DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT

Celina Schools and Urbana City Schools are taking proactive steps to ensure every student stays on track for graduation through their participation in the Each Child on Track project. Using the Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System (EWIMS), these schools are implementing a comprehensive, evidence-based process to identify and support students who may be at risk of falling behind. The EWIMS approach uses readily available data on attendance, behavior, and course performance to systematically flag students who need additional support and match them with appropriate interventions.

Through this multi-tiered system of support at the high school level, dedicated teams of educators regularly review student data, interpret early warning signs, and coordinate targeted interventions to help students succeed. The process allows schools to catch potential issues early and provide increasingly intensive levels of support based on individual student needs. Rather than waiting until students fall significantly behind, Celina and Urbana are working to create a proactive culture where every child receives the right support at the right time to stay on track for graduation. This data-driven, systematic approach has shown promising results in helping schools reduce chronic absences and course failures while supporting students' path to graduation.

On September 26, SST6 hosted its first Knowledge Building Curriculum Community of Practice, gathering educators from across the region to collaborate and share insights on selecting and implementing curricula that intentionally build knowledge over time, contributing to comprehension. The virtual session fostered a vibrant exchange of experiences and reflections on why a knowledge-building curriculum may be an excellent choice while also addressing implementation considerations, including assessment, pacing, merging necessary foundational decoding skills while building language comprehension, and providing access to rigorous text. Resources to support implementation efforts were shared and examined, so participants could leave with practical tools.

Our community is committed to the following Key Features:

  1. Participant-Driven Topics: The agenda is shaped by the collective interests and needs of our members. We prioritize discussions based on what you want to explore and achieve with your chosen knowledge-building curriculum.

  2. Inclusive Participation: Active engagement from all members is essential. Your insights, experiences, and questions enrich our discussions and contribute to the collective wisdom of the group.

  3. Collaborative Learning: We believe in the power of collaboration. Through sharing best practices, resources, and feedback, we aim to elevate each other's work and create impactful learning experiences for ALL students.

  4. Professional Growth: Whether you're a seasoned educator or new to curriculum leadership, our community offers opportunities for professional development. Gain new perspectives, strategies, and skills that enhance your effectiveness in the classroom leading students or just outside the classroom leading teachers.

  5. Supportive Environment: This is a space where ideas are welcomed, challenges are discussed openly, and successes are celebrated. We encourage constructive feedback and mutual support to foster a positive learning experience for everyone.

If you’re an educator interested in exploring a knowledge-building curriculum, we invite you to join us for our next session on November 21. This is a great opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, gain insights, and connect with other educators throughout the region. We look forward to seeing you there!
