What We've Learned What We've Learned

Reflecting on 25-26

We ended the year with our students in the gym, kicking off a summer reading challenge with the Seattle Seahawks! It was our third visit from a local team (thank you, Storm and Mariners!), and part of our initiative to build a deep sense of a belonging for all students at Broadview. We want all students to feel known and connected to their school community, and our schoolwide assemblies are one of the many ways we work to fulfill this vision.

Were you to walk through any PreK-8 classrooms throughout the year, you might have been struck by the similarities from room to room. You would have noticed a clear focus on academic vocabulary and student discourse, along with graphics, color-coding, and reading routines. These aligned strategies are all connected to our focus on developing language. Over 30% of students at Broadview qualify as multilingual learners--multilingualism is our Broadview superpower, and we see all students as language learners.

Underpinning all our work is a deep commitment to collaboration. Broadview teachers meet weekly in Professional Learning Teams to co-plan, design assessments, analyze data, and reflect. We believe that working together in structured, intentional ways is the best way to provide our students with the teaching and learning they deserve.

This has led to some impressive data, both in our assessments and observations. It’s hard to truly measure an abstract concept like belonging, but the hugs and shared love we observed on the last day of school tells us we’re on to something. Our reading and math data also tells us there are some great things happening at Broadview. When measuring Spring 2025 to Spring 2026 growth on the NWEA MAP assessment, every grade level met or exceeded the average rate of growth in SPS in reading, and 7 of 8 grade levels met or exceeded the average rate of growth in math. A special shout out to our 8th grade readers, who doubled the typical growth rate this year.

Looking to 26-27

Still, we know there is more work to do--our students and families deserve only the best. Over the summer, we will be exploring our data and planning for the 26-27 school year. We expect to continue to focus on belonging, language learning, and collaboration. We also anticipate re-committing to shared routines and expectations at Broadview, and a focus on our new K-5 reading curriculum.

We wish everyone a wonderful summer, and look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood over the next couple months and back in the building in September!

Hiring and moves for 26-27 Hiring and moves for 26-27

Our staff is staying relatively stable next year, and we super excited about our new teachers from this year getting into their second year at Broadview-Thomson; they have already had a great impact in classrooms and beyond.

  • We will be adding a 2nd grade teacher (we are bidding farewell to Grace Fennimore, who has been a rock, since before I got here).
  • We expect to finalize the hiring of a special education teacher in our Extended Resource program very soon.
  • As noted in a recent message, we are welcoming Belgica Alvarez as our new assistant principal. She starts July 1 and will be collaborating with Mr. Bodwitch for a smooth hand-over.
  • Mellissa Marquez is shifting roles and returning to the classroom after many years as our reading interventionist. Megan Lanier is going the other way and will be one of our literacy experts at a very important time.
  • Josh Ruiz is also taking on a mixed role of literacy expert and will also teach in our middle school. Laura Clark will move from 1st and 4th grade next year.
  • Kenda Norris who taught a 4th and 5th grade split class will join our expanded 3rd grade team.

Coast Salish Culture Night Coast Salish Culture Night

On May 28th, Broadview hosted what we believe is the first Coast Salish Culture Night in SPS history. Families, staff, students, and community partners gathered to share knowledge, eat great food, and create art together.

A massive thank you to Gabriel de los Angeles and Grace Fennimore for organizing the evening. Coast Salish Artist Roger Fernandes (S’Klallam) led a collaborative art demonstration, Gabriel de los Angeles led a plant identification and rubbing station, and Broadview Middle School students hosted a salmon table. SPS and community organizations Native American Education and Rise Above joined us, and we enjoyed food from Off the Rez.

Our goal is for Broadview to provide the best possible Native learning experience of any school in Seattle. This was a significant step towards that vision!

Broadview Values: Gratitude Broadview Values: Gratitude

June

At Broadview, all students and staff engage in learning around our Broadview Values.

These values are developed from kindergarten up through 8th grade, and all students have explicit opportunities to both learn about and demonstrate our values through schoolwide assemblies and projects.

Broadview Values

Stewardship: September and October

Kindness: November and December

Collaboration: January and February

Integrity: March and April

Pride: May

Gratitude: June

Pride

On Tuesday, June 9 we held our final Broadview Values assembly focused on GRATITUDE. Our Middle School students led the assembly, and we defined gratitude as noticing, appreciating, and giving thanks for the good things in ourselves and our community.

In the assembly, our students practiced gratitude by co-creating posters for our essential staff who keep our school running- our custodians, kitchen staff, and more.

We wrapped up the year with a shared art project. All Broadview students recieved a wooden paw print to paint. These personalized paw prints will be hung on the fence over the summer to create a student art installation- a beautiful representation of our incredible student community!
