Dear Hiteon Community,

It has been an exciting week at Hiteon as we launched our WIN time! WIN stands for โ€œWhat I Need,โ€ and at Hiteon, our focus is reading. Students travel to a group of students who have similar reading needs, giving them the opportunity to learn with students from other classes and teachers. Students LOVE getting this chance! Our launch this week included practicing how to get from one place to another efficiently, learning group expectations, making introductions, and, of course, lots of excitement.

Every three weeks, we will monitor student progress, and every six weeks, we will look at whether studentsโ€™ needs have changed. WIN time is being implemented in every Beaverton School District building this year for students in Kโ€“8th grade.

I also want to give a sincere thank you to all of the parents who are getting their students to school on time. When students are able to begin their day on time and ready to learn, it makes a difference. Speaking of arriving on time, parents who were dropping their children off this morning may have seen me pointing to the โ€œDo Not Turn Leftโ€ sign. That sign is there for a reason, including keeping the carline moving safely and efficiently. Even with my pointing to the sign, we had a few parents choose to turn left. Please, for the sake of safety and a smooth arrival and dismissal, do not turn left when exiting the parking lot onto Brockman. If you are in a hurry, consider dropping your child off on Singletree, behind the school. Your child will get a little exercise walking the one block before school, which is always a good thing!

Lastly, in about two weeks, we will be having parent-teacher conferences. Our goal is to have 100% attendance at Hiteon. Please make sure you sign up for a time, either virtually or in person, if you havenโ€™t done so already. Parent-teacher conferences help strengthen the connection between home and school. They give teachers a chance to share how your child is doing at school and give you an opportunity to share what you know about your child. We look forward to seeing you October 14โ€“15!

Wishing you an AMAZING October!

Janet Maza (Principal) and Krystin Murphy (Assistant Principal)

Have sweatshirts and jackets mysteriously gone missing? Please have your child(ren) take a look at the Lost & Found carts for any missing items (sweatshirts, jackets, hats, water bottles, lunch boxes, etc). Caregivers are also welcome to stop by the school to take a look. The carts are located near the front office by the restrooms and are also brought out behind the school most Fridays at dismissal.

Volunteers make every effort to return items clearly labeled with your studentโ€™s full name to their classrooms. If you havenโ€™t already, please take a moment to label your studentโ€™s items!

Hiteon Elementary has a 30-day Lost and Found Policy. The L&F carts are cleaned out monthly and any unclaimed items that have been there 30+ days are donated to the Beaverton School District Clothes For Kids organization.

Technology In The Class Technology In The Class

Technology In The Classroom

As you know, there are ongoing conversations among various stakeholders regarding the amount of time students spend on devices. These discussions are taking place both locally and nationally. To support this work, we are currently forming a committee that will help the district develop recommendations for the responsible use of technology in schools. The committee will review research and best practices, assess current district practices, and provide input on screen time guidance and instructional technology expectations for grades K-5, with implementation planned for fall 2027.

In the meantime, we want to ensure that families have clear information about our Teaching and Learning guidance related to when technology and digital platforms are used in the classroom. To support these conversations, we have created grade-level documents that outline the content areas and digital platforms available to students, along with recommended usage frequency and time guidelines.

Universal Screening for TAG Universal Screening for TAG

All of our elementary schools are giving the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGATs) from Oct 5-Nov 10. Each building will decide what day and time in that window works best for their students.

These tests were developed specifically for identifying gifted students with little reliance on prior academic knowledge or English language skills. There are three Naglieri General Ability Tests: each one has 40 test items and has a time limit of 35 minutes.

  • The Nonverbal testโ€“that BSD gives to 3rd gradersโ€“uses shapes presented in a pattern, using sequences, spatial orientation and other distinguishing characteristics to arrive at the correct answer.

  • The Verbal testโ€“that BSD gives to 4th gradersโ€“requires students to recognize verbal concepts represented in pictures, and identify the trait or relationship that unites five of the six pictures in a test item.

  • The Quantitative testโ€“the BSD gives to 5th gradersโ€“uses numbers, symbols, numerical sequences, equivalency and patterns involving basic math to determine the correct answer. Students are given scratch paper and pencils when taking this test.

Students should be encouraged to take their time and look carefully at each question. Explain that questions will increase in difficulty through the test, and remind your child that for each of the test questions, there is one best answer.

The overall goal of an ability test is to test studentsโ€™ true intellectual ability, not their learned knowledge. Therefore, we discourage the use of prepared materials to practice test content. Familiarity with the test greatly increases the likelihood of test error, and despite good intentions by parents, is often disadvantageous to students.

The results from these tests is one piece of quantitative evidence in a TAG evaluation that requires quantitative and qualitative evidence. Decisions on TAG identification at schools will happen in late Winter 2027.

BSD School Calendar Survey Fall 2026 BSD School Calendar Survey Fall 2026

What are the most important priorities we should consider as we develop our school calendar for the next three years? We need your input so we can learn whatโ€™s most important to everyone and inform our next steps. We are using ThoughtExchange so everyone has a chance to share their perspectives and understand whatโ€™s most important to the group. The exchange starts with asking you to rank items related to the adoption of our school calendar in order of importance. Once you have ranked the existing items, you will be able to enter any thought you have related to the school calendar priorities for others to review and rank.

YEARBOOK! Weโ€™re starting to collect photos for the 5th grade yearbook, and we need your help!

Email Photos of your student during their years at Hiteon (2020โ€“2026) to gradparty@hiteonptc.org. Please limit photos to those taken at Hiteon or during Hiteon events.

Photo Upload Option: You may also upload photos directly to this shared Google Drive folder. (Files will be moved regularly into a secure folder, so donโ€™t worry if the Drive looks โ€œemptyโ€โ€”your uploads are safe).

Important!!! Name your files as โ€œchildโ€™s name_teacherโ€ so we know who is who.

Also important: Photos uploaded to the shared folder are for yearbook use only. They may not be copied, downloaded, or shared on social media.

Volunteer Check-In Requirements Volunteer Check-In Requirements

User uploaded image
open_in_new zoom_out_map

It has come to our attention that thereโ€™s a need for clarification regarding school volunteers and whether they are required to sign in through the Raptor kiosk. In short, the answer is YES.

While volunteers may use the Raptor Safe app to sign up for events in advance, this action does not constitute official check-in upon arrival. Signing up through the app simply indicates intent to participate, it does not sign them into the event. This distinction is critical for two key reasons:

  1. Mandatory Sex Offender Screening: The real-time background check is only triggered when a volunteer checks in at the on-site Raptor tablet kiosk. Without this step, the required screening doesnโ€™t occur.

  2. Emergency Accountability: If a volunteer is not signed in through the kiosk, the school has no record of their presence on campus. This poses a serious risk in the event of an emergency where accurate headcount and location tracking are essential.

Every volunteer must physically check in at the kiosk each time that they arrive on campus. This is the only way to ensure compliance with safety protocols and to maintain a secure environment for our students and staff.

If you haven't done your background check to volunteer at Hiteon, you can start on the Volunteer webpage on the district website. The entire process โ€” including the review of the Child Abuse Prevention & Reporting and Adult Sexual Misconduct training materials โ€” should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Thank you for prioritizing our studentsโ€™ safety and for your willingness to volunteer in BSD.
