Dear Kindergarten Families,

What an incredible first month of school it has been! As we step into October, I want to take a moment to reflect on all that our youngest learners have accomplished already—and it’s truly something to celebrate!

In just a few short weeks, our kindergartners have taken brave steps into a brand-new world and embraced it with courage, curiosity, and joy. They’ve learned to recognize and feel comfortable with 34 new adult faces who care for them every day. They’ve adapted to a full school schedule, found their way through the hallways of our building, and are learning the many routines and expectations that help our school day run smoothly.

Together, they’ve tackled Alphabet Boot Camp and Number Boot Camp, building foundational skills in literacy and math. They’ve learned how to eat lunch in 20 minutes, transition independently to different settings throughout the day, and most importantly—they’re making new friends and building a sense of community in their classrooms.

In addition, our students have already participated in benchmark screening for both math and literacy, giving us important insights into how we can support each unique learner as they grow. And that’s only the beginning!

Looking ahead, October promises to be a month filled with learning, adventure, and connection. We’ll begin diving deep into our rich curriculum across all areas—Savvas MyView for Literacy, Into Math, Mystery Science, CTGR Tribal History lessons, The Great Body Shop, and Character Strong, our social-emotional learning program.

We also have a number of exciting events to look forward to: our annual Jogathon, two engaging assemblies, a visit from the FLIP Mobile Museum, and participation in The Great ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake preparedness drill. We’re also eager to launch our ONE SCHOOL, ONE BOOK literacy program—an initiative designed to build a love of reading and strengthen the bridge between home and school.

There’s so much to be pr

oud of—and even more to be hopeful for. The growth we’ve seen in just a few weeks fills us with excitement for what lies ahead. Thank you for your continued partnership, encouragement, and support. We’re off to a fantastic start, and the best is yet to come!

With gratitude and joy,

Principal Jen

Safety Response Protocol - SRP

The Scappoose School District uses the I Love You Guys SRP to provide consistent language and routines for our students, staff, and families.

  • Staff and students practice safety routines in case of emergency each month.

  • Fire Drills are held monthly.

  • If you arrive to school during a drill, a sign will be posted on the door, and you will need to wait to enter the building at the completion of the drill.

  • If a volunteer or visitor is in the building during a drill, we expect the volunteer or visitor to fully participate in the drill.

  • We will try to communicate with families when a drill has occurred in order for you to reinforce safe choices and the importance of these routines. We also provide regular, consistent, instruction and reward regarding safe, respectful, responsible, and kind (PBIS)

Standard Response Protocol on SSD Website

🔒 Lockdown Drill – “Lockdown: Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.”

We tell students:

“This is a special kind of safety drill where we stay quiet and stay in one place. Just like when we play hide and seek or play a quiet game.”

Steps for Kids:

  1. Go to your special spot in the classroom.

  2. Stay very quiet like a mouse.

  3. Listen to your teacher.

  4. Wait until your teacher says it's all done.

We do not talk about scary reasons why a lockdown might happen. We keep our language simple, safe, and focused on listening and following directions — just like all our other school routines.

Please know that our teachers and staff are trained to guide students through these drills with calm reassurance. We never want students to feel afraid — just empowered to know what to do, just in case.

If your child comes home and mentions one of these drills, we encourage you to praise them for listening, following directions, and keeping themselves and their friends safe. You are always welcome to reach out if your child seems worried or if you have questions about how we conduct our drills.

Thank you for trusting us with your children. Safety is our top priority, and we are so proud of how our students are growing — in both learning and confidence — each and every day.

SOCKTOBER SOCKTOBER

Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want 2 million people to show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.

Our Warren Elementary School family has set a goal of collecting 500 donations! We will collect donations from 10/1-10/30. We will be collecting youth and adult socks, underwear, and warm blankets. Donations will benefit the Scappoose Family Resource Center @ Warren Elementary School and Rose Haven Day Shelter for Women and Children, 627 NW 18th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 (serving families in Scappoose).

Students will bring their donations to their classroom. We will have a large bin for blankets and a smaller bin for travel size hygiene products located beside our book vending machine. We will celebrate everyone’s efforts with a fun “Silly Sock Spirit Day” event on 11/3.

We’re excited to share that our kindergarteners will attend their very first school assembly on September 30, 2025! Assemblies are a special part of our school culture, and we can’t wait for our students to experience this community event together.

To kick things off, we’re welcoming back a favorite local performer — Red Yarn! Red Yarn is a beloved children's musician known for his high-energy performances, engaging puppets, and folk-inspired songs that get kids singing, dancing, and learning along the way.

If you’d like to get a sneak peek, we invite you to listen to a few of Red Yarn’s songs at home! You can find him on most streaming platforms or visit www.redyarnproductions.com to learn more.

We’re so excited to share this joyful experience with our students — it’s sure to be a highlight of the fall!

The Scappoose Elementary Parent Organizarion (SEPO) Jog-a-Thon is scheduled for Friday, October 3rd. The Jog-aThon engages the whole community (preschool and kindergarten) to promote health choices and movement for our students while simultaneously raising funds for enrichment programs and supplies that support students. Students have came home with pledge envelopes last week. Return envelopes to your classroom teacher with all PLEDGES (no money) the morning of the run, Friday, October 3rd. Kiddos will run during their PE class time. Volunteers are needed, so be sure to get those district background checks in. Families are welcome to come and cheer on their students. All spectators and volunteers will need to check in at the front office prior to coming out to the track.

In an effort to motivate students and families to collect Jogathon pledges, Principal Jen is offering an incentive. When we collect $8,000 in pledge dollars, Principal Jen will turn the Foyer at the main entrance into a FARM for a Day and she will dress as a farmer. She will bring in a mobile farm. Classes will rotate through to meet the animals and learn fun facts. Let’s all work toward this target!

We are so excited for next week’s Fun Run! Remember to keep working on your pledges because this fundraiser supports essential school programs like field trips, assemblies, books, and more. Pledges can be a fixed amount (e.g., $25) or based on laps completed (e.g., $1.00 per lap). We encourage students to ask family and friends for support—and to join you in this process for added fun!

Important Reminders for Next Friday:

  • Please return the pledge envelopes (containing pledge commitments, not money) to your child's classroom teacher on the day of the event, October 3rd. Volunteers will record laps completed, and the envelopes will be returned for pledge collection.
