A Note from the Principal

Forest Hills Families,

The countdown to Spring Break is on! I know many of us are looking forward to the warm sunny weather ahead!

Registration for the 2025-2026 school year is now open. By now, you should have received a snapcode via email to register your current student. It is imperative that all current students register for the 2025-2026 school year as we are expecting to be at full capacity! Forest Hills is such an amazing school that we fill up every year!

If I can ever be of assistance to you, please call, email, or stop by! GO FALCONS!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

A must read for ALL parents, grandparents, & educators!

Forest Hills Families,

Over the last decade, I have become passionate about researching and fighting the negative effects of screentime on children. There is now over a decade's worth of research with supporting evidence that screentime is not only harmful to our children, but has actually rewired children's brains. The book, The Anxious Generation, does a phenomenal job of providing this research along with easy solutions. I would challenge each of you to read or listen to the book! This website also has excellent information and resources. The gist of the book is that we have rewired childhood and created an epidemic of mental illness (anxiety, depression, ADHD, suicide, etc). The author argues that the mass migration into the virtual world has disrupted social and neurological development.

So what can we as parents and educators do? We must fight fiercely and together to reclaim childhood for our kids with 3 easy steps. It's not too late!

1. Roll back the phone-based childhood.

Delay children's access to smart phones until high school and social media platforms until age 16.

2. Restore the play-based childhood.

Give children and adolescents more opportunities for independence, free play, and responsibility.

3. Reclaim life in the real world.

Replace screen time with real-world experiences involving friends and independent activity, so that limits on devices don’t feel like deprivation but the opening up of a world of opportunities.

As a mom, I can empathize with each of you. Parenting in the age of technology is TOUGH! My kids are typical kids and ask for devices! It is so easy to become trapped in the cycle of excessive screentime, but we MUST guard our children and also hold ourselves accountable as parents. I would challenge each of you to begin monitoring your personal device usage, specifically the time you spend on a screen in front of your children. Instead of scrolling through social media, let's try to commit to engaging our families in activities like board games, building legos, or going outside for a walk.

As you can see, this is a passion of mine, and I want to help families who may be struggling with this issue. If you would like to talk more with me about screentime and ways to help your child, please stop by my office, call or email anytime!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fowler, Principal

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is so excited about the fun learning we have planned for March! We have been learning about Dr. Seuss and all the wonderful books he wrote. This has been perfect timing for producing rhyming words in reading class. Students have been learning to write poems and create their own sentences in writing. We will continue learning more letter names and sounds, and reading words that contain those letters. At this point in the school year, K students should be reading to parents more. Please have your child practice reading every day. In math we are learning about missing addends within 10, subtracting within 10 & solving adding and subtracting word problems within 10. Our next Unit study in Reading will be Science related called "Ready, Set, Grow." So we will learn a lot about how plants and animals live & grow!

1st Grade

Happy March! First graders have had a wonderful time learning about communities around our world and expanding our knowledge on base ten. We are looking forward to our spring field trip and musical! Our students will travel to Burritt on the Mountain in Huntsville, Alabama where they will participate in hands on opportunities to learn about play, work, and everyday life in our area over 100 years ago. Our musical is titled "Music Matters" and students are so excited to perform for friends and family. We look forward to learning about plants and their life cycles in our upcoming reading unit and to learn more about time, money, and geometry in math. While this is a busy time for first grade, we are excited to continue pouring into our students and grow together. Go Falcons!

2nd Grade

Second graders are so excited to explore Bear Creek for our field trip this year. Permission forms were sent home with each child this week. We are looking forward to a wonderful adventure.

We are finishing up our unit in math on measurement. The students have loved learning about many different real world scenarios, and how we use measurement in our day to day lives.

In our reading unit, we are reading a couple of different stories about bees. We are having a REAL beekeeper come to visit us on Monday to teach us all about bees. This will be a wonderful experience for your child.

3rd Grade

In Math, students have just finished learning about fractions. We will be discussing time, liquid volume, and mass in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to keep practicing those multiplication facts! The Fluency Bee is quickly approaching!

In Reading, we will be closing out Unit 4, which was all about Animals and Their Habitats. We are looking forward to starting Unit 5, Government at Work. Please have your child read their fluency passage three times a week.

On Friday, March 7th, we will be participating in Read Across America!! We will have guest readers, and students are allowed to dress as their favorite book character for the parade!

We have a lot of important skills to learn before the ACAP test in April. It is very important that your child is at school every day unless they are sick. Thank you for your continued support at home.

4th Grade

We are continuing our study on animal and plant adaptations. During each lesson, we will learn about new adaptations and how they work to keep plants and animals protected. This is a great opportunity to practice researching at home. Students can search for their favorite plants or animals, and learn what adaptations make them unique and keep them safe.

In Math, students have been hard at work learning about decimals to the tenths and hundredths place. You can reinforce this learning at home by connecting it to money or stats in sports. Soon, we will begin our Geometry unit learning about types of angles and lines. This opens up a world of conversations with your child about the lines and angles they see around the house, out a car window, or as you are out in the community.

5th Grade

In math we are beginning our unit on geometry and classifying shapes into a hierarchy. We have lots of hands-on activities to help students make connections and classify shapes based on attributes. In ELA we are working hard to prepare for ACAP. We've been sharpening our writing skills, studying morphological structure, and working to increase our reading fluency. Our 3rd nine weeks ELA Benchmark will be March 12th. In science, we are finishing our parachute project by dropping them from a scissor lift and bucket truck! Adults will drop the parachutes while students will time the fall of their parachute with a stopwatch. The time of the fall will determine the effectiveness of our parachute designs. We will also begin our AMSTI unit on Matter and Interactions this month.
