Hello Larries Community,

Over the past several months, the Bird’s Eye View has given you a window into the life of SLC—where students are learning, creating, and growing together. We continue to be very proud of what’s happening in our classrooms, fields, and stages, and we are grateful to share it with the community that supports us so well. Thank you for continuing to be part of our story!

Despite still not having a NYS Budget passed (it was due on April 1st), the BFCSD 2026-2027 budget has been created and accepted by the Board of Education, for your vote on May 19th. Together, we have spent several months looking at where we can make the biggest differences for the future of our children and teaching staff. Last month, I listed 7 additions we are hoping and would like to make here at SLC for next year. Of those 7 items I shared, 6 of the 7 have some portion that center around “earlier intervention” for our youngest students. Research, and really “common sense”, tells us that the sooner we can positively intervene in our young children’s lives, the more likely they are to be successful as they move throughout middle school, high school, and life after graduation. This budget looks at continuing to grow our middle and high school programs, while really putting a more intense focus on our youngest “Little Larries”.

Our ever changing world also continues to bring many new non-academic challenges. These non-academic community concerns center around mental health, child care, after-school care, food insecurity, and recreation. I promise that SLC is doing everything we can to also meet those needs listed and more. We would really appreciate your support at the May 19th vote which will be located in our Middle School gym.

With great pride, we announce Sophia Guerard as the Valedictorian for the Class of 2026. Sophia, the daughter of Sarena and Marc Guerard, has distinguished herself through exceptional academic achievement, meaningful service, and remarkable leadership across all areas of her high school experience.

Sophia has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while fully immersing herself in a wide range of activities that reflect both her talents and her character. She has been an active member of varsity soccer, competitive dance, Boy Scouts, National Honor Society, Tri M Music Honor Society, drama club, speech and debate, Spanish club, student council, swing choir, book club, and Order of the Arrow. Her dedication to these organizations is matched by her extensive leadership, serving as captain of the dance team, Senior Patrol Leader of her Boy Scout troop, president of the National Honor Society, president of speech and debate, vice president of Tri M, drama club, and Spanish club, secretary of student council, treasurer of chorus, and troop representative for the Order of the Arrow.

Service has been a cornerstone of Sophia’s high school journey. As an Eagle Scout with two additional palms, she went above and beyond in her commitment to her community. For her Eagle Scout project, she designed and built hygiene wellness centers, modeled after Little Free Libraries, to provide free and accessible hygiene products to those in need. She further demonstrated her compassion through her Girl Scout Silver Award project, creating and donating handmade blankets to residents of local nursing homes. Her efforts reflect a genuine desire to make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of others.

In recognition of her achievements, Sophia has received numerous honors, including Academic All Northern recognition, as well as several prestigious scholarships such as the Augsbury Scholarship, the Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship, and the Lalonde Family Scholarship.

Looking toward the future, Sophia plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology, where she will pursue computer engineering through an accelerated combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program. With her strong work ethic and passion for innovation, she aspires to build a successful career in the field of computer engineering.

Sophia’s journey has been defined not only by success, but by growth, resilience, and a willingness to challenge herself. She offers this advice to future students: "Don’t be afraid to fail when trying. You often learn and grow more from failure than from success."

Congratulations, Sophia, on this well deserved honor. Your dedication, leadership, and service have left a lasting impact on your school community, and we look forward to all you will accomplish in the years ahead.

It is with great pride that we announce Aubrey Plumadore as the Salutatorian for the Class of 2026. Aubrey, the daughter of Kayla and Matthew Russell, has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence and personal growth throughout her high school career.

Aubrey has maintained a position among the top five students in her class for all four years, a reflection of her dedication, perseverance, and strong work ethic. She has also earned recognition on the President’s List each year of high school, further highlighting her commitment to achieving academic success and striving for excellence in all of her studies.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Aubrey has been an active participant in the school’s music program as a member of the jazz band, where she plays the trumpet. Her involvement in music showcases not only her talent, but also her ability to balance academics with extracurricular activities, contributing positively to the school community.

Looking ahead, Aubrey plans to attend SUNY Potsdam, where she will major in Childhood Education. She is passionate about pursuing a career as an elementary school teacher and is driven by her desire to give back to her community and make a meaningful impact on the lives of young students. Aubrey is committed to helping children learn, grow, and succeed in their educational journeys.

Her advice to future students is both practical and motivating: “Don’t put off goals you want to achieve. Work your hardest toward them and you will accomplish them, no matter how hard they might be.”

Aubrey’s determination, dedication, and passion for helping others will undoubtedly guide her toward a bright and successful future.

Congratulations, Aubrey, on this well-deserved honor. Your hard work and commitment serve as an inspiration to your peers, and we look forward to seeing all that you will accomplish in the years to come.

Students will have artwork on display at the North Country Art Teachers Association (NCATA) 12th Annual Regional Art Show at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES in Canton, NY. This art show showcases the best of each district with only 16 pieces of artwork from Kindergarten-8th grade being selected. We are able to showcase one senior as well. Therefore, it is an honor for these students to be chosen.

On April 28th there was an opening reception for all students, family, and community members to attend. There was henna and face painting, live music by Stella Todd, and lots of amazing artwork to view!

Please congratulate the following Elementary School students for having their work in the show: Scarlett Dishaw, Kacey Lincoln, Lexee McDonald, Ameilia Nightengale, Ciara Peacock, Augusta Rourke, Mason Serge, and Kody VanSleet.

Please congratulate the following Middle School students for having their work in the show: Madilyn Austin, Peyton Beach, Blue Burnett, Emma Bush, Katherine DeForge, Jensen Dishaw, Isabella Wagstaff, and Autumn Wolfe.

Congratulations our senior Mikayla Tobin!

The art show will be on display through May 19th, and open to the public to view during building hours: 8am-4pm. We hope you have a chance to see the show!

Mrs. Warner, Mr. Brown, and Ms. VanBrocklin

Several of our students were recently recognized as Northern Zone Physical Education and Health Student Award recipients, an honor that highlights their outstanding commitment to fitness, wellness, leadership, and positive character. These students consistently demonstrate dedication in class, a willingness to support their peers, and a strong understanding of the importance of healthy, active lifestyles. We are proud of their achievements and commend them for representing our school so well!

The following students were selected by their physical education teachers—Ms. Chamberlin, Mr. St. Hilaire, Mrs. Adams, and Mr. Dow. High school recipients included Mary-Cate Dow, Dylan Bressett, and Kollin Cartin. Middle school recipients included Bailey Aldridge, Roman Flannery, and Grady Clark. The elementary recipients were Carson Tuper, Rian Aldous, and Ethan LaShomb.

HS Reminders and Review

It is hard to believe there are just under 10 weeks of school remaining in the 2025-26 school year. As we look forward to the end of the year, I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of a few important details to keep in mind for the remainder of the year.

With 30 week report cards being mailed, it is important to remember all HS students must pass their coursework in order to earn course credit. HS students need an overall passing average of a 65 to earn course credit. Some courses will end in a Regents Exam that will also require them to sit for these exams. Students who are not successful in these courses will be required to repeat these courses and/or exams. We are currently finalizing details of summer school and will make that information available as soon as possible. The majority of summer school will be in-person this summer, so please take this into consideration when planning any activities during the summer for your child as attendance will be mandatory for those repeating coursework and exams.

All students scheduled for a Regents course should be prepared to take the exam in June. The calendar is included below for your reference. Please note, all exams at SLC HS will begin at 8:15 AM for morning exams and 12:15 PM for afternoon exams in place of the standard times indicated on the New York State schedule. Please email your child’s teacher directly, a school counselor, or myself if you have specific questions pertaining to your child.

June 2026 Regents Exam Schedule

On Saturday, May 9th SLC Juniors will host the Junior and Senior Prom. Tickets are currently on sale during lunches and in the morning. Please note: Students attending will need to complete and sign with parent signatures a “Prom Expectations form.” It is important that both parents and students are aware of the information pertaining to prom.
On Tuesday, May 12th at 6:00 PM, our HS Chorus and Band groups will gather for their annual spring concert. On Thursday, May 14th at 7:15 PM our ensemble groups will perform. We invite you to see how hard our students have worked on their musical pieces!
We will celebrate student awards and scholarships for selected students and their invited guests on Tuesday, May 19th at 6:00 PM. Please be on the lookout for your child’s invitation to be recognized. This is one of our favorite times of the school year to recognize our students’ hard work and dedication to their academics. Please note: The school budget vote is that night and we encourage all to take a little extra time to head to the middle school gym to cast your vote!
Final Exams will take place on June 15th and 16th. As these exams can contribute significantly to your child’s overall average in a course, it is imperative that they come prepared to do their best. Many teachers offer review sessions for both finals and Regents exams. You are encouraged to reach out to the teacher of the course directly to see what options exist for preparing for these exams. As was the case during midterms, students must be in attendance on the date of their final exam and retakes will not be offered. Your child’s teacher will communicate with them on the date their exam will be.

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy spring!

Mrs. Kristen Zender

High School Principal

Greetings from the High School Guidance Office!

As we near the end of the academic year, we are reaching out to provide some important updates to ensure a successful conclusion for our students.

Numerous scholarships are available for graduating seniors. Students should check with the guidance office and ensure they meet all submission deadlines. As the transition to college approaches, the coming month will be bustling with preparations. Upon confirming their enrollment, students should diligently monitor their email for details such as housing deadlines, immunization records, financial aid procedures, and orientation schedules.

We understand that fatigue may set in during this final stretch, but it is vital to persevere. We are almost there! Consistency is key to finishing the year strong. Encourage your child to stick to their routine, stay on top of assignments, and utilize activity periods to seek teacher assistance if needed. Should they feel overwhelmed, our counseling office is here to help manage end-of-year stress.

Parents should have received information regarding summer school via email alongside the 35-week progress report. Students interested in enrolling in career and technical education programs at Seaway Tech must ensure they meet graduation requirements to qualify for the program next year. If you have any inquiries, please don't hesitate to contact your child's school counselor.

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate the conclusion of this school year together.

Warm Regards,

Miss Bethel & Ms. Ruddy

Studio in Art students have recently completed several creative projects showcasing their skills and individuality. Students created colored pencil ribbon word drawings based on the work of an artist by the name of Ed Ruscha. They had to choose descriptive words that they felt suited their personality and build this word out of paper and then use it as the subject for their drawing. Students have also been working on building animal or human figures using wire as a sculptural medium. In Ceramics class, students are crafting “tromploeil” clay sculptures —artworks designed to “fool the eye” into appearing as real objects. Meanwhile, Drawing and Painting students have finished self-portraits using a variety of drawing mediums.

Earlier this winter, Sofie McDermott showcased her culinary talents in the New York State Burger Battle competition, earning an impressive 1st place finish! To celebrate her achievement, our food service department featured Sofie's award-winning burger as the school lunch special on Thursday, April 23rd. Students and staff in the Middle and High Schools were thrilled to enjoy her delicious creation, making it a memorable and tasty way to honor her success!

During the month of March, Ms. LaVoie's students competed in March Mammal Madness presented by Arizona State University. The month began with research into adaptations, behaviors, etc. which students used as a guide while filling out a bracket based on which organism students thought could win in a fictional fight.

Cassie Bedard was the 2026 March Mammal Madness Champion accumulating 127 out of a possible 138 points. Max Brouse came in second place with an honorable 121 points. Evyn Sutton claimed third place with 120 points, total.

Congratulations to the Varsity Baseball and Softball teams on being named Scholar Athlete Teams for the Spring Season!

Fall Sports sign-ups are going on right now. If anyone missed them, contact Mr. Reome or your PE teacher to sign up. Varsity Football numbers will be a concern right now.

Fall Sports physicals will be Tuesday, May 19th. Anyone needing one will be notified after sign-ups. We highly recommend taking the school offering as Fall is always the worst season for kids starting the year with no physical causing a delay in them starting practice and missing a game or two.

A reminder that the Lalonde Family Initiative Scholarship ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 17th at 1:00 PM at Pike's Place.

Spring sports playoffs will begin when we return from from Memorial day break.

You can find all schedules at https://www.arbiterlive.com/Teams?entityId=20061 or on our district website and app.

Happy Spring SLC!

It is so nice to see our students once again enjoying our new playground and the sunshine. May and June will definitely fly by. Please keep an eye out for information from teachers and the school for end of the year events and reminders. We have concerts coming up. Our middle school award ceremony invitations will also be going out soon.

The students have been working hard on their state tests. Following state tests we will finish up our instruction for the year and begin preparation for finals. Our grade 8 students will also be all presenting their Portfolios. Grade 8 parents and families, we hope you will join us for these important presentations. The students have been working hard on them all year, and this will help demonstrate their readiness for high school.

We also have a new middle school friend joining us soon. Benny LaBarge will be coming to work as a therapy dog in our school. Benny is a miniature poodle who just turned two years old in April. He loves people and other animals. He will be stationed in the middle school office.

Spring Reminders for Students:

Bike helmets must be used on school property, and no bikes on grass or fields.
Dress in layers as we might go from freezing to hot temperatures within the same day.
No caffeinated beverages in school.
Be in school every day with a positive attitude, charged chromebook, homework done and ready to learn.
LIVE LIKE A LARRIE

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Middle School Principal

Hello Middle School Families and Friends,

Our 6th grade annual meetings are almost complete. If you have any questions or would like to follow up, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s school counselor—we’re always happy to connect and support your family.

We’re also looking forward to checking in with our 5th grade students. These conversations give students a chance to reflect on their school year—what went well, what they enjoyed, and what they’d like to improve moving forward. It’s a great way to help them feel heard and supported as they continue to grow.

In the coming weeks, our team will be visiting classrooms to wrap up lessons focused on respect, understanding differences, and building a positive school community.

We know this time of year can feel busy, especially with State Testing underway. Encouraging your child to get plenty of rest, eat well, and try their best can go a long way in helping them feel confident and prepared.

There are many exciting events ahead, including the science fair, award ceremonies, and field trips—we’re looking forward to celebrating our students and all of their hard work! As we move toward the end of the school year, we’ll also begin reaching out to families regarding summer school.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We’re proud of all our students and look forward to finishing the year strong together!

The Middle School Counseling Team,

Mr. Niles nniles@bfcsd.org (Students A-K)

Mr. Clookey dclookey@bfcsd.org (Students L-Z)

Mrs. Phelix and Mrs. Darling's Reading Olympics Challenge in 8th Grade ELA has officially come to an end with our final challenges and closing ceremony. Congrats to the teams who took GOLD in each of their ELA classes: Team Fiji (Ava Peryer, Autumn Wolfe and Sofia Phillips); Team Zimbabwe (Owen Aslanian and Evan McBride); Team Poland (Anna Lawrence and Cheyenne Frank); Team USA (Adalyn Bedard, Tailynn Richards, Peyton Cox, and Arianna Shattuck), and Team Germany (Katherine DeForge, Jack LaBier, and Alyiss Wells)!

This past week, our 6th grade scientists learned about weather forecasting tools and even began building some of their own. Students crafted and tested the weather vanes they built to determine the wind's direction, which can help predict the type of weather we’re expecting!

But the learning doesn’t stop there! Next, students will be building anemometers to measure wind speed and barometers to measure air pressure. By the end of this unit they’ll have created their own miniature weather station to use at home. A very special “Thank You!” to all of the parents and teachers who made these activities possible with donations of tin cans, straws, cups, and balloons; this wouldn’t have been possible without your help!

The Extended Day Program would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Len Mackey for visiting our school and sharing his knowledge of African drumming and culture. His energy and positive spirit were truly contagious—long after he left, we were all still feeling inspired and uplifted! Students had an amazing time dancing, learning, and playing the drums. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved!

SLC Families,

A highlight of the last month has been hosting our first through fourth grade concerts. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Hahn and our teachers for their efforts in preparing our students for this. The students did a great job on their performance!

Be on the lookout for information on our annual Larries Day, as we may be looking for volunteers to help. Information on this should go out within the next month.

The Pre-K Program for the 2026-2027 year is filling up quickly. We appreciate families registering their child sooner than later, so thank you to those who have already done so. As a reminder, in order to be included in the lottery for placement on June 1, your child must have all necessary paperwork submitted.

Kindergarten registration has opened as well. Please do not wait to register your child, as much of our planning for kindergarten hinges on numbers. In order to best prepare for your child's kindergarten experience, we request that you register them sooner than later. Please call the district office at 315-389-5131 for more information.

Dates to Know:

May 26 may be a give-back snow day, *AS LONG AS WE DO NOT USE ANOTHER SNOW DAY BEFORE THEN. This would mean we would have no school on this day. There is also no school on May 25, in honor of Memorial Day.
Grade 4 swim races will take place at 9:30 on Wednesday, June 3.
Larries Day is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, with a rain date of Monday, June 22.
There is no school on Juneteenth (Friday, June 19).
Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25 will be 12:30 dismissal days for students.
June 25 will also be the last day of school.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Colterman

Dear Families and Caregivers,

As we move into the final months of the school year, we are proud of all the growth our students have shown academically, socially, and emotionally. Spring is a wonderful time to reflect, celebrate progress, and continue building important life skills at home and at school.

In May, students are learning about perseverance. Perseverance is the skill of continuing to try even when something feels hard. The whole school is reading Salt in His Shoes by Deloris Jordan and Roslyn M. Jordan. In the story, young Michael Jordan learns that success takes patience, practice, and determination. Students are learning that mistakes help our brains grow and that hard work matters more than being perfect right away.

How can you encourage perseverance at home?

Try Something New Together: Ride bikes, learn a card game, bake, or practice a sport. Talk about how learning takes practice.
Use Growth Mindset Phrases:

“I can’t do this…yet.”
“Mistakes help me learn.”
“I will keep trying.”

Goal Jar: Help your child set one small weekly goal and celebrate their effort, not just the outcome.
Puzzle or Building Challenges: Work on LEGOs, puzzles, or drawing projects that take patience and problem-solving.

Now that it seems that spring is finally here, we love hearing about our students enjoying time outside. Warmer weather gives children healthy ways to move their bodies, calm their minds, and manage big feelings.

Take a “breathing walk” and notice 5 things you can see.
Blow bubbles and practice slow deep breaths.
Draw with sidewalk chalk.
Read outside together.
Go on a nature scavenger hunt.
Listen for bird sounds or look for signs of spring.
Practice yoga or stretching outside.
Play catch, jump rope, or ride bikes to release extra energy.
Create a calm-down spot outside with blankets or lawn chairs.

Thank you for continuing to support your child’s social-emotional growth at home and at school. Working together helps children build confidence, kindness, resilience, and strong problem-solving skills.

Wishing your family a wonderful spring season!

Mrs. McFarland and Ms. LaBarge

The Larries Spotlight Award was created to recognize Elementary Staff who demonstrate a specific trait each quarter. This award is voted upon by peers who want to give a shout out to one of their colleagues for doing an outstanding job.

Brooke Woods was The Larries Spotlight Award winner for the Third Quarter! This quarter’s trait was Cooperation and Mrs. Woods received the award from her peers based on her ability to always have a positive attitude and build relationships with students and staff. She works as a team with staff and is always looking out for the best interest of each and every child. She isn’t afraid to lend a helping hand to anyone, even in difficult situations.

Thank you, Mrs. Woods, for always being a team player and making SLC a better place!

Want to know more about how we support writing in our school?

The Writing Revolution is an approach we use across all grade levels to help students become stronger writers. It teaches writing step by step, starting with simple sentences and building up to clear, organized paragraphs and longer pieces. Students learn how to put their ideas into words in a way that makes sense and is easy to understand.

This approach is used in all subjects—not just during writing time—so students practice writing in reading, science, social studies, and more. By writing about what they are learning, students deepen their understanding and build confidence in expressing their thinking.

Each day, students practice specific writing skills such as forming complete sentences, using proper grammar and punctuation, and organizing their ideas. Over time, these skills grow into stronger, more detailed writing.

How you can support your student at home:

Encourage your child to speak in complete sentences when sharing ideas.
Ask your child to explain their thinking and add details to their answers.
Practice simple writing tasks like making lists, writing notes, or journaling.
Help your child check their writing for capitals, punctuation, and complete thoughts.
Remind your child that writing takes practice, and it’s okay to make mistakes while learning.

Parent and Family Engagement within the FBA and BIP Process

Protecting Our Students: Stay Alert to Cyber Threats

As we head into the final weeks of the school year, cybercriminals continue to target students and families through increasingly sophisticated schemes. This May, experts are seeing a rise in phishing attacks disguised as legitimate school communications, social media scams targeting teens, and credential theft through fake login pages. Parents and students should be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages claiming to be from schools — always verify by contacting the school directly through official phone numbers or websites. Additionally, remind your child that oversharing on social media can provide criminals with personal information used for identity theft or blackmail.

What Families Can Do: Enable multi-factor authentication on all online accounts, including email and school portals. Encourage open conversations with your child about online safety, and establish ground rules about what personal information should never be shared online — including full names, addresses, phone numbers, and school schedules. Keep all devices updated with the latest security patches and antivirus software. If your student receives a suspicious email, forward it to our IT department immediately rather than clicking any links or downloading attachments.

Our School's Commitment: SLC takes cybersecurity seriously and continuously updates our systems to protect student data. Our IT team monitors for threats, and we provide regular digital citizenship training. We encourage families to reach out with questions or concerns about online safety — your vigilance is our first line of defense.

If you have any questions, you can contact Mr. Welsh via email at kwelsh@bfcdsd.org, or call the technology department at (315) 389-5131 ext. 29250.
