LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Yesterday, our second Early Release Wednesday, was our first “cross-age buddies” experience for students schoolwide followed by our second All School Assembly. These two special events, cross-age buddies and All School Assemblies, will take place every Early Release Wednesday.
Students were so excited to meet their older or younger buddies Wednesday! Students were abuzz about it during breakfast and adorable in action. Kindergarten classes are paired with 3rd grade classes, 1st grade with 4th, 2nd with 5th. Ask your child who their cross age buddy is, and what they learned about them! Here’s a letter for families that explains the program (same one you may have received from your child’s teacher). Teachers have been intentionally helping students plan and prepare to listen to and learn about each other which built anticipation and led to so many meaningful connections: I asked a 2nd grader what she’d been talking about with her buddy and she knew his favorite color, food and what he likes to do for fun. 5th grade teachers had their students prepare a slide to share information with their buddies. One of our 3rd grade teachers who is currently hosting an exchange student from Spain, set up the experience as 3rd graders “hosting” their kindergarten buddies when they arrived. On Early Release Wednesdays, specialists visit classrooms and support students and one of them who was in that 3rd grade class said it felt like every 3rd grader truly graciously welcomed and “hosted” their kindergarten buddy.
Our schoolwide assembly focus was to showcase our new “Honoring Native Peoples” mural and learn its purpose: to honor native people, their tribes, and the land on which our school was built. Here are the slides for you to see what students saw, only you have to imagine the content is being presented by five amazing 5th graders who presented the slides on stage: each read a part of the script you see on slide 5. (Thank you to our art specialist, Ms. Meyer, who prepared these slides for us!). Malcolm Pascua-O’Neill, our Plains Tribe Indigenous Artist, was able to come to our assembly and talk with students! He shared such a beautiful message with our students: “Be true to yourself, proud of who you are and where you came from. It’s better to stand out, than to fit in.” He taught that his identity as native or indigenous means being proud of who you are and where you come from. “Don’t be afraid to represent who you are as a person.”
We’ve noticed a dip in attendance on Early Release Wednesdays and know childcare is challenging for some of our families (YMCA does provide care from dismissal on, and please reach out if you have special circumstances we might be able to try to support.). Early Release Wednesdays are an important day to be present because (every day is!) and also, we include these three community-building elements into our day (Cross-age buddies, Schoolwide assemblies, and our specialists joining classes to build relationships with students and support their academic learning.)
Two important special requests related to funding: 1. For our school specifically: Please contribute to our Dolphin Drive! Every dollar in any increment helps our PTA support programs for our students and community such as our awesome Fall Festival coming up tomorrow night! And for PPS schools comprehensively: Medicaid Administrative Claiming, which, through your signature of consent, brings revenue to the district for administrative services our staff already provide to students with IEPs at our school. Here is an explanatory letter and Notice & Consent to Bill Medicaid. The ask is for every family to read and sign the consent form even if to say “My child does not qualify” or “No” because PPS does not know which of our GenEd students are Medicaid-enrolled and cannot claim reimbursement until a signed affirmative Consent is in place. Thank you!
Warmly,
Lisa

OBOB Team Registration Opens Tomorrow, Oct 24
Oregon Battle of the Books is a friendly reading comprehension trivia competition for grades 3-5. Create your own team of 2-5 players, or just sign up and we will help you form a team! Teams will read the 16 books from the 2025-26 OBOB list.
Read as much as you can from the official list of 16 awesome titles from various genres, or divide up the books between yourself and your teammates and work together to read the list (for instance, each child on a team of four reads four of the books)!
Teams require a parent/guardian coach. Choose a team name. Make a team logo. You can even make team t-shirts if you like! Practice recall and memorization, then come battle it out in a lively and encouraging Q&A trivia competition in the library! Pool Play will be held during school hours for our 2025-26 season.
Teams will be matched against each other and answer specific trivia questions about the books. The tournament will begin in January, with battles being held during school hours. Prior to this, we will have optional practice battles and optional after school open library time. Our final championship battles will be scheduled for late February, after school, well in advance. All finalized dates TBD.
How do I get on a team? Find other Arleta students in 3rd-5th grade that are interested in participating and sign up as a team. Registration forms came home with Friday Folders last week.
● If you want to participate but aren’t sure who you can be on a team with, tell your parents, your teacher or our librarian, and they will help you.
● Registration will begin October 24th. Registration will run for a month and will officially close November 30th. It can take time to commit and form teams so get started right away!
● Return your registration form to your teacher or to the librarian.
Find the official list of titles and other resources at: www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org
Below is a full list of the OBOB books for Grades 3-5 2025-26. Click on the links (or the images below) to borrow them from Multnomah County Library, or you can order them from Powells Bookstore (OBOB books are 20% off at Powell's)!
FREE BREAKFAST FOR ALL STUDENTS
We have breakfast available for all Arleta students at no cost. Please join us!
The doors open at 7:45 and students eat in the cafeteria. Students are dismissed to class at 7:58 in order to be ready to learn at 8:00. Kindergarteners are walked to class by a staff member.
Remember the cafeteria is supervised at 7:45 but no other areas on campus are. If you drop your student off for breakfast please make sure they head directly to the cafeteria.
THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY!
A huge thank you to everyone who donated and attended The Costume & Athletic Gear Exchange last Friday! The sun peeked out just in time for the community to browse the racks for free gear. We also want to express our gratitude to our fantastic volunteer team for setting everything up and packing it away – Arleta truly rocks!
Thank you, Mr. Cooke and Miss Angie, for playing music at the picnic tables before school began on Monday.
Feeling grateful for the Arleta community and the joy it brings!
HELP FUND SCHOOLING THROUGH MEDICAID
School Districts can receive money from Medicaid to help pay for important services like speech, occupational therapy, and counseling provided at school. The Medicaid money helps school districts to keep these resources available for students with disabilities or behavioral health needs without changing the services they receive. This helps PPS get money back from the government for the work our staff is already doing. Because of the current budget situation, this funding is more important than ever. Click here to learn more!
BEAT THE BELL
Last week, Arleta had a nearly 94% attendence rate (slightly down from 95% the week before) and 119 tardies (more than the 103 tardies the week before).
Looking for some tips to help you get out of the door on time? Check back here each week for ideas.
This week's tips:
- Avoid electronics entirely for a more restful evening and a distraction-free morning.
- Don’t try to do “one more thing”; you’ve done enough!
- Talk about your child’s classroom routine: what happens first thing, how happy the teacher will be to see them.
COME GET WHAT YOU'RE MISSING AT THE LOST AND FOUND
The lost and found racks are getting full! Please take a moment to check the racks for any missing items belonging to your student. Feel free to stop by anytime during office hours, from 7:30am -3:30pm.
VOLUNTEER AND DONATION OPPORTUNITIES SPOTLIGHT
VOLUNTEER AT THE FALL FESTIVAL
The Fall Festival is October 24th. We need volunteers to help with setup, running stations, and cleanup.
Without enough volunteers, we will have to cancel the festival.
We have had eighteen people sign up to volunteer, but there are not enough peoplee to set up the party, and one person to clean up after it's over. That will not work. It truly takes a village to make these fun events happen and give our kids these important memories, and we hope that we can count on you to help make it happen for us all.
We need volunteers to:
- help set up the decorations and tables
- take half hour shifts selling concessions,
- pass out goody bags, and
- help clean up at the end of the night.

NEWBERY BOOK OF THE WEEK
FREEWATER, BY AMINA LUGMAN-DAWSON - 2023 NEWBERY AWARD WINNER
After an entire young life of enslavement, twelve-year-old Homer escapes Southerland Plantation with his little sister Ada, leaving his beloved mother behind. Much as he adores her and fears for her life, Homer knows there’s no turning back, not with the overseer on their trail. Through tangled vines, secret doorways, and over a sky bridge, the two find a secret community called Freewater, deep in the recesses of the swamp.
In this new, free society made up of escaped slaves and some born-free children, Homer cautiously embraces a set of spirited friends, almost forgetting where he came from. But when he learns of a threat that could destroy Freewater, he hatches a plan to return to Southerland plantation, overcome his own cautious nature, and free his mother from enslavement. Loosely based on a little-mined but important piece of history, this is an inspiring and deeply empowering story of survival, love, and courage.

Poetry Corner
Each week we feature a poem from literature that you can share with your kids. Poems are quick ways to practice literacy and work like little packages of thoughts and feelings that explore the world in new ways. This week's poem is a childhood classic!
Jabberwocky
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogroves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Bewave the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood a while in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tugley wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms my beamish boy!
Oh frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy!
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogroves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

TODAY - PAT & PIRC ICE RESPONSE NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORK TRAINING - OCT 23

In coordination with regional and statewide groups like PIRC (Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition).
We know the most resilient communities are those with the strongest relationships. And that our neighborhoods thrive when we know each other and our stories, when we trust each other and care for one another. When we don't allow someone on the other side of the country to tell our story for us. And right now, we need our neighbors more than ever.
Open to the public:
- Monday: 10/13/2025 at Harrison Park Middle School; 5-7pm
- Friday: 10/17/2025 at Ockley Green Middle School; 5-7pm
