Vampire Bat

While much of the world sleeps, vampire bats emerge from dark caves, mines, tree hollows, and abandoned buildings in Mexico and Central and South America. They glide stealthily through the night air as they search for food. Like the legendary monster from which they get their name, these small mammals drink the blood of other animals for survival.

Rodrigues fruit bat

Rodrigues fruit bat

The name "flying fox" comes from the fruit bats' dog-like face, with their bright eyes and pointy little ears. They have small bodies, and their lightweight bones make it easier for them to fly. Their fur is woolly-golden colored on the head, neck, shoulders, and sometimes back.

Species We Study: Bats | U.S. Geological Survey

Bats make up one-fifth of all mammalian species worldwide and are found on every continent except Antarctica. They contribute to overall ecosystem health by suppressing pest insects and pollinating plants and spreading seeds. Eight North American bat species are listed as federally endangered or threatened, and more than one-half are of current conservation concern in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

What do bats eat?

What do bats eat?

Bats are the most significant predators of night-flying insects. There are at least 40 different kinds of bats in the U.S. that eat nothing but insects. A single little brown bat, which has a body no bigger than an adult human's thumb, can eat 4 to 8 grams (the weight of about a grape or two) of insects each night.
