ACT vs SAT Key Differences

As our schools in Illinois are making the important change from the SAT to the ACT, teachers are working hard to help students adjust and succeed. We're here to provide them with helpful strategies to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone. Thank you for your support as we navigate this change together!

About the ACT and SAT:

  • Both tests are standardized and widely accepted by US colleges.
  • They are designed for high school juniors and seniors.
  • These tests measure skills like problem solving and reading comprehension.
  • No advantage to choosing one test over the other for college applications.

Similarities:

  • Both have similar sections (Reading, Math, etc.) in a set order.
  • Use rights-only scoring (no penalty for wrong answers).

Key Differences:

  • ACT is longer than the SAT.
  • The SAT has a different number of questions and time limits for each section.
  • Illinois schools are shifting from SAT to ACT.
  • Educators are adapting their teaching methods to prepare students for the ACT

Overview of the basic structural and logistical differences between the ACT and SAT:

Understanding the Key Differences

  • ACT is familiar to Illinois educators but requires a new focus.

  • Consists of five sections: English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing (optional).

  • ACT has 215 questions while SAT has 98 questions.

  • A longer ACT format means that students need stronger pacing skills that the SAT.

Proviso Seniors Visit Triton College

On November 7, 2024, 51 seniors from Proviso East, Proviso West, and PMSA’s College Reading & Writing classes visited Triton College, accompanied by their teachers. Students toured the campus, learned about the admissions process, and participated in Dr. Renee Wright’s RHT101 English class, where they explored essay writing with MLA citations. Proviso students paired with Triton students to discuss claims and evidence, noting similarities with their own studies. Impressed by the tailored classes, health sciences programs, and affordability, students shared positive reflections, calling Triton a "great option for many majors." More visits to Triton are planned for Proviso students.

  • Proviso East

    • Ms. Lanzilloti’s Statistics students visualized data using pie and Pareto charts.
    • Her Integrated Math 2 (IM 2) class honed their skills graphing points in preparation for graphing quadratics.
  • Proviso West

    • Mr. Lopez’s English Learner Freshmen in Integrated Math 1 are mastering foundational math concepts through bilingual instruction.
    • These students, newcomers from Latin America, are developing English and Spanish language skills while exploring math and building social-emotional connections.
