Academic Focus Spotlight
Building a Strong Foundation: Focusing on Tier I Instruction
with Assistant Superintendent, Dr. MacLean
As we continue to grow our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) programming, our district is turning its attention to the most important layer of learning: Tier I instruction. At the heart of this work is a simple belief that all students can learn at grade level. To make that belief a reality, we must plan, teach, and assess with intentionality.
When students are taught below grade level, they are likely to remain below grade level. To ensure that every learner has the opportunity to grow and succeed, our district is committed to aligning instruction with grade-level expectations while providing the support students need to access and master the content.
This year, we have initiated new pacing guides at the secondary level. These guides are designed to guarantee that all grade-level standards are taught consistently and thoroughly. Many of our secondary teachers began this work during summer professional development, and the process will continue throughout the school year, with a goal of updating most course guides by March.
At the elementary level, our instructional coaches and administrators continue to focus on fidelity of instruction, ensuring classrooms reflect consistent, high-quality practices.
Our updated pacing guide format provides clarity and consistency by outlining:
Units of study
Planned assessments and timeframes
Connections to grade-level standards
Allocated hours of instruction
Through this work, we are building a strong foundation for MTSS, ensuring that Tier I instruction sets every student on a path to meet and exceed grade-level expectations.
Stories From The District
Get in the Game: 2025–2026 District Theme
This year, Oak Grove R-VI is rallying around a simple, old-school truth: participation builds pride. Our theme—“Get in the Game!”—is a call for every student, staff member, and family to lean in, show up, and do the work that wins the day.
Here’s how we’re playing it:
-
Academics: Tier I, grade-level instruction is our foundation. We plan, teach, and assess with intention so every student can compete at the highest level in the classroom.
-
Attendance: Being present is non-negotiable. Consistent attendance is the first “W” of any season.
-
Character: We hold the line on respect, responsibility, and doing things the right way—on campus, on teams, and online.
-
Involvement: Clubs, arts, athletics, service—pick a lane and commit. If you’re in, be all in.
-
Family & Community: The stands matter. Your support, volunteering, and positive voice fuel our momentum.
Bottom line: We’re building strong fundamentals and a tight-knit team culture. Lace up, show up, and get in the game with us. This is how Oak Grove wins—together.

Working Together to Combat Chronic Absenteeism
On September 18th , Superintendent Hampton and Oak Grove High School Assistant Principal, Mr. Newman met with Oak Grove city leaders to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing schools nationwide—chronic absenteeism.
They shared a comprehensive plan of action designed to improve student attendance, strengthen accountability, and ensure that every Panther has the support they need to succeed. By partnering with the city, schools, and families, this initiative will focus on:
-
Building stronger school–community connections
-
Increasing awareness about the impact of absenteeism
-
Offering resources and support for students and families
-
Holding consistent expectations across the district
Together, we’re committed to creating a culture where showing up matters—because every day in class is a step toward success.
School Safety Tips: Transportation Safety
From Safety Coordinator, Michelle Alexander
At Oak Grove R-VI School District, student safety is our top priority—not just inside the classroom, but on the way to and from school as well. With the new school year underway, it’s important to review some key transportation safety practices with your family. By working together, we can ensure every Panther gets to school and back home safely.
Walkers
Walking to school is a healthy and safe choice when families establish clear rules and practice them together.
-
Always use sidewalks when available. If none are present, walk facing traffic.
-
Stop before crossing, and look left, right, then left again.
-
Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk.
-
Cross only at intersections or designated crosswalks.
-
Stay alert—put the phone away and keep your head up.
Bike & Electric Scooter Riders
Cycling is a great way to travel, but it comes with responsibilities. Help your child learn and practice their bike route before riding alone.
-
Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and always in single file.
-
Stop completely before crossing; walk bikes across intersections.
-
Stay focused—no earbuds, texting, or distractions.
-
Wear a properly fitted helmet and bright, visible clothing every ride.
Bus Riders
The school bus is one of the safest ways to get to school, but good habits make it even safer.
-
Visit the bus stop with your child to review how to board and exit safely.
-
Always stand at least six feet (about three big steps) from the curb.
-
If crossing in front of the bus, walk until you are 10 feet ahead, making sure both your child and the driver can see one another.
-
Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching.
Driving Your Child to School
For families who drive, your attention makes the difference. Drop-off and pick-up zones can be busy, so patience and focus are key.
-
Follow school zone speed limits and your building’s drop-off procedures.
-
Have backpacks ready so students can exit quickly and safely.
-
Students must remain in vehicles until school doors officially open.
-
Make eye contact with children crossing the street.
-
Never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children.
Final Note
By modeling safe choices and practicing them consistently, we set students up for success on their daily commute. Thank you for taking time to review these safety reminders with your family. Together, we can make every arrival and dismissal safe at Oak Grove R-VI.
Trauma-Smart: Caregivers Guide to Technology
with Building Social Worker, Jessica Fugate
There has been a lot of discussion about Missouri's SB 68, restricting the use of electronic communication devices during the academic day in schools statewide. This aligns with growing concerns about distractions, screen dependency, and student focus.
Technology is now central to our children’s lives, and guiding them safely can feel overwhelming. Here’s a bite‑sized guide to keeping it simple and effective at home:
1. Know the Digital Landscape
Familiarize yourself with the apps, games, and platforms your child uses. A quick online search can help you assess age recommendations and safety guidance.
2. Set Shared Ground Rules
Agree on the following together:
Screen Time: Balance learning and fun.
Content: Clearly state what you consider to be okay based on your family's values and expectations (and how to act if your child encounters inappropriate content).
Location: Decide where devices can be used, shared spaces improve oversight.
Privacy: Remind kids that nothing online is fully private. Encourage keeping personal details to themselves and respecting others’ privacy.
Safety: Reinforce that if anything feels strange or uncomfortable, they should talk to a trusted adult right away.
