM we felt very lucky to have the opportunities to continue that learning. This issue is especially important right now as the Trump administration has been dismantling diversity and equity programs in the sciences where women are already marginalized.
Thank you so much!
Priya, Sophie, and Saara

Let’s all take a deep breath. *Inhale, hold, exhale.*
Hello Team Paramaribo!
We are halfway through CAPE testing. Scholars worked diligently to complete the Math sections of the assessment, and they will sit for the English Language Arts sections of CAPE next Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: May 4th, 5th, and 7th.
Ask: Please ensure that your scholar gets consistent, quality sleep over the next week. Research shows that sleep affects students’ focus, concentration, learning, and academic performance, and that sleep loss can build up over multiple nights. For that reason, scholars should aim for consistent, quality sleep throughout the week, not just the night before testing.
Below, I’ve included additional resources if you are interested in learning more about the assessment scholars will complete next week:
In class, we will continue our film study comparing the 2014 movie adaptation of The Giver to the novel we read together in class. Yesterday, April 30th, I sent an email with the subject line “The Giver Film Study in ELA Class (Opt-Out Information Included).” This message explains the film’s PG-13 rating and the opt-out process if you would prefer for your scholar to complete an alternative assignment instead of watching the film. Please respond to that email as soon as possible if you do not wish for your child to participate in the film study. We will conclude the week in English class by returning to Unit 4, Our Changing Oceans. Students will select their own informational readings related to climate change’s effects on ocean life, ecosystems, and coastal communities.
As always, please ensure your scholar is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. Regular independent reading is one of the best ways to strengthen comprehension, build vocabulary, and reinforce the skills students need to be successful.
Math with Mx. Gomez
This week all students have done a great job getting through Math DC CAPE! I’m so proud of all the hard work students have been putting in all year and have applied this week.
Students have also been collecting data for their Statistics Project these past few days. This weekend students are to be finalizing their projects by turning them into Power Points to be presented next week. If your student does not have a device at home, I encourage that you turn to your local Public Library as I have offered times after school twice this week and a few students came to begin their projects with me. Students MUST share their presentations with me by Sunday at midnight.
There will be NO AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING this upcoming week. Thank you for your understanding!
Math 6
Once we complete presentations students will begin reviewing area of triangles and area of parallelograms.
Accelerated Math 6 Students will have RCT #5 the week of the 11th and their EOY iReady diagnostic will begin on May 26th. In order to feel prepared for the EOY diagnostic, my recommendation is to ensure your mathematician is completing their iReady MyPath lessons. If students have questions about the lessons on their MyPath, they may come chat with me during recess tutoring on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday’s.
Math 7
Once we complete presentations students will begin learning about complementary and supplementary angles, how to find missing angles using equations and learn more about angle relationships. Their EOY iReady diagnostic will begin on May 26th. In order to feel prepared for the EOY diagnostic, my recommendation is to ensure your mathematician is completing their iReady MyPath lessons. If students have questions about the lessons on their MyPath, they may come chat with me during recess tutoring on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday’s.
No Paramaribo Tutoring During CAPE
Due to DC CAPE, Paramaribo Tutoring will be cancelled for the week of May 4th.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
This week, students completed their Economics Unit Test. They worked hard to apply their understanding of different economic systems.
Next week, students will shift into a creative application of their learning by designing their own economic systems. This will allow them to think critically about how governments make decisions about resources, production, and distribution.
On Friday, we will begin our International Museum Project. Students will begin creating a project centered on an aspect of Suriname, and we will transform our classroom into a museum. The museum showcase will take place on Friday, May 22nd—more details to come as we get closer!

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello Scientists,
Congratulations on a wonderful first week of CAPE! This past week, our classes discussed natural disasters and the architectural features that we build to mitigate damage.
Due to the variances in CAPE scheduling, some classes were able to begin their official building process this past week, while others will be starting next week. During their build time, students worked with clean trash and recyclables to create a structure that could withstand 3 types of natural disasters.
Next week, students will continue building, testing, evaluating, and presenting their structures. Please ask them about their plans and strategies to maximize success, and feel free to explore the neighborhood where you live to identify real-world examples of weather-resistant design!
Donation Request: More Clean Trash
As we gear up for our final build stage, we still need more clean trash and recyclables! If you are able to, please donate clean items such as:
Cardboard
Plastic Cups
Egg cartons
Milk cartons
The plastic nets that fruit comes in
Twist Ties
And non-trash items such as
Plastic Wrap
Glue
Pipe Cleaners
New twist ties
Zip ties
Tape
As well as any other items that you can find that your students can shape into a structure using scissors and their imaginations!
Roots!
Students will have their next roots quiz on Friday, May 8th. Their roots are:
- Syn, sym = same, with (think synonym, symmetrical, synchronized)
- Ortho = straight (think orthopedic, orthodox)
- -dont, dent = tooth, teeth (think dentist, orthodontist)
- -logue = speech (think dialogue, monologue)
- -osis = action, process (think osteoporosis, mitosis, halitosis)
Keepers:
Mono, Dia, Fract, Anthropo, Auto, Biblio, Psych, Derm, Cardio
Notes from MLL Support
Last week we finished Math CAPE testing and practiced using dictionaries. Students did a phenomenal job being on their best behaviors during testing. Next week we will start ELA CAPE testing. Students will continue to practice using dictionaries as a part of their testing accommodations.
