Region 10 Career and Technical Education Updates

DiscoveR10 CTERegion 10 Career and Technical Education Updates

What We Have Learned...

Last week a number of individuals tied to CTE found themselves in Marble Falls at the CTAT Mid-Winter Conference. The event was filled with information and updates to continue our education as educators. The sessions were packed, the rain didn't dampen any spirits, and the collaboration between peers was a sight to behold. I know that a lot of learning took place, but let me tell you what I learned. First, everyone there was finding a way to be better and do better for their students. How do we better serve our special populations students? How do we increase our ability to offer Industry Based Certifications? Etc. Secondly, I learned that the sense of community within the CTE world is strong. The willingness to share methods, strategies, successes, and resources with each other to improve outcomes for all students was everywhere I looked. I learned that my belief in the power of CTE is well supported. I learned that there are schools innovating and providing amazing real-world experiences. We all learned that the CLNA is well within our abilities and should not be overwhelming. And, while those that attended CTAT learned a lot, we hope that you ALL have learned that we here at Region 10 are always here to help and support you in your endeavors. If you ever feel like sharing something you have learned within your LEA, a success story, a handy method to accomplish a goal, valuable data, or anything you feel would be helpful to others, please reach out and let us highlight what you are doing within our newsletter!

2019 Square One Education Network Innovative Vehicle Design (IVD) Competition

Autonomous Innovative Vehicle Design Challenge

Square One Education Network (Square One) is a 501c3 Non-profit STEM-focused educational organization. Square One serves K-12 teachers and students with hands on, project-based learning opportunities that inspire and engage students toward college and career pathways in technical fields. We’ve been inspiring students and teachers for over 25 years. We have a STEM grant opportunity for you.

We are partnering with the Intelligent Transportation Society of America to offer our Autonomous Innovative Vehicle Design program to several states across the country. As part of this program, students will re-engineer an electric toddler jeep to function as an autonomous vehicle. Competition challenges include collision avoidance, parallel parking, and more.

Here is a link to a flyer filled with information on the project's purpose and value. The link to register will also provide a wealth of information. Additionally, here's a video link that highlights our STEM Competitions! You can also learn more about Square One on our website (www.squareonenetwork.org) or on Facebook (www.facebook.com/S1Nation)

Please share this information with teachers that you think might be interested - science, tech, engineering, math, your FIRST Robotics coach, etc. Often, a FIRST team will use this project to allow more students to have a hands on experience!

Scholarship Opportunity - Society of Petroleum Engineers

The Fort Worth Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is reaching out to key leaders in education who may teach or know students from the North Texas area concerning a unique scholarship opportunity for their students.

In Texas, we hold 25% of the nation's natural gas reserves and almost 30% of the total U.S. refining capacity. The energy business in Texas is, to say the least, booming. The industry needs new people to manage these precious resources and to find new and better ways to use them.

To encourage the pursuit of careers in the Oil and Gas Industry, we are excited to offer scholarships for students that are either entering their freshman year of college or are an undergraduate student already in college. Scholarships of up to $3,000 per year are awarded annually and (once awarded) may be renewed through the recipient's senior year in college (up to $12,000 in total).

We need help now in getting the word out to students who may have an interest in this type of career. In general these students will have an above average academic record and be very strong in STEM courses.

For more information, or to apply for a scholarship, please visit our website at http://ftworth.spe.org/scholarships. Deadline for all applications is April 15th, 2020.
