Imagine 2030 Theme: Retaining and Supporting Great Educators Imagine 2030 Theme: Retaining and Supporting Great Educators

Thank you to everyone who participated in our fall surveys. As we develop our Imagine 2030 strategic plan, our Board of Education and District Task Force have been carefully analyzing your feedback. I'm sharing a series of updates focusing on the key themes that emerged from your responses.

This week's focus: retaining and supporting our exceptional staff.

Across student, staff, and family responses, one message came through clearly—Haslett is fortunate to have deeply dedicated teachers and support staff who care about kids and consistently go above and beyond. This commitment is a major strength of our district, and it's one we need to actively protect.

At the same time, many participants noted how difficult it can be to maintain this level of dedication over time. High expectations, demanding workloads, and growing student needs all place strain on staff. That's why one of our most important challenges moving forward is not just recruitment—but retention.

As part of our Imagine 2030 strategic planning conversations, several key themes are emerging around how we might strengthen our culture of support and recognition for staff:

  • Expanding staff appreciation and recognition efforts
  • Ensuring professional learning is meaningful, collaborative, and tied to what staff need most
  • Promoting open communication and consistent feedback loops across all levels
  • Working to remain competitive as an employer while ensuring student needs are being fulfilled

This work is ongoing—and it's essential. As we continue our planning, supporting our people will remain at the center of our conversations. After all, the success of our students is directly connected to the stability, wellbeing, and strength of the adults who serve them every day.

More to come next week as we highlight another theme from your feedback. Thank you for being part of the process.

A Collaborative Experience for Teachers

This March, our school district had the exciting opportunity for over 70 teachers from all five school buildings to engage in valuable professional learning through district-wide Learning Walks. The event, held over three days—March 10th, 11th, and 13th—allowed educators to visit each other's classrooms, observe teaching practices, and collaborate on new strategies to enhance their own instruction.

Teachers were given the freedom to choose which grade levels, subject areas, and buildings they wanted to visit, creating an environment of choice and personal professional growth. The instructional coaches at each building played a vital role in coordinating the schedules and ensuring smooth transitions between the various schools, allowing teachers to make the most of this immersive learning experience.

On these three days, staff at Ralya and Murphy traveled to the other four schools in the district, providing opportunities for elementary teachers to observe their peers at the early childhood, middle school, and high school levels. Similarly, middle school and high school teachers ventured to visit other secondary classrooms, broadening their understanding of educational practices across grade levels. Teachers at Wilkshire also took part, visiting Ralya and Murphy to observe the full spectrum of subjects taught in these schools.

Throughout the Learning Walks, educators had the opportunity to observe lessons in a wide variety of subjects, including reading, writing, math, science, social studies, physical education, art, and music. Some teachers also opted to remain in their own buildings to observe colleagues in different grade levels, providing an opportunity for vertical collaboration within the same school. This variety of observation opportunities allowed teachers to not only learn from one another, but also gain insights into the teaching methods and classroom environments of different age groups and subject areas.

This week was filled with moments of learning, collaboration, and fun, as teachers came together to share ideas, reflect on their practices, and discover new approaches to teaching and learning. The Learning Walks not only strengthened the bonds within our school community but also reinforced the importance of continuous professional growth and the power of collaborative learning. We look forward to continuing this enriching tradition and seeing the positive impact it has on our students’ success.
