Important Policy Updates
Cell Phones & Technology
Under House Bill 4141, students cannot use personal wireless devices during class time, except as allowed per "Cell Phone Use" Policy details in the Student Handbook. This includes cell phones, smart watches, headphones/earbuds, and anything else that can text, call, play games, use the internet, send photos or videos, or email. Only district-provided devices are permitted unless approved by an administrator.
Teachers and staff may confiscate any device if a student breaks this rule, the student code of conduct, or classroom guidelines. In the event that a Wireless Communication Device has been confiscated the following steps will be taken:
- 1st Offense: Taken to the office & Returned to student at end of day.
- 2nd Offense: Taken to the office & Released only to parent/guardian at end of day.
- 3rd+ Offense: Taken to the office & Requires admin/parent/student meeting & potential for daily check-in of device in the office.
Find the Student Handbook for each School on the District Handbook Webpage
Attendance/Tardy Policies
Tardy Policy:
- Tardy (1–5 minutes late): Arriving after the bell when not in your assigned seat.
- Absent (10+ minutes late/missed): Arriving 10+ minutes late or missing more than 10 minutes of instruction, during any point.
Consequence:
- 4 Tardies per class per semester = 1 Hour of Saturday School.
Attendance Policy:
- Excused: Absences for approved reasons, outlined in the Student Handbook, and/or confirmed by parent/guardian calling in.
- Unexcused: Missing school without a valid parent note or skipping class.
- 3 Unexcused Absences/Semester: Early intervention letter sent home.
- 5 Unexcused Absences/Semester (Truant): Parent meeting requested.
- 8 Absences/Semester: Placed on Credit Review Status; must make up time in Saturday School and submit an Attendance Appeal if passing.
- 8+ truant days/Semester (Habitual Truancy): Can lead to alternative placement, court hearing, or referral to legal authorities.
No Pajamas Permitted at School!
Our goal is to help prepare you for the future, and learning how to dress appropriately every day is an important part of that.
As a general rule, your clothes should always be clean and fit both the weather conditions and a normal school environment. Most importantly, pajamas and pajama pants are strictly forbidden at school. If you show up wearing sleepwear or any other inappropriate clothing, you will be required to change immediately. This means borrowing extra clothes from the district, waiting for your parents to bring you a new outfit, or being sent home to get changed.
Repeated dress code violations may result in more severe consequences.
The final decision in any situation involving inappropriate attire rests with building administrators.

IT'S TIME!... Review Your Child's Immunization Records
All students entering EK, K, and 7th grade for 2026-27 school year, as well as any newly enrolled students since January 1st, will be audited for vaccinations this coming fall. These audits have an effect on our funding. If you have a child in this category please make sure their immunizations are current over the next 3 months.
All public school children must have an up to date immunization record or a waiver on file to attend. If you choose not to vaccinate, you will still need to go to the health department for a waiver appointment.
Visit the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines for the complete immunization schedule. Most 7th graders will need to begin their Meningococcal Series and get a Tdap booster to begin school in the fall.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, call:
Dickinson-Iron District Health Department at
(906) 774-1868 or (906) 265-9913

Welcome to Iron Mountain Public Schools!
Congratulations Mrs. Dawn Hazelwood, Kindergarten Teacher
Dawn Hazelwood is thrilled to fulfill a lifelong dream as she starts her first year as a kindergarten teacher at North Elementary. While this is her first year leading her own classroom, she is a familiar face in the district. She served as an Educational Assistant from 2018 through 2025 and completed her apprentice teaching during the 2025–2026 school year.
Ms. Hazelwood chose IMPS because the district feels like a close family, and she loves how warmly they welcomed her and her family. She is passionate about helping students, and her favorite part of teaching is seeing the big smiles on her students' faces every day. This school year, she is most looking forward to connecting with her new students and building strong relationships with their families. In her free time, her favorite book is Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business, a special story she won in a math game from her own second-grade teacher!
Welcome Ms. Marti Nord, School Success Coach North Elementary
Marti Nord is joining Iron Mountain Public Schools as the new School Success Coach at North Elementary. Originally from the area, she graduated from Northern Michigan University with a degree in Social Work and has worked in the mental health field for the past six years. She chose IMPS because of the district's strong commitment to student mental health and its constant effort to improve the learning environment.
Ms. Nord is deeply passionate about making her local community a better place. She actively volunteers with the community theater and works to create more opportunities for local youth. In her new role as School Success Coach, she is most looking forward to teaching students valuable life skills that will help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Outside of work, Ms. Nord lives with her fiancé, their dog, and 16 chickens. She enjoys watching reality TV and diving into thriller novels, with Freida McFadden currently being her favorite author.
Welcome Mr. Blair Anderson, Secondary Education Student Teacher Iron Mountain High School
Blair Anderson, a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, is joining Iron Mountain High School as a secondary education student teacher for social studies and history. He will be mentoring under Mrs. Pietrantonio. Born and currently living in Crystal Falls, Master Sergeant Anderson wanted a student teaching placement close to home where he could receive a quality hands-on education to finish his degree. He is excited to learn from the team at Iron Mountain High School and be part of such a great school program! Thank you, Mr. Anderson, for your service & Welcome to IMPS!
