Video Message from Principal and Assistant Principal

April 6, 2023

MCAS Next Week

Next week begins our official MCAS test administration. Our students will be taking the English Language Arts Reading Comprehension MCAS which consists of two separate days of testing. The testing days for 4th grade are Monday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 11. 3rd grade test days are Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13. This week, we met with our students to send the message that, while MCAS is important for our staff to learn about our teaching, it isn’t tied to student grades or graduation to the next year. We find it important to limit stress when striking this balance. To assist on test days, please make sure your child is well rested and that they have eaten a solid breakfast. Send in a healthy snack so that your child won’t be overly hungry before they go to their scheduled lunch. Make sure your child is wearing comfortable clothing and is free from any items that could be distracting. While we don’t allow cell phones at the elementary level, many students have watches that can connect to the internet and take photos. We ask that these devices stay home on test days. It is extremely important that students are present and on time. The testing sessions begin early in the school day and we want to make sure everyone is settled in before starting the test. Thank you as always, for your continued support and partnership.

Dynamite Diners March Winner!

Congratulations to our 2nd graders who earned the most marbles during lunchtime! On to April...who will be the winner of April's Dynamite Diners??!! It's anyone's guess!

Placement Process Input

Our placement process for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year is beginning and will take place over several weeks. This process is truly a team effort that involves input from school personnel and student data gathered over time. We put great care into the decisions that are made. All information is reviewed by the present grade level teachers, reading specialists, special education teachers, guidance counselor, principal and other appropriate personnel so that we can be confident that classroom make ups are conducive to learning.

When creating classrooms, it is important that we are mindful to the needs of our students across grade levels. Individual classes need to strike the delicate balance between overall range of abilities, learning styles, special needs, conduct and appropriate combinations of students. Final lists are reviewed very carefully to ensure we have used our collective professional judgment to place each child appropriately in a well-balanced class. Our goal at Byam is to provide a learning environment that meets the needs of the whole child and placement is a key factor in realizing this goal. Your input in the process is gladly accepted. If you feel that there is additional information of which we should be aware in placing your child for next year, please inform me by email (with the title 2031 placement in the subject line), by Tuesday, May 11, 2021. Please keep in mind that we are unable to honor requests for individual teachers. Letters containing such requests will be returned to you.

Thank you for your involvement and continued partnership in your child's education at Byam.

Many responsible students can also help with parent supervision! In addition to event volunteers, here are a few larger roles we are looking to fill. We will teach you the ropes and "ease" you in.
