Counselor Corner

We have started our last SecondStep unit on managing relationships and social conflicts. As your child navigates the sometimes challenging middle school years, it’s important for them to gain one of the most important skills which is managing relationships and social conflicts in a healthy and constructive way. Conflicts are a part of life, so it’s important for students to gain necessary skills to resolve conflicts before they escalate. In this edition of the newsletter, we are going to explore ways we work on friendships with students at school.

  • Respect and boundaries: This includes respecting themselves by setting their own personal boundaries (e.g., saying no to peer pressure) and recognizing others boundaries.

  • Encouraging healthy friendships: What a healthy friendship looks and feels like along with helping them recognize the signs of an unhealthy friendship.

  • Healthy communication skills: Communicating without placing blame by using “I” statements. For example, “I felt hurt when..”

  • Problem solving skills: When a problem arises, looking at all possible solutions that work for everyone involved and considering all perspectives.

  • Know when to seek help: When a conflict is difficult to resolve on their own, talking to a staff member to get help.
