Lindsay Woychek works with educators throughout the school year to elevate instruction throughout Red Wing Public Schools. From March into May, the district assessment coordinator and instructional coach is busier than ever. This is because K-12 students are taking everything from FastBridge and Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments to the ACT and Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

Teaching and testing, mentoring and coaching Teaching and testing, mentoring and coaching

GET TO KNOW LINDSAY WOYCHEK

You could say that Lindsay Woychek's new role will put her to the test. Literally.

She became the district assessment coordinator and instructional coach in December, bringing 18 years of teaching experience -- 14 of those in Red Wing and most recently at Burnside Elementary -- to the role.

What or who inspired you to go into education?

I was fortunate to have quite a few influential teachers throughout my school years, especially in elementary school. I grew up experiencing how fun school could be through experiential learning and knew that I wanted to be a teacher since I was in sixth grade. As I continued through high school and college nearly all of my work experiences involved teaching or coaching kids!

In terms of this new role, I’ve had some really great mentors and friends who have pushed me to expand on my leadership roles within the education setting which has led me to this new opportunity to work with teachers and students at all levels in our district.

Tell us about what being an instructional coach entails.

Right now, I am focusing my coaching rounds with the teachers who are new to our district this year. I have been the new teacher mentorship coordinator for the past few years and this is a natural transition into the coaching role.

I get to observe the teachers' classrooms, and then work with them on areas that they want to improve on. I help them reflect on their teaching, look for resources, and am able to model different teaching strategies for them when they want a more hands on approach.

Testing season is upon us. What are some of the district assessment coordinator’s responsibilities?

Communication and coordination are the biggest responsibilities currently. We (Director of Teaching & Learning Emily Seefeldt and I) are working on ensuring families and students are aware of the upcoming assessments and that all of the staff members are trained for their various roles with the assessments. Spring is a very busy time of the year with multiple different assessments available to students, which means our time is being pulled in many different directions.

What can you cook to perfection?

Perfection? Nothing is ever perfect and I am very critical of myself. However, I do enjoy cooking and trying new recipes. I don’t know that I have any of my own recipes to share that can’t be found in various cookbooks or online. However, one of my favorite recipes to make is Molly Yeh’s Stollen Granola.

How do you spend your free time outside of school?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends. My niece and nephews are my world and I’m always looking to steal some time with them. I also enjoy reading, attending sporting events, both local and professional, trying out new coffee shops, and spending time at our family cabin.

Red Wing Public Schools continues to build momentum toward Flight Path 2030 through connected learning opportunities that strengthen staff capacity in AI-integrated computing education, which is inclusive of AI literacy, data science, and foundational computer science. Over the past month alone, the following occurred:

On March 5, the Northern Lights Collaborative held a professional development day for instructional leaders interested in learning how to integrate computer science education and computational thinking skills into the core curriculum in any subject area. RWPS staff explored resources and strategies for developing student critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity skills through exploring computer science in the classroom. Teachers came away with ideas, resources, and motivation to integrate computational thinking and computer science into their classrooms.

On March 27, DataSpire provided a virtual coaching session with staff who participated in the foundational data literacy/science training held in February. Teachers shared examples of student work that showed how Wingers are learning to interpret data, recognize patterns, and use evidence to support their thinking. By examining this work together, educators identified next steps to support student learning.

Also on March 27, as a supporting organization for National AI Literacy Day, RWPS was featured in a webinar with aiEDU where Superintendent Bob Jaszczak and RWHS Principal Joshua presented “Flight Path 2030: A Principal’s Blueprint for Building AI-Ready High Schools." That recording and others from the day will be distributed when published.

Together, these efforts demonstrate action to support the district’s Portrait of a Graduate and represent important early steps in Flight Path 2030, RWPS’s long-term roadmap to becoming a Center of Excellence in AI-Integrated Computing Education.
