Principal Corner

Hello AES families,

The Cooks and Books event is almost here! You should be receiving an email from your child's teacher looking for volunteers to help this coming week in the classroom to prepare the recipe their classroom has for the event. Please be on the lookout for that email.

If you have not had a change to submit your RSVP form to the Cooks and Books event, please do so as soon as possible so we know how many people will be coming.

We are preparing for the Title I sponsored Community Engagement Night Cooks and Books on Wednesday, January 24th, 5:30 - 7:00. Where we will share a meal together that the students cook. All of the recipes will be based on the books they are reading together in class. In the newsletter below you will find a link to the RSVP form. Please let us know if you are coming to the event.

Hillside Pizza Fundraiser is well underway. Students need to turn in all forms by January 22nd. Sell those pizzas!

Dinner and a movie? That sounds great! Come to the Conval High School, on January 30th, to celebrate learning differences. Our students at AES have been helping to prepare for the event by making placemats for the dinner. This event is free and open to all of the surrounding communities. There is a flyer below containing all of the event details.

Students are already buzzing with excitement about Crazy 8s beginning. The PTO will be sponsoring this 8 week program, Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30, beginning February 21st. This club is free! All students K-4 are welcome to attend free of charge. There will be two separate multi-age groups with different activities each week, grades K-2 and 3-4. Sign-up sheets are attached to this newsletter below and will be sent home in hard copy from classroom teachers. Please sign and return the forms as soon as possible so we know how many groups of students will need to prepare.

Winter Benchmark Assessments have begun. Students will be taking NWEA in grades 1-4 and AIMsWeb assessment in grades K-4 in accordance with the district assessment schedule. The results of the assessments will be shared out with families after the assessment window closes and report cards are posted. If you have questions, please contact me directly.

Be well,

Beth

Kindergarten Kindergarten

This week, both Kindergarten classes learned a little bit about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he worked to make our world a more fair and kind place. We read a short book and watched a Sesame Street episode that focused on how Dr. King lived to spread fairness, kindness and peace. Each kindergarten student made a leaf for our Peace Tree that shows one thing they can do to be kind, fair or friendly. Some of their ideas were “help someone pick up if they make a mess, invite others to play, share soccer balls with friends at recess, give someone a hug if they’re hurt, and say hi to everyone.” What a kind, friendly group of Kindergarteners we have!

Grade 1 and Library Grade 1 and Library

In Mrs. DiFolco’s and Mrs. Sullivan's classes, we have been learning about informative writing and non - fiction literature.

Our time during library has been learning about Foxes and Moose! Each student has begun to make their own diorama from a shoe box to apply our new knowledge about their habitats.

They have been using their creativity during such a fun project.

We can't wait to share them with you when they are complete.

Grade 2 Grade 2

We have had a fun week in second grade! Our class began learning about two-dimensional shapes and how we can describe their attributes. We also have continued learning about the three states of matter through an experiment called Dancing Raisins. Great job, second grade!

Grade 4 Grade 4

Miss Gilbert’s 4th grade class met their class eagle goal and earned a fort buiding day today! The 4th graders earned class eagles by showing our eagle values of respect, honesty, kindness, cooperation and grit. Nice job 4th graders!

Note from Ms Gregg, School Counselor

Happy New Year! Recent kindergarten, first grade, second grade and third grade classroom counseling lessons have focused on empathy and kindness. Fourth graders have been learning about the importance of understanding different points of view and the fact that different people have different perspectives. Lessons generally begin with a brief “brain builder” activity designed to help students strengthen their skills of observation, focusing, remembering, following directions, and waiting/patience.
