This Week at MHS
December 8th -12th
SEMESTER EXAM INFORMATION
A final comprehensive assessment is required in all courses. All final exams will be taken during the designated testing period unless prior arrangements have been made with the assistant principal’s office. The administration will review requests to take a final exam at a time other than during the designated testing period for unanticipated reasons only such as illness, family emergencies, hospitalization, etc. If such permission is granted, the exam will be administered after the regularly scheduled exam period. Students will not be granted permission to take the exam prior to the designated date and time.”
PARKING AT MHS
WIth the closure of the parking/access road at the back of the school (by the Auxiliary Gym), we want to clarify the parking situation. S Lot is student parking and some faculty parking only. A lot - in Front of our School Office - is the only location we have visitor parking. Parents who need to pick up a student before or during school must park in a parking space. Please see the photo below. During this time - all deliveries will come through our A lot - and no one can park anywhere but a parking spot. Parent pick up is on Lawrence Avenue at the canopy. Please do not pull into S lot or A lot to pick up your student.
Monday is the last day for students to bring in any change or donations to their first block class. Friday is the last day to donate online at the link below. Thank you for supporting our students and the Family Resource Center.

'Tis The Season for Testing!
Parents and Students – As we enter the testing season at MHS, here are a few reminders to make these days great and productive!
- Limit check outs from December 1 – 12 if at all possible. Students are taking tests at different times through the day. Once a student starts a test, they must finish the test or void the grade.
- Make sure the laptop is charged each night. All tests are digital!
- Get a good night’s rest and be on time! Waiting to start a test until all students are present is not possible. The student will then have to miss class time to take the test on make-up day.
- Be positive and encourage your student to do well!
We appreciate your help and can’t wait to share our student successes!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Here are a few updates from your school counselors:
10th - 12th Grade Students and Families
Did you know that MHS distributes weekend food bags to students in need every Friday? We are so grateful for our partnership with the MCS Family Resource Center who helps make programs like this possible. Do you know a child who could benefit from this service? Reach out to his/her school counselor for details.
10th and 11th Grade Students
In January, MHS will formally start the registration process for the 2026-27 school year, and your student will input his/her course requests into SchooLinks.
To prepare for that, students - revisit, explore, or finish your YouScience assessments. The data from your YouScience profile will help refine your career search and assist you in making wise, informed decisions about your high school elective course selection during your junior and senior year.
For more information about YouScience, please view this. In you are unable to access your account from ClassLink, see Mrs. Abernathy.
11th Grade Students
Rachel Minzyk, 11th grader school counselor, will start conducting individual meetings with every student in the Class of 2027 from November 2025 through March of 2026. These meetings will review graduation progression, will discuss course planning for the 26-27 school year and will address post secondary planning.
11thand 12th Grade Students
Please see the attached documentation about a nursing camp at Carson Newman. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, 12/17. For any questions, feel free to contact CN at 423-404-1515.

Rebel Ready Graduate Flash
Hey Rebel Families!
As Maryville High School’s Ready Graduate Coordinator, I’m locked in on helping our students who are skipping the 4-year college scene to chase trades, military, entrepreneurship, or straight-to-work wins. The Ready Graduate Center (RGC) is their command center—drop by and let’s map a future as bold as our red and black!
RGC Power-Up: Level Up Your Path
From mock interviews to trade-school tours, the RGC is where Rebels level up. We connect students to local gigs, skill-building, and real-world plans. Let’s make their post-grad game unstoppable!
Quick Win: Some careers, like drone tech or commercial baking, take just 6-12 months to start earning $45K+!
Helpful Resources
Tennessee Promise Community College: Mandatory meeting for seniors November 20th in school.
- TCAT Knoxville: Hands-on programs in aviation maintenance, culinary, and more at tcatknoxville.edu.
- Handshake: Job board for high school grads at joinhandshake.com.
- Ready Graduate Center: Open for career quizzes, FAFSA help (yes, for trade schools too!), or just a chat.
Dinner Table Sparks
Ignite future-talk with your Rebel:
- “What job would make you jump out of bed excited?”
- “If money wasn’t a thing, what would you do all day?”
- “What’s a skill you’d love to be the best at?”
- “Who’s someone you admire in their career—why?”
- “What’s one thing you want your work to stand for?”
Tip: No pressure—just curiosity. Their answers might surprise you!
Data for Non-4-Year Rebels
The stats back the hustle:
- Trade Gold: Plumbers and EMTs in Tennessee earn $57K-$70K after 1-2 years of training (BLS, 2025).
Growth Alert: Tennessee’s advanced manufacturing & healthcare jobs are rising 13% through 2034.
- Earn While Learning: Apprenticeships in robotics or electrical work start at $21-$28/hr + benefits.

IMPORTANT CHANGE IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICE POLICY
IMPORTANT UPDATE:
School Board Policy now requires cell phones, smart watches, and any portable wireless device that has the capability to provide voice, messaging, or other data communication between two (2) or more parties to be turned off and stored during the school day. This means that from the time students arrive on campus until dismissal, cell phones, smart watches and other devices fitting this definition will not be used at any time during the school day. This includes break, lunch and passing period from one class to another.
Board Policy
Students may possess wireless communication devices so long as such devices are turned off and stored for the entirety of the school day. Such devices include any portable wireless device that has the capability to provide voice, messaging, or other data communication between two (2) or more parties, such as wearable technology, cell phones, laptops, tablets, and gaming devices.
A student may, however, be permitted to utilize a wireless communication device under the following circumstances:
1. In case of emergency;
2. When authorized by a teacher for educational purposes during instructional time;
3. To manage the student’s health, as documented in the student’s individual healthcare plan;
4. When the possession or use is required by the student’s individual education program, 504 plan, or individual learning plan; or
5. When the device is being used by a student with a disability for the operation of assistive technology to increase, maintain, or improve the student’s functional capabilities.
If a student's phone, smartwatch or other wireless devices are collected by a staff member, parents will be contacted to pick up the device from school. They will not be returned to the student.
Check Out Procedures
Check-outs should be held to a minimum and are limited to the following:
Emergency - Decision to be made by the principal or assistant principals.
Prior arrangement - If a written request is received by officials in the student services office prior to the beginning of the school day, the student will be dismissed at the requested time. The checkout note must include the student’s full name, date, time of dismissal, phone number where parent/guardian can be reached for verification, and signature of the parent/guardian.
- The parent/guardian comes to the main entrance office to sign the student out.
Students who become sick during the school day must report to the assistant principal’s office/school nurse before they call home. The assistant principal’s office will assist the student and permit the student to call home. The student will remain in the assistant principal’s office or with the school nurse until he/she receives permission to go home or until he/she is picked up by a parent/guardian.
Students are allowed to check out during third block only for medical or legal purposes, and proper documentation must be provided. Students are not allowed to check out to retrieve items needed for school. Leaving school without permission will result in disciplinary action.
Students checking out of school on an altered schedule day will receive an unexcused absence unless the school is provided the appropriate legal or medical documentation.
