What brought you to Minnesota? ~ By the Hubbs Center ELL C Class

The Hubbs Center ELL C Class has been working hard to do well in their class, and in doing so many students wrote about what brought them to Minnesota! We will be sharing their stories through the newsletter. Great job students!!

Yenework Woldeyohannes

I came from Ethiopia with my family, for a better life and a good education. My husband got a green card and we came here with my oldest daughter who was 3 years old in 2006 in the fall and I had never seen all the leaves come off the trees and fall down! I like green and I like leaves and the leaves were red - oh my goodness, I thought, the tree is red! I was curious to know everything. I said what is this country! They said, it has life, it comes back after winter. I said what is winter? Back home I watched a movie and saw snow, but I didn’t guess we would see so much snow in Minnesota. Then later I saw it was very windy and I didn’t know about tornadoes; I was so scared. At first, I wore too many clothes in the winter and it made me sweat.

Asian & Pacific American Heritage and Older Americans Month!!

May marks Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans hailing from across the Asian continent and from the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Cynthia Choi, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action and co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate says the month is a time to speak out, share stories and debunk myths about Asian communities, she said. But it's not the only time to celebrate Asian culture or diversity.

May 7, 1843, marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. And May 10, 1869, or Golden Spike Day, recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which had significant contributions from Chinese workers.

Mental Health Awareness Month!!

Mental health awareness is something that can help the millions of people who are impacted by mental health issues throughout the United States. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults have had or currently have symptoms of a mental illness. These statistics show just how prevalent living with a mental illness actually is.

This is also why NAMI recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The goal with a whole month of mental health awareness is to help people with mental illnesses understand that they are not alone in their struggles—and that getting treatment can make all the difference. If we applied this approach to mental health every day of the year, more and more people could benefit from knowing about these common illnesses.
