WCPS inspires
FROM HOMELESS STUDENT TO INSPIRING EDUCATOR: Alyssa Miller

There are nearly 700 students across Washington County Public Schools who are experiencing homelessness. This factor touches every single one of our 46 schools and programs.
Alyssa Miller was a student experiencing homelessness at Boonsboro High School and was on track to fall short of graduating with her class. But that pathway changed when she was connected to an opportunity as a reading tutor apprentice. Hear how she discovered her passion, exceeded expectations, and is now giving back to some of our community's youngest learners in the classroom.

Pillar 3: College and Career Readiness
- By serving as a Reading Tutor Apprentice, Alyssa gained classroom experience in high school, better preparing her for the workforce and growing her aspirations to become an educator.
Pillar 4: More Resources for Our Students to be Successful
- Alyssa was supported with the appropriate resources to make her apprenticeship a reality.
- As a kindergarten paraprofessional, Alyssa is now a necessary support system for students who are building their educational foundation.
In addition to serving students as a paraprofessional, Alyssa is also pursuing credits towards her teaching degree at Hagerstown Community College.
