Miners in the Middle
September 28, 2025

Principal's Message
We have an exciting but busy week ahead, and I’d like to highlight a few important reminders:
🏟 Spectator Guidelines
Both middle school and high school have home games this week, and with Homecoming Friday, we expect large crowds. Please remember that spectator guidelines will be strictly enforced:
-
Middle school students and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
-
Students must remain in the stands unless they are going to the restroom or concession stand.
-
There is no re-entry if you leave the stadium.
These rules are not meant to punish, but to keep our students safe and ensure that the environment is positive and enjoyable for all.
🎉 Homecoming Spirit Week
We look forward to seeing everyone’s Miner Pride during dress-up days. Please remember that the dress code still applies, with the exception of hats when they are part of the day’s theme.
📖 Literacy Grant & Amira
Our district has received a literacy grant that provides new opportunities to support our students’ reading growth. As part of the grant, students will be using Amira, a program that listens to students read and gives immediate feedback to help improve fluency and comprehension. We hope to complete our beginning-of-year benchmark in Amira this week. The results will help us individualize reading instruction and select students for after-school tutoring (more details to come soon).
📅 Calendar Reminders
There is no school Monday for students, as it is a staff work day.
Midterm exams are October 7th & 8th.
Thank you for supporting our students, our school, and Miner Nation!

HMS Building-Wide Expectations
Classroom Expectations
These are our school-wide expectations for our students. Positive behavior fosters an environment where ALL students can learn and grow. It is our hope that our HMS families will discuss our school-wide behavior expectations and encourage positive behaviors at school and home.
Common Areas Expectations
Our school-wide expectations extend beyond the classroom. It is important that students also realize they are accountable for their behaviors in the hallway, cafeteria and at all school sponsored activities on and off campus.
OSSAA has teamed up with COUNTRY Financial to launch the Gridiron Giveaway! This is our school’s chance to win a donation that will be presented live at the OSSAA State Football Championships, presented by COUNTRY Financial this fall. All you need to do is submit your information and give our school the opportunity to bring home the prize.

- Attendance Reminder - To be counted present for a class, a student must be in class for at least 30 minutes.
- Students more than 20 minutes late to a class (without checking into the office within that time) will be counted absent for that class.
- Students leaving more than 20 minutes before the dismissal bell will also be counted absent for that class.
Tips for a Successful School Year
To help you start strong, here are a few simple ways to set yourself up for success:
-
Be organized: Use your planner daily to keep track of assignments, projects, and important dates.
- Ask for Help Early: If something doesn’t make sense, don’t wait until you’re behind — talk to your teacher or counselor right away.
- Use Your Time Wisely: Stay focused during class, and finish your homework daily.
- Be present: Attendance matters! Being here every day helps you keep up and feel confident.
-
Get involved: Join a club, sport, or activity to make friends and try new things.
-
Be respectful: Kindness and good behavior make our school a great place to learn. A good attitude goes a long way!
Rest Well: Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep — and put those phones away at night so you’re ready to learn each morning!
LOCKER TIPS FOR A SMOOTH YEAR
Lockers are a middle school tradition—but they can be tricky at first!
-
Don’t overstuff it – Only keep what you need for the day.
-
Use shelves or organizers to make extra space.
-
Practice your combination until it’s second nature.
-
Avoid storing food—trust me, it will start to smell!
-
Do a weekly clean-out so you can always find what you need.
