The Eagle Eye
The Eagle Eye - October 9, 2026
#EaglePride
Dear Washington Families,
What a fun and busy week at Washington! We kicked things off with our first family night of the year; it was wonderful to see families learning and connecting together as they explored strategies for understanding emotions and managing big feelings. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
Our Eagles also took their second Eagle Airways flight to Culture Crossing, where they had a great time playing Lotería, learning about children in Latin American countries, and practicing curiosity and respect for others. It was a fun way to continue reinforcing our SOAR expectations while learning about the world around us!
We also completed our third and final fire drill of the year, and our students did an outstanding job! We had our fastest building exit yet, and students and staff demonstrated just how much they've learned about our safety routines and expectations. We are so proud of our Eagles!
Finally, a reminder that there is no school on Monday, October 12. Enjoy the long weekend, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday!
Have a great weekend!

New Information
Your Input is Important!
Families are important partners in making Washington a welcoming and supportive community for every child. We invite you to share something you appreciate, an idea that could strengthen our school, or a way we can better support students and families.
All feedback will be reviewed regularly and considered as we plan for Washington’s continued growth. While we may not be able to act on every suggestion, every thoughtful contribution helps us better understand the experiences and perspectives of our families.
A Reminder About Toys at School
We are asking families to please help us by keeping toys and other personal items at home, including stuffed animals, fidgets, NeeDohs, squishy toys, and similar items. While we know these are fun and comforting for our young learners, they have increasingly become a source of distraction and conflict during the school day, particularly in bus lines and on the bus.
Our Eagles are still learning important skills like sharing, respecting others' belongings, and navigating friendships. Having toys at school can sometimes make those situations more challenging, especially when students want to touch, borrow, or take an item that belongs to someone else.
Please help us by checking backpacks and reminding your child that toys should stay at home unless specifically requested or approved by their teacher. We appreciate your partnership in helping us keep our classrooms, bus lines, and buses safe and focused on learning!
Join BPAC for a Día de los Muertos Celebration
Join us on November 2, 6 - 7:30pm for our annual Día de los Muertos celebration hosted by BPAC!

Notes from our Specials Team
Art
We are creating artworks inspired by the Fall season. We are also celebrating the end of Hispanic Heritage month by learning about artists and art from Hispanic culture.
Library
Book checkout is underway! Our Kindergarten students are currently checking out 1 book each week as they learn how to use the library and practice checking out and returning their books to school. Starting in the first week of November the Kindergartners can check out 2 library books each time they visit the library. Our 1st and 2nd grade students can check out 2 new books each week.
Thank you for helping your student return their library books when they are done reading them or within 2 weeks of checking them out!
PE
This month in PE, we’re kicking off our soccer unit and learning the basics of dribbling, passing, and shooting. Students will also be introduced to our Impossible Shot challenge! Ask your child to show you a soccer skill they’ve learned. Keep the fun going at home by kicking a ball around and practicing!
Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th - October 15th)
September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. At Washington, we are proud of the many cultures, languages, and traditions represented within our school community and love finding ways to help our Eagles learn more about the people and cultures that make our community and world so special.
Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Laurie Hernandez
This week, we are highlighting José M. Hernández, a Mexican American astronaut who showed that big dreams are worth working toward! As a child, José traveled with his family between Mexico and California, helping pick crops while also attending school. He dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but NASA turned down his application 11 times before finally selecting him! In 2009, he traveled to space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. Today, José continues to inspire young people to work hard, stay curious, and never give up on their dreams. His story reminds our Eagles that even when something is challenging, perseverance and determination can help us reach new heights!

Visitor Procedures
All visitors, including parents/guardians and siblings, must enter through the front door of the building. Visitors should identify themselves and inform office personnel of their reason for being at school. After being buzzed into the vestibule, you will need to sign in on the iPad using our VisitorAware System. Once you are signed in, the office will let you in the building. This applies even if you are just coming in during the morning to ask a question. All visitors shall wear a printed visitor ID badge if further entry is required. Please be sure to return to the school office and sign out before leaving school.
Remote Learning Due to Inclement Weather
School District 75 is renewing our emergency remote plan for the years 2026 through 2029. This does not require the District to have e-learning days, but gives schools the opportunity to use them should the need arise.
Here is the link to the staff, student and family plan for your reference.
Before the end of September, students in Pre-k-5th Grades will receive a home learning packet that should only be opened and used if we require a home learning day. Please keep your packet in a safe place so you are ready to use it if needed.
Students in 6th through 8th grade will receive directions from their teachers through Google Classroom on the morning of the home learning day.
Attendance Matters!
Strong attendance habits begin on day one. When students are here consistently and on time, they benefit from direct instruction, collaboration with peers, and meaningful relationships with teachers. Please help us by encouraging your child to be present and ready to learn each day, every day truly counts.
Financial Assistance
The Board of Education of Mundelein Elementary School District 75 is committed to ensuring all students have access to educational and co-curricular opportunities. To support this goal, the district will waive all school fees and fines required for participation if a student’s parent or guardian qualifies for assistance. To be considered for a waiver of registration and beginning-of-year fees, returning families must submit their application by October 15, 2026.
Applications submitted after this date will apply only to future fees. New families have 30 days from their student’s first day of school to apply; if approved within that window, registration fees may be waived. After the 30-day period, assistance may still be requested, but it will only apply to future fees.
Read the attached letter from the district to learn how to apply!
