Fourth Grade Fourth Grade

Students in the 4th grade are working on the unit Magnets and Electricity. To practice the idea of lighting a bulb, the students in Mrs. Gartenmayer's class tried out using the components of a wire, a c-cell (battery) and a bulb to light up. With some trial and error everyone finally figured how to make it work. They created a working circuit. Each student received their own supplies to try this out.

Our Future Engineers

The 4th grade AE students are preparing for the K'NEX Challenge, and are currently learning how to conserve energy using wind power. Annalise Seckinger and Maya Kopansky created a sail car model. Their goal was for the sail car to travel 50 feet under 10 seconds. After 3 tests and modifications to their sail car, they were able to go from 17.32 seconds to their best time of 9.27 seconds. They found that they needed to catch the wind with lighter parts than have a flat sail to push the car. The quest of this learning and the K"NEX Challenge is to create a model that uses renewable energy (wind, water, and solar) to save energy within their home.

Mrs. Ratka

Hi, I'm Dianne Ratka, but most students call me "Ms. Dianne". I have been a recess aide with Neshaminy School District for the past 12 years, starting at Lower South and now at Tawanka. Each day my fun begins with directing traffic during morning drop off... in the sun, snow, sleet or rain. (I'm the one who refuses to use an umbrella!) Recess is a special time for me, especially this year with our modified recess and social distancing since I get to spend more one-on-one time with the students. I also help with lunches and enjoy volunteering where needed, especially with PTO activities. My family and I love to go on cruises, and we are also avid Eagles fans. My special interests are bowling, reading, and watching Hallmark movies. I feel very fortunate to work at Tawanka with such wonderful teachers, staff and students.

Readers are Leaders Fundraiser

Tawanka will be running our annual fundraiser from 1/25/2020 - 1/29/2020. This year it is an all virtual fundraiser - just 3 easy steps! Students who participate will be given a small prize to bring home. Please see the flyer below and watch the following informational video: https://youtu.be/TyicZ72li6o

NEF Raffle

Last spring, the popular Neshaminy Education Foundation Spring Basket Raffle fundraiser was postponed as the pandemic set in. Now it's back, and it's time to match two lucky winners with some great gift cards! The drawing will be held on Monday, February 1 and the winners notified with a happy phone call. Tickets that were already purchased in schools will be added to this drawing. Good luck and thank you for supporting the Neshaminy Education Foundation!

Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10 and can be purchased here: https://www.neshaminy.org/Page/42428

Tawanka Safety Procedures

Safety of all students and staff is a top priority at Tawanka, and so we have strict safety procedures in place. A reminder of the following:

Building Entry: All visitors must scan their driver's license or state issued ID at the kiosk in the front vestibule and wait for entry. This is required at every visit, or access will be denied.

Early Dismissals: Please notify the teacher if your child will be picked up early. If being picked up by someone other than a parent/guardian, please specify who will be picking up your child. Students will only be released to individuals listed on the emergency card, but the office must be notified prior to pick-up. Students must be signed out in the main office. Again, driver's license or state issued ID is required to pick up a student.

Please join us for our next PTO Meeting on Wednesday February 3rd at 10:00am.

A zoom link will be sent out via email prior to the meeting.
