Dear OSES Families,

As we approach the much-anticipated spring break, I wanted to take a moment to mention that tomorrow is Pi Day! Pi Day is a fun and educational event dedicated to the mathematical constant π (pi), which is approximately equal to 3.14. This day is a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore the fascinating world of mathematics in a fun and engaging way.

History of Pi Day:

Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Shaw and his colleagues marked the day by marching around a circular space and then enjoying fruit pies. The date, March 14th (3/14), was chosen because it represents the first three digits of π. Over the years, Pi Day has grown in popularity and is now celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world with various activities, including pi recitation contests, pie baking, and educational presentations.

Spring Break Announcement:

We are also excited to remind everyone that March 14th marks the first day of Spring Break! Our school will be closed from March 14th to March 21st. We hope everyone enjoys a restful and rejuvenating break!

Thank you for your support.

Michael Singleton

STEMpowering Women: Stories of Passion and Perseverance

My name is Shrika Velagapudi, I'm a junior at Orlando Science High School. I took up creative writing as a hobby this past summer, and recently had the wonderful opportunity to publish a nonfiction children’s book about 10 remarkable female scientists from around the globe who broke barriers and accomplished great feats in STEM. Traveling to India every summer, I was devastated to learn how many girls shared my same aspirations and dreams, but simply didn't have the resources or opportunities to bring them to fruition. This drove me to play my part as an advocate for STEM learning and overcoming systemic barriers: 100% of the profits made from my book, "STEMpowering Women", go to funding tech access and education for the millions of Indian girls living in poverty and denied opportunities.

"STEMpowering Women" is a compilation of varying women's journeys to success in the fields of STEM, as they conquer countless challenges and obstacles to prove the world wrong. Mentioned throughout this colorful, inspirational children's book are the tales and accomplishments of women scientists from all over the globe, such as Sally Ride, Antonia Novello, Marie Curie, and more. The aim of this book is to inspire young children, especially girls between the ages of 4 and 10, to take up careers in the field of STEM, and break gender barriers in this male-dominated area.

It would mean a lot to me if you all could check out my book, share with all your family and friends, or even leave a small review to bring awareness to the cause.

This week in Kindergarten students completed their quarter 3 STEM challenge! Students designed and created traps that would attract and catch a Leprechaun. Students considered what would be the best shape, color, and size of the trap and why as well as which materials would best carry out the functions needed. After sketching their designs, students built their own traps. When we return from the break students will see if any of their traps were successful!

This week, our first graders have been diligently wrapping up their Reading and Math units in preparation for Spring Break. Their hard work and dedication have been truly commendable!

Our first graders also participated in the Science Fair this week, proudly displaying the projects each class created. Special congratulations to Ms. Nickerson's class for winning the best Science Board project! Kudos to all the winners for their outstanding efforts and creativity.

As we approach the end of the year, please continue working on Study Island, Xtra Math, and IXL. These tools will help our students prepare for the upcoming end-of-year testing.

When we return from Spring Break, we will dive into exciting new topics in Social Studies, focusing on History, and in Science, where we will explore Plant and Animal Observations.

A special shout out to our dear volunteers for their incredible support with the Book Mobile in both buildings at dismissal. Your help is greatly appreciated! We are still looking for volunteers for our Book Mobile; if you are interested, please reach out to Ms. Vancol.

Also, Operation Orca has started. First Graders are happy to be receiving tickets for the raffle for displaying ORCA core values, where they can win big prizes!

We hope everyone enjoys their Spring Break and return refreshed and ready for more learning adventures!

This week in second grade students have been excited about the Science Fair so they could show off what they learned! We had a great time tracking down who “stole” Sir Frosty. Students gathered evidence, dusted/lifted fingerprints, and adjusted their suspect board as the investigation continued! Based on the fingerprints the class lifted, and evidence collected it was determined that Miss Volden had Sir Frosty!

As we approach Spring Break,
it's the perfect time to unwind and recharge. Whether you’re enjoying some well-deserved rest, catching up with friends, or exploring new hobbies, make the most of this break! But don't forget – testing season is just around the corner. After the break, we'll be back and ready to tackle those exams with confidence and focus. Let’s come back refreshed, re-energized, and ready to finish the semester strong!

THIRD THIRD

This week, we continued working on fables, discussing the theme or moral of a story and how it differs from the central idea. The students had so much fun writing their own fables! They got really creative with the themes and characters, which was a great way for them to better understand the concept of a theme.

We also wrapped up our STEM Fair presentations, and I was blown away by the students' hard work and dedication. Their projects turned out amazing, and it’s clear how much effort they put into them.

Looking ahead, the third-grade team is kicking off a Regions Float Project! Each class will focus on a different region, and students will create floats representing states from their assigned region. Projects are due back on April 15th, and we can’t wait to see their creativity shine.

We hope everyone has a wonderful spring break!

FOURTH FOURTH

As we wrap up Quarter 3 in 4th grade, we are so proud of all the hard work our students have put into writing essays and reading about different cultures in module 8. Their curiosity and creativity have truly shined!

One of the biggest highlights of this quarter was our field trip to St. Augustine. From walking through historic streets to visiting incredible landmarks, our students had a blast stepping back in time and seeing history come to life. It was a truly memorable experience that we will cherish for years to come!

As we head into Spring Break, we hope your family enjoys a week filled with relaxation, fun, and quality time together. Thank you for your continued support—we can't wait to jump into Quarter 4 with even more exciting learning ahead!

Have a fantastic Spring Break!

I hope everyone has a great Spring Break. Remember no school on Friday 3/14 and 3/17-3/21! I am sending home a Math Spring Break packet. This packet will be due on Monday 3/24/25. The students can earn Orca tickets for each completed page passing with at least an 80%.

This week in Math we are continuing to learn how to add and subtract fractions. The students are enjoying finding the common denominator.

In Science- we took the PMA3. Each student took their time and worked hard to show what they know. More details will come after Spring Break on which standards need some extra love. We will continue learning about plants and plant life cycles when we return.

See everyone Monday 3/24/25!

Bagnati- Charater Education

What a fantastic few weeks we've had in Character Education! Our students have been learning and growing so much, and we’re excited to share what we’ve been up to!

  • Kindergarten & 1st Grade: We've been exploring emotions like anger, belonging, and sadness. We are wrapping up this unit with the Scribble Spot, a fun way to express and understand how we can have a mix of different emotions at once.

  • 2nd Grade: The focus has been on growth mindset and understanding bullying. Next up, we’ll dive into our conflict unit, where students will discover how to see things from different perspectives.

  • 3rd Grade: We’ve just finished exploring teamwork and conflict skills, and now we're moving on to tackling bullying.

  • 4th Grade: Our conflict resolution unit is wrapping up with the Step-It-Up method, and soon, we’ll be creating posters to showcase all that we’ve learned!

  • 5th Grade: Students are putting the finishing touches on their conflict resolution projects. Whether it’s a brochure, comic, or script, the projects look amazing!

It’s been a busy and rewarding time, and we can’t wait to keep learning after Spring Break! Wishing everyone a well-earned and relaxing break! 🌸

SIXTH SIXTH

Frog Dissection

This week, our 6th-grade students experienced hands-on science with an exciting frog dissection lab! This lesson gives students a unique opportunity to explore anatomy up close, helping them understand how organs and body systems work together in living organisms. By identifying structures such as the heart, lungs, and digestive system, students gain a deeper appreciation for biological functions and anatomy. This experience not only reinforces their understanding of life science concepts but also encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and respect for the complexity of living things. Special thanks to Ms. Jersey and Ms. Zarate for all the hard work it took to make it happen!
