A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy A Message From Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

Who had 90 degrees the first week back from Spring Break and during the NYS ELA test on their bingo card? Wow. Who would have expected that!

Luckily, our A-Team, our incredible custodial staff, made sure that every air conditioner in the building was up and running. Not only that, but after a late night on Monday evening, they had two additional units installed and ready to go for students on Tuesday. We are so grateful for their dedication and care for our school community.

Over the past few weeks, and in the weeks ahead, there are many appreciation days to recognize the people who make schools run. We celebrated Paraprofessional Appreciation Day on April 1. Assistant Principals Week took place during Spring Break, which didn’t quite make sense. This week, we celebrate Administrative Assistants Day on Wednesday, April 22. Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up May 4 through May 8. Earlier this year, we recognized our Education Support Professionals (which is our school aides, parent coordinator, support staff), custodians, guidance counselors, school psychologists, and social workers.

But here’s the thing. At PS 88Q, all of our roles overlap. Everyone supports one another and our job descriptions overlap. Everyone steps in where needed. Everyone contributes to making this school the special place that it is.

So during the week of May 4 through May 8, we celebrate everyone. That includes our staff, our support teams, and our amazing parent volunteers. It truly takes a village, and each and every one of you plays a part in making PS 88Q such a wonderful place for our children.

My hope is that everyone feel's appreciated not just on a designated day or week, but every single day. How lucky we are to be part of this community, at this moment in time.

And if you’re wondering how you can show that appreciation, the answer is simple. Any day, every day. A kind word, a note, a smile. It all matters.

NYCSA

As part of staying connected as a community, we are also working to increase the number of families who are connected to their child’s NYC Schools Account. This is an important tool that allows you to stay informed about your child’s progress, attendance, and important updates.

If you are not yet connected, we are here to help. We are offering in-person support every day during arrival and dismissal. If you are unable to come in, please email me (loshaughnessy@schools.nyc.gov) or Ms. Ivett Perez-Lopez (IPerezlopez@schools.nyc.gov), and we will help get you connected online.

If you are not yet connected, you may also hear from us this week as we reach out to offer support.

🎬 Twenty years. Ninety schools. One vision: inclusion for every autistic student.

Journey to Inclusion — a documentary short that tells the 20-year story of how the Nest Program is transforming inclusive education in New York City.

💡 Founded in partnership with New York University’s Nest Support Project @nestnyu the Nest model brings together students with and without autism in the same classroom — building school communities rooted in shared expertise, empathy, and high expectations for every learner.

📚 Over two decades, Nest has grown to more than 90 schools across all five boroughs, becoming a national model for how public-school systems can make inclusion the expectation.

The film celebrates the educators, families, and students who make this work possible — and reflects NYC Public Schools’ vision to ensure every student thrives in their neighborhood school.

💫 Journey to Inclusion is a celebration of progress — and a call to action. The full documentary will be completed and available in 2026.

Summer Rising Offers

Summer Rising Results

Beginning Tuesday, April 21, families who submitted Summer Rising applications by the March 27 deadline can log in to MySchools.nyc to view their results. Summer Rising seats are limited—please only accept your child’s offer if your child will attend most of their scheduled program. Research shows that the more students show up, the better prepared they'll be to succeed in math and reading in the fall.

The last day to accept or decline Summer Rising offers is Tuesday, May 5—if accepting, make sure you answer any required questions to ensure your child’s seat! Summer Rising placements will not be confirmed unless families accept their offer by the deadline; your child will not be automatically enrolled. Accepting an offer will not affect your child’s chances of getting a waitlist offer at a later date.

Gifted And Talented @ PS 88Q Application for 2026-2027 Gifted And Talented @ PS 88Q Application for 2026-2027

At PS 88Q, our Gifted & Talented (G&T) program for students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 is designed to challenge, inspire, and empower learners to think deeply and creatively. Gifted and Talented education goes beyond traditional instruction by providing opportunities for students to engage in complex thinking, problem-solving, and advanced academic work.

A key component of our G&T program is our strong commitment to Project-Based Learning (PBL). Through this approach, students explore meaningful questions and real-world challenges over time, developing critical thinking, collaboration, and independence. High-quality projects require students to engage in intellectual challenge, connect learning to real-world experiences, collaborate with others, and present their work to authentic audiences . At PS 88Q, this means students are not only learning content, but also building the skills and confidence needed for future success.

Update on School Foods Update on School Foods

Beginning April 13, NYCPS will implement updated federal guidance that expands access to alternative milk options for students participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). This change aligns with recent federal updates under the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025, which revises U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements for fluid milk substitutions under NSLP.

Although the federal update applies specifically to NSLP, NYCPS will make these alternative milk options available at both lunch and breakfast to ensure consistency and support student needs across all meal services. This change promotes equitable access to nutritious meal options by allowing families to request alternative milk without medical documentation.

Process for Requesting Alternative Milk Options:

  • Parents and/or guardians no longer need to provide documentation from a physician to request an alternative milk option. The request for alternative milk can be made by a physician, parent, or legal guardian.
  • Families may now email a completed Alternative Milk form to their principal’s designee (e.g., school nurse or other designated staff member) to request:
    • Lactose free milk; and/or
    • Soymilk (USDA approved)
    • Both options meet USDA nutrition standards for fluid milk.
    • After the form is reviewed, schools should submit the completed form to their OFNS manager; the OFNS manager will coordinate with OFNS and confirm the date the appropriate alternative milk will be available during meal service.
    • Additionally note:

      • Schools must continue offering the required milk options: low-fat milk, non-fat milk, and non-fat chocolate milk.

From Our Chancellor From Our Chancellor

Dear Families and Colleagues,

Last week, during Spring Recess, I reached my 100th day as Chancellor of New York City Public Schools. It has been an incredible journey so far—we announced the launch of our 2-K early care and learning program, released our Guidance on AI, held Chancellor Conversations across the City, and even weathered snowstorms together. I've also completed a whirlwind tour of all 45 of our superintendents' districts, visiting a school in every district and seeing the remarkable work of our schools firsthand.

These visits have profoundly broadened my perspective. I saw NYC Reads and NYC Solves in action in classrooms throughout the City and watched as teachers supported both our youngest and oldest learners. I marveled at our students’ artistic and creative endeavors and the ways they demonstrated readiness for college and careers. Across the City, students are engaging in hands-on, real-world learning: building robots, checking vital signs, coding new software, using aircraft simulators, preparing public speeches, growing organic foods, creating independent films, broadcasting news programs, and more. We are preparing our students to be innovators, problem solvers, and active members of our democracy.

And importantly, on these visits, I heard directly from our school communities about their concerns, thoughts, ideas, and hopes for the future. As I continue to lead our system, I look forward to working with all of you to build upon this vital work. I thank you all for your continued feedback and support on behalf of our students.

In partnership,

Kamar H. Samuels
Chancellor
