It's been a year of NEW!

From online interactive menus to a new Child Nutrition logo, we have had a LOT of new this year. We are excited to better keep you informed and show you who is serving your kids and what is cooking in our kitchens. This monthly newsletter is just the thing to communicate SFSD Child Nutrition happenings and sneak peeks of what's yet to come!

CN Updates

Due to the ongoing supply chain issues, we expect menu changes throughout the rest of the school year. We want you to know that we are intentionally sourcing food products and supplies to ensure ample food for your children at both breakfast and lunch. We will continue to provide healthy, safe, and full meals for your children each day. If you have questions about the menu, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team at 605-367-7925.

Please know that we are taking the good with the challenging. Due to availability, we are trialing new menu items, different food brands, and really promoting our fresh fruits and vegetables. We are collecting feedback, monitoring waste, and using this information to continuously improve our meal service.

RDN Recommendation: Make your primary beverage plain water!

We are lucky enough to have two dietitians working for your kids here in the Sioux Falls School District. Each month we would like to share a little tip to encourage healthy habits for your whole family! Today we are emphasizing water intake! Adequate hydration often falls lax this time of the year. It's easy to forget to hydrate when you aren't hot and sweaty.

How much water do I really need?

Adults should consume no less than 64 oz of plain water each day, more if they are active.

Children's needs vary based on age, size, and activity. To make sure that they are getting enough, make sure they have fresh water available throughout the day. Water should be their primary beverage, milk can be offered as a snack compliment -or- with meals. Juice, pop, and other sugar-sweetened beverages are treats only. Not a daily option.

Why?

Water is the medium of countless bodily reactions and makes up approximately 60% of the human body. Things tend to go wrong when we aren't getting enough water including dry skin, constipation, headaches, tiredness, and muscle cramps.

Disclaimer: These recommendations are made for the average person and do not take into account any personalized needs that you may have. Please always follow your care team's recommendations first and foremost as they are familiar with your specific health history.
