Week 6 — Parents Are Advocates, Not Rescuers
One of the most important steps toward independence is learning to speak up appropriately.
Parents should absolutely advocate for their children when something significant or concerning occurs. At the same time, there is an important difference between advocating for a child and rescuing a child from every uncomfortable situation.
As children grow, they need to learn how to communicate with teachers, solve peer problems, ask questions, clarify misunderstandings, and appropriately express concerns. When an adult consistently speaks for a child, contacts others on the child's behalf, or immediately intervenes in minor conflicts, the child may have fewer opportunities to develop those skills.
A helpful question before contacting the school is:
“Is my child unable to handle this situation, or is my child uncomfortable handling this situation?”
Sometimes children need adult intervention. Other times, they need encouragement and coaching to handle the situation themselves.
Try this at home: Before making a phone call or sending an email to solve your child's problem, ask your child, “What have you done to try to solve this yourself?”
