Panther Families,

There is no school tomorrow, Thursday, or Friday. Our teachers will be engaging in professional learning and preparing for upcoming conferences.

I recently spent time in our Career Seminar course. Career Seminar is designed to support students as they prepare to enter the workforce. I was impressed by the level of engagement.

On the day of my visit, students were participating in mock interviews. They practiced answering seven common interview questions. The learning went beyond simply preparing answers. They practiced handshakes, making eye contact, and thinking about how to speak honestly about themselves while still communicating confidence in their strengths and abilities.

These are the kinds of relevant experiences that help students develop skills they will carry with them well beyond high school. Watching students take the experience seriously was a great reminder of the importance of giving our students opportunities to apply what they are learning in authentic situations.

Fall Conferences are coming up. We look forward to connecting with families and talking about how things are going and how we can continue to support each student’s success.

  • Wednesday, October 14: 8 -10 a.m. - Drop-in conferences / 10 – 11 a.m. - Scheduled conferences
  • Thursday, October 22: 4 – 7 p.m. – Drop-in conferences / 7 – 8 p.m. - Scheduled conferences

Please feel welcome to drop by the high school and connect with teachers during the drop-in times OR schedule time with teacher during their scheduled conference times.

We will see students back at school next Monday and Tuesday, followed by fall break Wednesday through Friday. There will not be a school newsletter next Wednesday. We look forward to seeing many of you at Fall Conferences and continuing to partner with you in supporting your student’s success.

Proud to be a Panther,

Megan Jahnke

Principal

Direct Admissions emails have arrived

We recently communicated about our participation in the Direct Admissions Minnesota program. Through this program, seniors can receive proactive admission to colleges and universities across the state - no extra applications, no fees, just opportunities. There are 55 Minnesota colleges and universities participating in Direct Admissions. They include a wide variety of options.

Direct admission emails hit student MyPanther email accounts. For more detailed information, refer to the Direct Admissions email that went to seniors and families.

SLPHS is hosting a "You received your Direct Admissions email, now what?" event on Monday, October 12 at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Center. Please encourage your student to check their email and attend this event.

And remember, your student's counselor is here to answer questions, provide guidance, and help plan next steps. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Powering Schools with the Sun

A year ago, Centerview Elementary and Westwood Intermediate and Middle School began generating electricity from the sun. State and federal grants covered 90 percent of the cost, and one year later, the results are solar-iously encouraging.

Centerview and Westwood are not the only district schools benefiting from solar energy. Read more about how we're Powering Schools with the Sun.

Winter Market and Thrift Shop

Community Education will be hosting the Winter Market for our students/families again on Saturday, December 5. This is an opportunity for students to shop for inexpensive items to give as gifts to loved ones for upcoming holidays and gift-giving events. There are two ways you can participate and help make this a great event:

  • Donate Panther gear for the Thrift Shop: Donate your gently used Panther gear with current SLP branding and get a coupon to use in the Panther Store for a future purchase. Gear will be re-sold at thrifty prices to students, staff, and families at the Winter Market. Plan to drop items at the DSC to get your coupon; email your questions to PantherStore@district16.org.
  • Donate gift items for the Winter Market Gift Shop: Donate gently used, almost new, or new items to the Winter Market. Bring items to the District Services Center to the attention of Community Education. Items appropriate for the Gift Shop include: small household items, household decor, puzzles, board games, jewelry, figurines, décor, kitchen gadgets, children’s books, cookbooks, etc. Think about items a child would be excited to pick out for an adult in their life, and what an adult might be happy to receive and use in their daily life. We are especially looking for items that could be gifted to men. Questions, please contact us at SLPComEd@district16.org.
