Wow--it was a full week here at Stonegate! I am sure you felt the excitement from the many happenings in our school! The week opened with a presentation from The Earth Rangers. This was a fun and engaging presentation about environmental education.

The PTO hosted a successful book fair! Thank you to everyone who volunteered and purchased items. The Luau Under the Lights was also a hit hosted by our PTO. Thank you to everyone who joined us last night!

Our students celebrated Disability Awareness Week with learning about the Paralympics and raised just over $400 for the Special Olympics! We appreciate the generosity and support you are modeling for our students!

Next week is the calm before the Madness of March continues! For all our college basketball fans, enjoy Selection Sunday--I hope your team gets into the Tourney!

First Grade March Madness: Tournament of Books First Grade March Madness: Tournament of Books

First grade students kicked off their very own March Madness Tournament of Books on March 2nd, bringing the excitement of the basketball tournament into the classroom through reading! The tournament will continue throughout the entire month of March as students listen to great stories and vote for their favorites.

During the tournament, students enjoy having guest readers visit the classroom to read some of the competing books aloud. Our guest readers include staff members and parents who help make each reading a fun and memorable experience.

After hearing the stories, students compare the books and vote for their favorite, just like teams advancing in a basketball tournament bracket. The winning books move on to the next round while students eagerly wait to see which story will make it to the championship!

This exciting activity helps build a love of reading while encouraging students to think about stories, share their opinions, and participate in friendly competition. First graders are having a great time cheering for their favorite books and celebrating reading all month long!

A big thank you to all of our guest readers who are helping make the First Grade Tournament of Books such a special event and all of the families who donated books to the Tournament!

Emotion Management

So far, our students have learned about skills for learning and empathy. Skills for learning help students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task and be assertive when asking for help. When discussing empathy, students learned to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings, how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion. Students will now begin to discuss emotion management during their Steps to Strong in Every Way time. Students will learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as worry or anger. When we are able to recognize and label feelings in oneself and others, we can facilitate problem solving, self-management and social competence much better! Below are the Emotion Management unit home links for each grade level so you can learn more about what your child is learning, why it is important, and activities you can do at home with your child!

ZCS Attendance Reminders ZCS Attendance Reminders

We appreciate your continued partnership in supporting regular school attendance! ZCS and the State encourage students to miss no more than 10 days for the entire school year, as students who miss 10% or more of school are considered chronically absent. ZCS has a notification process that occurs when a student reaches 5, 8, and 10 absences. At the 10th absence, Mrs. Largent or Mrs. Drake will reach out by phone to connect with families.

Please continue to keep students home when they are ill, provide any medical documentation you are able for illnesses or appointments, and communicate absences through the attendance line or by emailing stonegateoffice@zcs.k12.in.us . We also encourage families to avoid scheduling planned trips when school is in session whenever possible. Our goal is to work together to ensure students are present, healthy, and ready to learn—thank you for partnering with us!

During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteers website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years.

To apply for a full background check or to learn more about volunteering, please visit the Volunteer page on the ZCS website (https://zcs.edlioschool.com/apps/pages/volunteers). Thank you!
