KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
We are proud to congratulate our 2026 Spelling Bee Champion, Charity Holt, and our Runner-Up, Emma Christiansen. After an exciting competition on Friday, these two students went head to head for an impressive sixteen rounds. Their perseverance, focus, and sportsmanship were on full display throughout the bee. Charity will represent Kodiak Middle School at the District Spelling Bee on February 3. If she is unable to attend, Emma will step in as our KMS representative. We encourage families to mark their calendars and help us cheer on our outstanding spellers.
We would also like to recognize the newest members of Kodiak Teen Court. These students have taken on an important leadership role within our school district and will work to promote accountability, responsibility, and positive decision making among their peers. We appreciate their commitment to serving our school community.
As winter weather continues, we ask for your help in making sure students come to school prepared for outdoor recess. Please ensure students bring appropriate cold weather clothing, including jackets, hats, gloves, and suitable footwear. Being properly dressed helps keep recess safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Additionally, we will end the week with our first PTSA Friday Night Live event. This is a fun, supervised opportunity for students to spend time with friends and staff in a positive school setting. The theme for this event is Boots and Beats, featuring a country and western atmosphere with line dancing, cowboy bingo, a photo booth, games, prizes, karaoke, and more. A few rules to keep in mind and discuss with your student:
- Attendance on Friday, for at least half of the day, is required to attend the FNL.
- Tier 1 or 2 behavior referrals could result in a student's ineligibility to attend.
- Once a student arrives, they will check in at the entry table, and they must remain inside the FNL area of the building unless a parent/guardian comes inside to sign them out early.
- Wear your best duds, but keep it dress code appropriate.
We can't wait to boot-scoot--and-boogie with everyone!
Lastly, parents, be aware that any student who failed a core class during first or second quarter will receive an invitation this week to participate in Credit Recovery. Core classes include math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. Credit Recovery will begin the first week of February and will take place after school. This program provides students with an opportunity to strengthen their skills and work toward earning credit.
Thank you and if you haven't signed up to volunteer at KMS, it's not too late! We'd love to see you at FNL, or as a drop-in hall monitor, classroom helper, or something else that you might enjoy. Seeing our families in the building helps strengthen our school culture, cooperation, and community and we are HERE! FOR! THAT!

SPELLING BEE WINNER: CHARITY HOLT; RUNNER-UP: EMMA CHRISTIANSEN
.
Friday’s school spelling bee delivered a truly unforgettable finish. With 23 competitors to start, the field narrowed to just two spellers after the 3rd round, setting the stage for an incredible showdown.
Charity Holt and Emma Christiansen battled through an astonishing sixteen(!!!) head to head rounds in a nail biting finale that kept the audience on edge.
Charity ultimately emerged victorious, but not without an impressive and determined effort from Runner Up Emma.
Both students are on standby for the KIBSD Spelling Bee on February 3, from 6-8pm in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium Drama Pod. Charity will represent KMS and Emma will serve as the backup speller should the need arise. This was the longest KMS spelling bee I have ever witnessed and an exciting display of academics and spirited competition.
Congratulations to all who entered! We are so proud of our student spellers!!
Thank you to Ms. Norton for hosting, Ms. Grizz, Mr. Pysher, Ms. Lhotka, and Ms. Bruns for judging, parents, families and friends for coming to support our students!
