Celebrating Outstanding Haslett Band Students
Easton Vessell (8th Grade, Tuba), Rocco Clarizio (9th Grade, Percussion) and Spencer Locke (12th Grade, Tuba) were selected and performed with the All State Band during the Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids! These outstanding musicians earned their spots among the best in Michigan, showcasing their hard work, dedication, and passion for music. Congratulations Easton, Rocco and Spencer!
Middle School Robotics Classroom enjoys new VEX IQ Robots
Thanks to a generous grant from the Foundation for Haslett Schools, Joe Bush, teacher of the growing middle school robotics program, has purchased five VEX IQ robots that will benefit the Haslett Middle School students for years to come. These robots will be used by students in various grades, including our 6th and 7th grade exploratory classes, providing hands-on learning experiences in key robotics concepts such as mechanical advantage, drivetrains, gear ratios, and programming. We are grateful to the Foundation for their support of this valuable educational opportunity.
VEX IQ robots offer a multitude of educational opportunities for teachers and students alike. These versatile robotics kits can be used to teach a wide range of STEM concepts, from basic engineering and programming to more advanced topics such as autonomous navigation and machine learning.
Students build, tinker, and iterate designs every day. Mr. Bush enjoys observing students being so immersed in their learning. Students can assume their engineering roles and collaborate to problem-solve their way through challenges. Whether constructing robots for freeze tag or BattleBots, the class offers a unique platform for student engagement and success. Most importantly, robotics allows students to discover skills and abilities they were not aware they possessed.
Curriculum Integration and Project-Based Learning
Science: Explore physics concepts like force, motion, and energy through robot design and experimentation.
Technology: Delve into programming, electronics, and mechanical systems while building and coding robots.
Engineering: Engage in the engineering design process, from brainstorming and prototyping to testing and iterating.
Mathematics: Apply math skills to calculate gear ratios, measure distances, and analyze data from robot performance.
Skill Development
Problem-Solving: Students learn to identify problems, develop solutions, and test their ideas through hands-on robotics challenges.
Critical Thinking: Building and programming robots requires students to think critically and analyze information to make informed decisions.
Creativity: Students can express their creativity by designing unique robots and developing innovative solutions to challenges.
Collaboration: Working in teams to build and program robots fosters collaboration and communication skills.
Competitions and Challenges
VEX IQ Robotics Competition: Participate in local, regional, and national competitions where students can showcase their skills and compete against other teams.
Classroom Challenges: Create classroom challenges that encourage students to apply their knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems.
