May 2025 News
Message from Principal Hakala
Greetings, Blue Jay families!
This month, we especially want to shout out to all of our amazing teachers! They work so hard to look after our kiddos in the classroom and outside. Afterschool program, Girls on the Run, field trips, Kids in the Kitchen, partnership with OSU.
The weather is getting warming and families are starting to talk about summer. Please remind students, that they still have a lot of learning that is to happen before summer starts. It is important that students are working and trying their hardest in school to learn as much as possible!
This month at school we are giving students green Blue Jay Bucks when they are showing determination and perseverance. You can help us at home by reinforcing how important it is to keep trying even when something is hard!
We want to thank everyone for their patience and kindness in the pickup line. We do try to get students out as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Let's have a great month!
Don Hakala, Principal

If you have a child who is turning 5 on or before Sept. 1, they will be eligible to enroll in kindergarten! ParentVue is now open to get them registered. It helps us so much to know how many students to expect. You will be asked for several documents: their birth certificate (we'd take the footprint record), immunizations and your proof of address (license + utility bill would work great). You can choose to take a picture of the docs and upload or check the box for "hand deliver" and drop them off.
We hope you will join us on Thursday, May 15, at 5:30 for our Kinder Welcome Night. You'll be able to meet the teachers, learn what kindergarten will be like, get information about the fabulous KITS program and SafetyTown, and more. Spanish translation will be available.
Technically, you don't need to register until we get closer to school, but there are many advantages to doing it sooner:
1. It will be done and you can cross it off your to-do list!
2. Once registered, you can sign the student up for summer SPARK camp, for the Willamalane OnePass, or the KITS program. To request a OnePass, email summerlearning@springfield.k12.or.us.
3. Remember that the office is closed in the summer, so if you put off registering until after June, there won't be anyone here in the office to help or ask questions of.
Please call if you run into any trouble with registration!
Annual Review Process
Families, it's that time again! Each year, we ask every family to go through the Annual Review process in ParentVue to make sure your contact information and family details are all up-to-date. This helps us plan for incoming students. At this time you can also register any incoming students or let us know that your student will not be returning to Centennial. We also ask that you upload proof of address documentation each year - a current utility bill works great.
Please log in at your earliest convenience and complete the process! Forgot your login info? Give us a call, we can reset it!
We are asking this to be completed by the end of May. We'll be keeping track - the classroom with the highest completion rate will win a class party!
Character Trait of the Month: Determination
Determination means not giving up on achieving your goals even when faced with challenges. It involves staying focused and trying new things. Encouraging determination in children can involve praising effort, helping with solving problems, and showing them examples of perseverance. You can help by talking about determination at home!
PBIS Update: Staying Focused
This month, Centennial students are working at staying focused and on task. When students are on task they are learning more, improving their skills, and building their confidence. Special green bucks are handed out to students who are focused on their tasks. These bucks are worth 10 cents each at the student store and can help the class “purchase” a group reward. It's been working very well!
Reading Intervention News by Mrs. Sandoval
If you didn’t have a chance to read last month’s newsletter, Centennial Elementary continues to provide additional reading support to 20% of our students!
One activity our students work on is encoding. Encoding is hearing the sounds in a word and writing the letter/s that make that sound. We want students to stretch out each word to hear every sound!
Meet two wonderful 3rd grade students who have been working on this! They proudly show off their Writing Notebooks! Christian is learning that sometimes 2 letters make 1 sound (like ch, sh, th). Eisley is working so hard on continuing that same learning. Our third grade group cheered them on!
April Super Students

OBOB (Oregon Battle of the Books)
Congratulations to The Sassy Croissant Readers for making it to the Sweet 16 in the OBOB regional tournament! Students who will be in grades 3–5 can start preparing for next year by checking out the book list on the state's OBOB website at www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org
Centennial's Winning Team
The Sassy Croissant Readers - Olivia, Bryanna, Molina, Aleena and Sophie - fought off some very courageous teams to take the Centennial title!
Getting 2nd Grade Excited
Ms. Hodgin came up with a great idea to get our second-graders excited about OBOB next year - the "Battle of the Seuss" !
Attendance Matters!
Families, we understand that children get sick and we so appreciate it when you call to tell us they won't be in. We also understand that things often happen in our busy lives that cause us to be late.
But because showing up for school has such a huge impact on a student’s academic success, we want you to know that we are going to be increasing our efforts to reach out to families with information about attendance. You may be receiving more calls or other notifications than usual.

Kids in Transition to School: The transition to kindergarten is big, but it doesn’t have to be scary! Prepare your family for this change and enroll in KITS – Kids In Transition to School! KITS is offered for free in multiple Lane County school districts, and involves a school readiness group for kids and a workshop for parents/caregivers. Once your kindergartener is enrolled at Centennial, they will be eligible to sign up for KITS. Learn more about KITS and register today!
Safety Town: Great summer program for incoming kinders! It fills up - learn more and apply soon!
Willamalane 1Pass: Sign up now through April 30 to enter the free lottery. You will need your student's ID number (which is the same as their lunch number).
Communicating with Us
Just a reminder that if you are not connected with your child's teacher(s) via the SeeSaw app, we encourage you to do so! SeeSaw is a great way to connect with teachers. Please reach out to your teacher or to Ms Deb in our office for help getting connected!

- You can always get blue bags from the school office. This is an easy way to support the PTO through donations of bottles and cans. Just bring the bag to the Springfield Bottle Drop Redemption Center, scan the PTO bar code, and toss your bag.
